Re: Packet tone pair for Kantronics KAM XL
Hello Randy,
As far as I know certain KAM's and AEA PK232's along with a few others have been using the 2200cf for 300b packet for decades. I'm not sure this really helps much but I still have and use a pk232 I bought new back in the late 80's. After finding that there were too many internal TNC components to change in order to move the tones for a 1700cf I ended up simply setting the rigs dial freq to .eg. 14105 and then setting both rcv and xmt RIT to + or - .5 depending on the rig being in LSB or USB. The downside of the 2200cf at least for me regardless of whether adjusting via dial or RIT is the inability of some of the older rigs I still use to keep the bw filters as narrow as I would like after offsetting for the 2200cf... offsetting that far on some older rigs forces the bw to be much wider than needed for 300b ax25. This wasn't nearly as much of a problem years back as it is now with all of the various digital sigs all squeezed into some of the rather narrow ACDS segments we have today. 73 de Rich WA3WLH |
Packet tone pair for Kantronics KAM XL
I have a new KAM XL running with an Icom IC-7410. Apparently, the default tone pair for HF packet is 2100/2300 Hz, CF 2200 Hz.
I have flashed the latest Firmware BIOS and all looks to be OK running in terminal mode.
Using the "Data LSB" mode in the 7410, my dial frequency turns out to be 14.105.5, instead of 14.105.0.
I don't mind working around it this way. Just for the sake of consistency, I would like to somehow change the tone pair to 1600/1800 Hz.
According to the manual, it looks like the MARK and SPACE commands are just for the RTTY mode.
Likewise, using the "LOWTONES ON" command seems to have no effect either.
The manual states that this command is used for "European" tones in RTTY, I assume.
Am I missing something? Ideally, I would like to have the 1600/1800 Hz tone pair for Packet and even Pactor.
But I would like to retain the 2125/2295 Hz tone pair for RTTY without having to change tones when switching between the modes.
Am I able to do this? I can use the direct FSK keying from the KAM XL and have the 7410 generate the proper shift in the RTTY mode.
But the issue remain with the decoding the corresponding tone pair on receive. I hope that I am making sense with this request.

Re: First tries on HF PAcket
During the day, i managed to copy several stations in 20 meters and even connect to some of them. I discovered that the packet mode on the FT-5000 is too much narrow and even 50HZ of deviation can block the reception. I switched to LSB and all worked fine. i hope to ear some traffic from the US, but i cannot leave the FT-5000 switched on for days. I will prepare a cable for the FT-857 and plan to use it for aprs in vhf and packet in HF. |

Re: First tries on HF PAcket
Andrea, On the KAM+ you can set the CD to software for use with open squelch.
the default will be hardware, but first try pressing the AM/FM button in and see if the?
CD light will go out, or at least flicker off, adjust audio level so the CD is off with no packet noise,
and on with packet noise. That¡¯s how I have mine set.?
if unsatisfactory operation, than return button to out position and set CD to software mode. hope that helps.

First tries on HF PAcket
Hello to all of the group from IW5CI from Italy , US callsign KD2KRK.
?
i am trying to setup an hf packet station and it was a really good news to ear that this group promotes hf packet.?
?
It reminds me when i used to use packet with the C64 in the eighties!
?
My setup is a vintage HP-85A personal Computer with serial interface and a KAM+ TNC . I hace connected this setup to my Yaesu FT-5000 using the rear packet port.
?
The radio setup was not simple because the packet mode of the ft-5000 is very narrow . I managed to decode some packets with the MENU "PKT SFT" set to 1700 HZ because at lower or higher settings i could not decode anything.
?
i have some question to ask before putting the radio in rx of 14.105 to try to ear some traffic from the states:
?
the radio does not go in TX if i don't set the squelch on , but how i can receive low signals in ssb with the squelch on?
which is the correct frequency to tune the ft-5000 to receive the traffic with my setup? is it correct 14.105 packet lsb?
it's possible to receive the traffic from europe? in that case i will leave my radio active during the weekend and i hope someone will leave a message on my iw5ci-1 pbbs!

Grid Down Exercise Planning Group Wanted
Good Day All,
The TPRFN Network is looking for a group of people to start the planning of a possible Grid Down Exercise, either in the late spring or early summer this year.? The exercise would revolve around Packet Radio (all modes), Winlink (offline post office), APRS (RF over HF) & AREDN RF connected networks, and any other digital modes that can integrated.? We would like to partner with any other EMCOMM groups that have or would like to implement a backbone RF network in your local regions. Looking to include: ARRL/ARES AuxComm USA AuxComm State Groups RRI Any other Emergency Management Organizations Others This is just conceptual and would require some planning but at the same time not be to difficult for people/groups to participate.? The only way to fully understand what our RF EMCOMM capabilities really are in the US is to put it to the test!? If you have an interest in being part of this organizational group, please use the Contact Us form on the www.tprfn.net website.? Feel free to share this email/post with local groups or clubs.? As always the TPRFN Network is continuing to look for additional Hub & Polling Stations across the US.. Apologies for any grammar or spelling errors!

Re: HF packet data rates
¿ªÔÆÌåÓýGetting ready to sell on QRZ my two PK-232 modems with cables and some manuals as I use two SCS modems and do not need these excess modems any longer. ? Probably will ask 75 a piece not to include PS&T for wherever the buyer is located. ? As a package w/o shipping costs, I probably would settle for 125 USD if paid thru PayPal (VENMO has been compromised as has been Zelle). ? W4JDY ? Hi Michael and welcome to the group. ? My knowledge is limited, but let's first make sure the TNC is working. Download and run PuTTY (there is a 32 and 64 bit version) Depending if your computer has a USB or DB9 serial port, you'll need to determine the com port number by going into Windows Control Panel - Hardware (assuming you're running windows)? ? Let's start there. But email me some info - TNC model, type of computer and exactly what you want to do. ? I'm at ww2bsa@... ? Also, check out for more info on HF packet on 14.105. ? 73 de Chris, Moderator
