i am trying to setup an hf packet station and it was a really good news to ear that this group promotes hf packet.?

It reminds me when i used to use packet with the C64 in the eighties!

My setup is a vintage HP-85A personal Computer with serial interface and a KAM+ TNC . I hace connected this setup to my Yaesu FT-5000 using the rear packet port.

The radio setup was not simple because the packet mode of the ft-5000 is very narrow . I managed to decode some packets with the MENU "PKT SFT" set to 1700 HZ because at lower or higher settings i could not decode anything.

i have some question to ask before putting the radio in rx of 14.105 to try to ear some traffic from the states:

the radio does not go in TX if i don't set the squelch on , but how i can receive low signals in ssb with the squelch on?
which is the correct frequency to tune the ft-5000 to receive the traffic with my setup? is it correct 14.105 packet lsb?
it's possible to receive the traffic from europe? in that case i will leave my radio active during the weekend and i hope someone will leave a message on my iw5ci-1 pbbs!
