Gasoline Smell

Eckhard Rolz

I submitted this question earlier but I guess it never made it out of my
mailbox.
I smell gasoline from the engine compartment of my 93 5cyl EV. I have
replaced all fuel lines, even the tiny connector lines, yet the smell
persists. I have two guesses, both related to the vapor recovery
system. Either my charcoal canister is releasing the fumes, instead of
trapping them and they somehow get into the engine compartment, or it is
the little black magnetic valve on the firewall that opens to release
the fumes into the injection system. It could also possibly be a
leaking injector seal, but the smell is on the right side, the side
where the battery is located. I have tried to pin it down but I can't
find the source. Does anyone have any ideas? Not knowing where the
fumes come from makes me a bit nervous, since I only carry a small fire
extinguisher.
I hope someone knows the answer . . .
thanks
Eckhard

I found the gas smell from my '93 EV came from the rubber gasket around
the gas filler neck

Thanks Steve and Mo for your help
I replaced all the clamps and hoses, but the gasoline smell is still
there. I think the clamps are tight, but who knows. Where else could
gasoline smell come from?
Thanks
Eckhard

Could some have soaked into the absorbent mat under the engine?

Check your fuel hoses where they connect together on the right side on the
engine. The hose clamps used by VW do not seem to clamp tight enough. I
replaced mine, which stopped the leak. It started again yesterday and I
tightened the clamps to stop it. I may need to replace these lines.

I seem to only have the problem when the engine is cold.

I posted something on this long ago. I had the gas smell and leak at cold start
up. I checked and replace the clamps but it was a split fuel line on the right
side of the engine that attached to a metal line (cold start rail).
