A new Author
Hi Guys I finally got a chance to finish up my article on how I built my little Baldwin switcher. The S Resources magazine scooped up the article for $100 and should be published in the S Resources June /July issue according to the editor. http://sscaleresource.com/ I hope you enjoy the article. Bucking a trend 2
Well, the change from Yahoo Groups to groups,io is the "talk of the town" on many Yahoo groups currently, pushing "real" messages aside big time. I now am a member of three groups with both the Yahoo and groups.io versions. I still have four Yahoo groups who have no groups.io connection, but I'm afraid they are "bucking a trend." Though those of us who go to the actual Group seem to have been having less trouble than those who take individual e-mails, but Yahoo troubles are reaching the point that we are being forced to leave. The new owners are committing Internet suicide. Word is that Oath, a subsidiary of Verizon, runs Yahoo now. A LOT of folks we know, including Cindy and I, have gone rounds with Verizon over ridiculous costs and service. (Likewise "Crumcast" cable TV and Internet dis-service.) Like any other industry giant, if you can bury your competition by buying and killing it, that's perfectly acceptable and gives you a tighter grip on the market. Hmmm... Oh well, I'm just being a "Certified Grumpy Old Man" about this. "Seen this show before" too many times I guess. I need to move on and learn groups.io like I used to know Yahoo Groups. Since I get tons of e-mail, I did what I had with Yahoo and chose to come here to read posts instead of e-mail. But at this point, I still seem to go to Yahoo groups first and come to groups.io next to see what's going on. Like I said before, I have a severe case of "Old Dog" syndrome. :-) Stumpy Stone in Ohio

The Move 5
Much as I hate to see the long run of S Trains on Yahoo Groups end and having my to learn to use a new system, I guess it is inevitable. Other of my Groups are in the process of doing the same thing, or are talking about it. It's getting harder for this old dog to learn new tricks I suppose. Stumpy Stone in Ohio

So it was super easy to create an account and get logged in. Now I have to wonder if it was that easy how much spam there is going to be. Anyone have any experience with this from another groups.io site? "Banker" Bill

Transfer from YahooGroups; Was: Hi Mel
All, I suspect that the list tried to transfer without enough planning and research into the list requirements. AKA they didn't know the size of the Photo storage used on YG. Part of the problem is that YG does not always list the actual size of the total photos files. When I transfered S-Scale YG only listed 10% of the files actually stored, which was over 6 GB. If I hadn't limited photo size stored, the transfer of S-Scale would also have failed; as it was we snuck under the limit and have gained more space by eliminating some old directories of images not related to S-Scale. Since I am a member but not owner/moderator of the S-Trains list on groups.io; I do not have access to the admin menu and the settings used to limit photo image size. However the default photo settings for new lists do not have size limits, so if unchanged, would be responsible for the transfer failing to complete under the 1GB storage limit for free lists. The image size limits set for S-Scale were 1024x1024 pixels for stored photos (in Files, Photos & Databases) and 488x488 pixels for images embedded in messages. Since S-trains appears to have much less than half the volume of photo storage that S-Scale used under YG, using the same maximum image sizes would reduce the photo storage required to under the Free list 1 GB limit. The S-Scale list is quite vocal (chatty) yet after close to 1000 messages posted after the transfer, I don't recall a complaint about image size. There have been posts about being able to see and display and post photos again. Right now is an excellent time to transfer a list, as the three week backlog is gone and transfer can be completed in a few days. That's how long it took for my last list transfer a week ago. The only other issue for a list this large is whether to run two lists, YG and groups.io, at the same time. It may be workable for small lists, under 100 members, to try and maintain duplicate messages and files, but not for lists like S-Trains. The last list I transferred had only 80 members and the owners shut down the YG list, moderating all posts within a day. I transferred my first list of 1800 members back in January and moderated the old YG list, no posts allowed, the next day. Since then a member has been leaving the YG list every other day. Most members had subscribed for No E-mail and as a result haven't felt an urgency to quit since they are still receiving no e-mails. None of the 19 lists that I own/moderate/subscribe on groups.io have tried to maintain an identical active on YG after transfer. I remain willing to assist railroad oriented lists considering a transfer to groups.io Remember an announcement on the future look of Oath lists (formerly YahooGroups) is expected next month (May 2018). Something to think about. ken clark www.shastasprings.com

Hi Mel 9
Hello all, I am 72 yrs old and I am ready to go on this new site. The yahoo site is doing almost nothing now so lets go on this one. I love playing with my trains and look forward to discussions here on what we are doing. I at this time am continuing to add to the scenery on my layout. I'm trying different ways of making trees and doing things to make the backdrop, which runs down the center of my layout blend in to the scenery. What are others doing on their layouts. Ray -- rayinS

Black Axles
Recently picked up a very nice American Flyer 5323T set with all original boxes, etc. When I was looking over the 642 Seaboard boxcar, I was surprised to see that the axles had a beautiful black oxide coating on them.and not the normal plain steel finish. Has anyone else ever run across this before? Daryl

Repairing American Flyer 759 Danger Bell 2
The original bells in these things tend to crack over the years and no longer make a satisfying ding sound. There have been all sorts of suggestions to replace them over the years including 3/4 inch copper pipe caps but those just make a kind of thud and no clear ring. I recently found a source of usable bells on Amazon of all places! They are sold as a bird toy and come with 3 bells and some beads on a chain. Price is reasonable, under 9 dollars and free shipping if you have Amazon Prime. http://tinyurl.com/ycu4ohln You just remove the bells from the chain and flatten the rear end slightly by placing them over a 5/16ths or so deep socket on a hard surface and gently tap a flat about 3/8ths in diameter on the round end. Ream out the hole to accommodate either a 4-40 screw and nut or a rivet if you prefer. They are the same diameter as the original bell but slightly longer. They still fit in the little house and make a very pleasant ding when activated. George Cohn

MTH DCS System 3
I'll probably have to ask this again as more former members come on board. But does anyone have or know someone using the MTH DCS system within a 100 miles of Johnson City, Tn? I need to program some DCC (DCS)sound effects on my F-3 and MTH does not support them being programmed on anyone else's DCC systems. I'm trying to avoid buying the MTH DCS system just to program a few sound effects on one locomotive. Thanks, George Courtney off-line at gsc3 at Yahoo.com.

Track question 5
I'm planning another display layout to take to shows and due to downsizing my vehicles it must be smaller. I would like to use the remaining S Helper flex track I have on hand and add some new track. Beside that I don't have any rail joiners or terminal joiners. I know that S helper was bought by MTH a few years back and they intended to continue to make the track and some of the trains. But I have heard that it is not quite the same product, that MTH has made some changes. So the question is this: Is MTH and S Helper track the same? Is MTH and S Helper track and accessory items interchangeable? Stumpy Stone in Ohio

Excessive photo sizes Was:Adding headlights 3
These 4 MB photos of OOF images are rapidly going to make this a Premium list by wasting photo storage. It's very simple for the list owners to limit the size of images embedded in messages to something like 488x488 pixels. Right now it appears to be unlimited. Also every time someone replies to a mega image post, the reply can be double in size, unless the images are manually removed before the reply is posted. It's far easier to limit the image size in messages than to get all list members to crop and reduce the size of their images. ken clark WWW.SHASTASPRINGS.COM Links: ------ [1] /g/S-Trains/message/47 [2] /mt/17096842/357285 [3] /g/S-Trains/post [4] /g/S-Trains/editsub/357285 [5] /g/S-Trains [6] /static/tos [7] /g/S-Trains/leave/defanged

ALCO Oil Wicks 6
Just curious. Did Gilbert quit using oil wicks in the later model ALCO Diesels? I know they are easily lost, but I've run into some diesels that appear never to have been serviced that are missing the wicks. Just wondering in others have run into this... Daryl

Electric Railroad closing its doors
For any of you TMCC lovers, Lionel has announced that they are closing ERR, their wholly owned retail supplier of TMCC control and sound boards. I have read that it is effective May 15th, but I haven't called Ken yet to check. Terrible news for those of us who love the ease of operating TMCC and have customized so many of our precious stable with these great electronics.

Macy's Toy Department - 4th floor 4
This is my previously rejected message, but since I had luck with my last message, I thought I would try this sending it to both the Yahoo and the groups.io "S-trains" -------- Forwarded Message -------- Subject: Macy's Toy Department - 4th floor Date: Thu, 19 Apr 2018 12:13:42 -0700 From: Dale Smith <dalefsmith@...> To: S-Trains@... When I updated the americanflyerdisplays.org website with new photos from the Ray Mohrlang Collection, I put up a photo of a Macy's window display. I had assumed that it was the Macy's in New York City, but I have recently learned that the toy department in that city was on the sixth floor, not the fourth floor as mentioned in a sign in that window display. So, here is the question. Does anyone remember a fourth floor toy department in their local Macy's store? We may not be able to pin the location of this layout down, unless someone remembers it, but that will at least give us a list of possible locations. The photo can be seen at this link. http://americanflyerdisplays.org/department_store/macys.htm I already know that the toy department in San Francisco Macy's was on the fourth floor, but I don't remember this layout. Maybe because I was only about 3 years old in 1948 when this layout most likely existed. Also I don't remember Macy's in SF handling Flyer. Penney's was the place for that. Thanks for any help you can give. Dale Smith

AF Displays - Macy's Toy Department - 4th floor 2
The link to the department store layouts - Eureka Stores in Windber, PA has a photo of what appears to be a 5008 set with the Santa Fe 360, 361, and three aluminum streamlined passenger cars, all with unusual black trucks. What is also strange is that the 360 A unit has the warbonnet paint scheme but the 361 B unit does not and is the simple solid sliver or chrome with no red painted stripes. The A unit in the Eureka photo may have the wire hand rails that came with some engines, but the B unit does not appear to have them. However, Doyle's book on AF does not mention a wire hand-rail version with warbonnet paint, only without. Usually the 362 combination of 360 and 361 came either with both units with the warbonnet paint, or neither, but not with one of each. Is this a new variation or was Eureka mixing and matching? It's strange that with the black trucks they'd have enough to mix and match if that's the case. Chris Harding
