Amplifier Relay Needed?
7
I have a new LA1K and i get different opinions on whether a Amp Relay (Ameritron ARB -704) is needed to be run between the Icom 7600 and my LA1K. I didn't think so but the dealer said it just adds safety. Opinions? TIA.. de K2HVE

Resolved - Curious LA-1K Shutdown Problem
17
My LA-1K was flawless into my dummy load. It was flawless into the dummy load attached to the HF-AUTO tuner. When I connected my non-resonant dipole to the HF-AUTO and tried to operate my LA-1K, something transient kept shutting the LA-1K down. After much testing with no resolution I called Mark at Palstar and described the issue. I told him what antenna I used and he immediately asked if I use a surge protection device in the transmission line. I had two devices in line - a PolyPhaser device and an AlphaDelta device. I first removed the AlphaDelta device and there was no change in performance - still no amp operation. Upon removing the PolyPhaser the amp worked as it should, and the HF-AUTO even tuned the antenna to frequency faster than before. The surge suppression devices, when used in a higher power line with a non-resonant antenna, can create a transient SWR condition which the LA-1K can detect, thus causing a shutdown. The amp works perfectly now. And I now search for a workable lightning protection solution for my station.

Thanks for the ad. Picking up my AL1K from HRO next week.I have to wait for my electrician to bring a 240v line over to shack before going on line with it It will mate with the Auto Tuner hopefully with no problems. 73 Chris K2HVE Bayville, NJ

Amp bypass SWR 160M SSB only with LMR 400 COAX
6
This might be the strangest behavior of this amp I have heard of so far. I have a 257' EF wire with a 9 to 1 UNUN (grounded). My HF-AUTO tuner shows SWR 1.08 for example. Only in SSB as soon as I begin to talk the amp trips off with the SWR. I'm watching the SWR on the tuner, its not budging but on the amp it is jumping all over until it bypasses. Driving the amp with only 10 watts causes this to happen and I have tried it with my 7610, 7300, and 991A. Now what I'm not understanding is this. This behavior occurs only when I use a 75' run of LMR 400 coax. I have even tried a different piece of 75' LMR 400 and the result is the same. If I use a 150' run of LMR 240 the amp doesn't trip at all. I have replaced all the jumpers between the components to eliminate them as the cause. Same result. I can tune this same wire for 80M and the amp works fine regardless of the coax feed. Any thoughts? -- 73, Jerry WX1FLY

Question: Antenna Connections
10
I have both the LA-1K and the HF-Auto. I have three (3) antennas that I would like to use. My question is, should I connect the antennas to the LA-1K and do the antenna switching at the amplifier or should I connect the antennas to the HF-Auto and switch antennas at the tuner. Thanks. Rudy, W5HRH

Amp tripping out on 80 mtr CW
Hello All After much testing and adjusting my IC-7610 I was finally able to eliminate this problem of not operating CW on 80 mtrs without the amp going in bypass mode. On the 7610 you can adjust the rise time of the dots and dashes. Mine was on the factory default of 4 ms and I turned it up to 8ms and the problem disappeared.‘I plan to work the Thanksgiving weekend CQWW CW contest on all bands and will update all on whether this adjustment really did the trick. For any of you experiencing this problem Look to see if you have an adjustment for CW rise time and try a higher setting W1BQ Alan

Problem on 80 mtr CW
10
I am a proud owner of this amp for one month. I also own the HF-Auto tuner and it works slick. I am a contester and have used this amp tuner combo in a RTTY and SSB contest running 800 watts SSB and 400 watts RTTY with no problems. this past weekend I was operating the ARRL CW SS contest and only on 80 mtrs I could not keep the amp operating while trying to send the 7 seconds of report. No other band had this problem of kicking into bypass before I could transmit the entire report. SWR was reading 1.1 on the amp and 1.06 :1 on the HF-Auto. After the contest I ran tests into my dummy load to eliminate the chance it was the antenna or feed line. I do not have a lightning protector in line. same problem existed. After calling Palstar and discussing the problem Mark sent me a software upgrade. The fact that this problem only occurs on 80 mtrs and into a dummy load as well as to the antenna via the tuner was a new one for Mark. After installing the new firmware I ran the same test and found an improvement which was everything work as expected up to 500’watts now butt try to go higher and after 8!seconds of transmitting a certain signal the amp tripped into the Bypass mode. has anyone else experienced anything like this? Is the LA-1K the best amplifier to pair with the HF-Auto?
22
I have the HF-Auto and am looking to get an amplifier. Naturally the first one I am considering is the LA-1K. Palstar's web site says: "Palstar custom-designed the LA-1K to work as the perfect match for our very popular HF-AUTO autotuner.". Can anyone explain how it is the 'perfect match'? I mean, what is it about the connection/communication between the two that would make it superior to say, the HF-Auto with another amplifier (e.g. Acom 700S)? -- 73, Norm/KC1BMD

No Power out
5
My amp was working perfectly - It is less than a year old. I had to take down my station for a window repair and I put it back together and now have no power out from it. All seems to be connected - FTdx power out to LA1k - ALC to ALC. The amp sees the FTdx - in that it shows power as 100 watts - but does not show any more. I am using the HF-Auto tuner. Any thoughts? Latest Firmware

I am feeling really stupid, I cannot find the latest firmware. V1.02E is the latest one mentioned on the site and non of the firmware versions listed is clickable? I hope the latest firmware may help with the noise issues of my device.

I have two old transceivers a Kenwood TS-830S and a Yaesu FT-101ZD that I want to use on tube nets. Do I need to use an amplifier keying Interface like the Ameritron ARB-704 if I want to use these radios with my la1k? Thank you. Merlin K3MEJ

White screen
22
My week old LA-1k started just booting up to a white screen. Tried plugging a cable into the Yaesu jack like suggested on here. It did nothing. Ended up dissconnecting the keying line. It boots up then. Talked to Mark at Palstar. He had me run a ground wire from the Amp to the transciever. So far it has worked. Hope it keeps working.

Remote use

Now that I have my new Flex 6400 that I can easily remote into, I was wondering if there's anything in the works for remote use of the LA-1K ?

Keying Relay Buffer Debate
34
Would like to get a discussion going on if it is necessary to use a *Keying Relay Buffer* when using the Palstar LA1K Amp. I called Palstar this week and talked with one of their technicians and told him I was planning on getting an LA1K amp in the near future. I told him that I am using an Icom IC-7300. My question to the tech was do I need to use a Keying Buffer in between the LA1K and the IC-7300. Palstar told me it wasn't necessary and that I just needed to use one RCA cable and connect it to the PTT connection. He also said to keep the transmit power on the exciter to 40 watts. Comments, suggestions greatly appreciated. Mike.

Thinking about buying a LA-1k What power output should I expect on 6 meters? I will running on 120 volts.
