EV: Titling our subjects 2
With this new group from eGroups, is it unnecessary to begin our subject with "EV" as we have done in the past, to help folks filter these messages? I notice all the messages seem to start with: [ev_update]

hood shield...do they work? Where to get it???
I'd ask where to get it (bug deflector) for EVC. I was looking for one before my trip to Alaska this last June, but could not find it anywhere. Next summer we are doing up there again and it would help for sure, but I still do not know where to get it. Any ideas? Thanks. Severin. Severin D. Chayka @ PCI Energy Services.

93 EV MV Custom
I am about to be the new owner of a 93 Eurovan MV with custom raised top and lift (it belonged to a person in a wheelchair). I am interested in any info available on tents that can attach to this van (since it is not a EVC) and helpful hints on maintenance, etc. I am looking forward to joining the Eurovan owners club. Flasher Relay 92 EVC 5 2
We are trying to install a EV cruise control unit from a wreck on 92 Eurovan camper. Everything has gone together so far but the cruise control doesn't work and neither do the 4 way flashers or horn. Questions any one have an idea what relay the flasher is. Not listed in my operators manual and I am still waiting for the service manual. 2. What fuse or circuit number is for the cruise control in early eurovans, cruise circuit is not listed in the manual or fuse box for my 92 EVC. 3. What circuit is the horn on? Cruise/ Flasher Relay 92 not working EVC 5
We are trying to install a EV cruise control unit from a wreck on 92 Eurovan camper. Everything has gone together so far but the cruise control doesn't work and neither do the 4 way flashers or horn. Check the following. 1) Electrical connections in steering column. 2) Do the turn signals work? If so check the contacts on hazard light switch. 3) Did you install The VSS in the back of the speedometer? 4) The VSS connection from the instrument panel to the Cruise control computer is made using a jumper on the fuse block. 5)The pin for the 12v connection for the cruise, as shown in the electrical diagrams, is used by Westfalia in the campers. You have to use an adjacent pin. Chris

92 EVC5 Cruise Control
Well 9 hours into the cruise control installation we have gotten back the high beams, the horn, and the flasher. The problem was absolutely filthy contacts and interior on the donor cruise control arm and switch. You can't believe how small these bits will come apart after cleaning the heck of a bunch of this stuff it works. The only problem we are left with the cruise control doesn't work. The cruise switch has been tested extensively for continuity and function, from the switch to the stock, to wiring harness to the loom. The vacuum pump works when we apply power to it, and the pump generates suction. The problem is you can't bench test stuff that only goes active at 30 kmh or faster. The remaining questions are: 1. Can anyone fax me the pages from Bentley on troubleshooting the cruise system? 2. I would like a list of the relays by position and number from a vehicle with auto, air, cruise. Alternately if you know what position the relay(s) or relay for cruise is I would like to know what the relay # is and the position I should find it in. Reg phone or fax 780-459-0813.

EVC Questions (thanks) 3
Tad, Seems to me that DC is pretty centrally located on the east east, not more than a few hours from many major cities (and VW dealers). You should be able to get a list of EVC dealers off the Internet and start calling around to see who can offer you the best price. Of course, you can also let your "local" dealers know that you're going to get prices from other dealers and are willing to travel a few hours to get a better deal --- that's generally enough incentive for a dealer to cut a better deal. At the very least, you should be able to get the base price of a EVC down to around 33K (not including sales tax). There's really no need for any dealer installed options, which primarily only serve to give the dealer additional profit. That dealer obviously isn't very interested in your business. Look elsewhere. I seem to recall there was a discussion about that several months ago -- you should be able to find it in the EV-Update archives. The answer will probably depend upon whether or not the alloy wheels are certified to carry the additional weight of the EVC. Sheldon '97 EVC

EVC Questions / Wheels / Load Capacity
My concerns were generated when no one would or could give me specific data about wheel load capacity. Also, Tire Rack has wheels for the EV and the MV but not the EVC. The one wheel I found that had a posted load rating was 1431 - I assume that is pounds and I assume you multiply by 4 to see fit it will support a vehicle (if anyone has data that contradicts my assumptions - please tell me) The curb weight for the EV, MV and EVC is respectively 4220, 4348 and 5235. The GVWR is 5600, 5798 and 5997. The GVWR for the MV and the EVC are so darn close that I would think the alloys VW puts on the MV should work on the EVC. I wish I could get someone to provide me with data that confirms this assumption. --- Sea2river@... wrote: ------------------------------------------------------------------------ __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? New EVC purchase 2
Tad, Well, my answer to that sales person would be that I need a reasonably discounted price so I could afford to ENJOY the EVC. I'd also tell him that I'd never buy the vehicle for the window sticker price because I also "need the money." You might also remind him that while he says he really needs $36k for the EVC, you don't have to purchase it from him and therefore "need" to take your business elsewhere. ;-) A dealer deserves to earn a fair profit margin on the vehicles he sells, and the consumer deserves to receive a fair price for the vehicle he purchases. Window sticker price, with the exception of certain vehicles such as the GM Saturn line, generally includes at least a 10% -15% profit margin PLUS dealer hold-backs and other incentives which can be quite sizeable. I believe someone posted the actual dealer cost figures for the EVC a while back which you should be able to find in the EV-Update Archives. That would be a good starting point for negotiation. Call a few dealers on the east coast. I'm sure you'll be able to find one who will be more than happy to sell you a EVC at a reasonable price. Sheldon '97 EVC

EVC Questions / Wheels 5
Tad, the EV wheels will fit the EVC, however, I have not found anyone at VW who will assure me that they have a load rating that will support the extra weight of the EVC. Tire Rack does not have any aftermarket wheels for the EVC although they have several for the EV. The only wheels I have found that state that they were designed to support the EVC are the Projektzwo Wheels http://www.1552design.com/suspension/projektzwo_wheel.htm, they are relatively expensive - about $2K for the set. Let me know if you find other wheel choices for the EVC, for the time being I have learned to live with the wheel covers. --- tmitsui@... wrote: snip ------------------------------------------------------------------------ __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Anybody have old speakers laying around? 9
My '93 GL's speakers have rotted out...actually, it's probably only one or two of them...I know the right front dash speaker is bad. Has anybody upgraded their speakers and have their old ones laying around? Wanna sell 'em? On another note...perhaps someone has bought replacements that work really well and aren't very expensive? -- Bill Salopek ICQ: 20536257 No worries... EVC Questions (thank you) 5
Sheldon, Alex and schellhas-@... (Sorry, I couldn't find your name), Thank you for the comments. I'll call VW to make sure the 2kEVC will be released or not. Since 99EVC will be at a local dealer shortly, however, I may not be able to wait for the 2kEVC, if it will be released. I hard the differences between 2k MV and 99 MV were side/rear tinted glass windows, remote key system and a brake-wear indicator. None of them are critical for me, though I like the remote key feature. It may be difficult for me to expect below $36k price. The price may be something to do with area I live, the DC area. I called local dealers and found only 3 dealers could handle the EVC in 13 dealers. A dealer required 6 month delivery. By the way, I have found one another difference between EV and EVC at the VW web site. EVC do not have alloy wheels but steel wheels. Can I use the optional Rondo alloy wheels for the EVC? Thanks, Tad

Eurovan Fires
Dear Listmates, I have not owned a Eurovan for long but one thing that has struck me is the number of "FIRES" in Eurovans. There weren't that many imported to the small underpopulated part of Canada I live in. Yet I know of at least 3 that were destroyed by fire. One in 1993 in a refueling error, and 2 others. The fires were not related to camping but engine compartment /fuel system related. I bring this up not alarm anyone but to point out there may be problems associated with this aspect of EVs and to suggest if you think you have fuel related problems get them checked out NOW> Reg

'93 Eurovan Losing Power (Resolved!)
After all the many helpful replies I received about my loss of power problem I wanted to report that last Thursday finally made the decision to get the catalytic converter replaced by a Meineke shop on the calculated probability that the CC was the culprit. Turns out that the CC was VERY clogged (as the technician showed me, once he had removed it). The new one cost $235 installed, which is a far cry from the $800-plus VW wanted. The Eurovan now runs fine, without the progressive power loss and heat I was having, and I fully expect to survive at least long enough to witness the turn of the millennium. But a few points: Since the installation of the new CC, I can tell that I am getting just a little less power when accelerating than I used to have (before the CC problem). This is more noticeable in 4th and 5th gears, especially if I am climbing. Should I be concerned about this? I'm assuming the air flow on the new CC (being generic) may be a little different than on the standard VW part. The technician who replaced the CC told me that they don't fail on their own, and that something damaged mine; and he advised me to try to find out what the cause was. He suggested ignition system problems, distributor problems, backfiring, etc. Again, thanks to all who helped me on this.

Gasoline Smell 6
I submitted this question earlier but I guess it never made it out of my mailbox. I smell gasoline from the engine compartment of my 93 5cyl EV. I have replaced all fuel lines, even the tiny connector lines, yet the smell persists. I have two guesses, both related to the vapor recovery system. Either my charcoal canister is releasing the fumes, instead of trapping them and they somehow get into the engine compartment, or it is the little black magnetic valve on the firewall that opens to release the fumes into the injection system. It could also possibly be a leaking injector seal, but the smell is on the right side, the side where the battery is located. I have tried to pin it down but I can't find the source. Does anyone have any ideas? Not knowing where the fumes come from makes me a bit nervous, since I only carry a small fire extinguisher. I hope someone knows the answer . . . thanks Eckhard
