EV: '93 EV Losing Power, and on to 99 EVC rear heater questions
t4mv@... writes: Dennis, Norman and all - Assuming the 93 EV is similar to the 99, a great way to talk around this component location description is to view Good Old David Burket's Xcountry Xpedition 99 Special Dispatch dealing with underbelly pictures: <A href="http://www.consolidatedsystems.com/xcountry/belly1g.htm">Wider View, showing nearly all of frame</A> and <A href="http://www.consolidatedsystems.com/xcountry/belly1j.htm">Muffler & Catalytic Converter</A>. And as long as we are under there, I have a question about the 99 EVC blower fan for the rear passenger area. It appears from Dave's photo that the fan draws air from a plenum along the right side of the vehicle and blows it through the floor vents behind the front passenger seat. Am I seeing water lines on the left side for a heater core? What is the purpose of the heavy wire mesh on the front and rear of the unit? EV: Testing Oxygen Sensor
webbd@... writes: Dennis - I have a fault code reader for my 93 Mercury Tracer, which I used while troubleshooting power loss problems. It told me there were possible faults with the oxygen sensor and mass air flow sensor. A do-it-yourself book described how to test the oxygen sensor by removing it from the vehicle and applying heat to the tip with a propane torch while monitoring the output cable with a voltmeter. It passed the test. The MAF sensor also passed the crude test provided for free by an auto parts store. I eventually caved in and surrended the car to a shop specializing in engine diagnostics, and they found high resistance in the MAF cable, along with dirt on the sensor itself. A cable replacement and cleaning of the MAF sensor cured the problem. Warning: the specialist told me that the do-it-yourself test for the oxygen sensor was a very bad practice, a good way to fry the sensor. Apparently I was lucky. I'm going to miss the simplicity of my '71 Ford when we finally depart company. It has a 6 cylinder engine with manual transmission, and it just keeps going and going and going... I believe the reports that say you can't kill that engine! Bill Armstrong, EVC Speculator '71 Econoline (home brew camper)

Studdable Snow Tires for EVC
Nokian has such a tire available and yes it is reinforced. Contact: GREER ENTERPRISES 1909 S. 74th Street West Allis, WI 53219 Phone: (414) 545-2296 Fax: (414) 543-3156 http://www.dias.net/~greerent/index.html to take a look at the tires available. I bought the NRW Reinforced from them which is a nonstuddable snow tire. The 10 is studdable as I remember. Marve '95 EVC

Canadian Rockies Trip '95 EVC
Just returned last week from a trip from Wisconsin to the Canadian Rockies. Everything in the camper worked fine for the trip. Saw few EVC's on the trip until Aug. 22 when we camped at Mosquito Creek campground which has a total of 32 sites. Believe it or not, 4 of them were occupied by EVCs that night; 1 from BC, 1 from CA, 1 From MN, and mine from WI. We could have had a reunion right there! Any list members who were there that night? For those of you lusting for Westfalia campers: a German on holiday in Canada with a rented Dodge van camper and a Westfalia EuroVan in Germany came over and wanted to see my camper in Jasper. After he looked it over he said he was very jealous. He would much prefer the Winnebago conversion to his Westfalia at home. However, there is another side to this story. When I asked him what engine he had in his EuroVan at home he hesitated and had a sheepish look on his face. He said he had an engine specially built for them. It is a five cylinder and will drive the EuroVan at 205 km/hr. That's over 120 mph! Well, I guess if you get to drive on the Autobahn with no speed limit that would be nice. I'm quite satisfied with my stock 5 cylinder. It consistently turned in over 15 mpg pulling a utility trailer and approached 20 mpg when we had a tailwind. Met a number of EVCers who were having problems with the fridge. I wonder how many of the problems are due to insects or spiders decreasing the airflow in the exhaust and intake pipes of the fridge. Once in a while I remove the outside cover on mine and put a vacuum hose over the exhaust tube to suck any developing obstructions out. I also run the fridge for a while after each time I wash the car to dry out any moisture that may have gone in there. So far my fridge is working fine. It's capacity is to cool about 40 degrees below ambient temp. If I have things which need to be cooled down in the fridge, I put them in in the evening when the fridge has more cooling power during the cool hours. I also try to park with the fridge on the shaded side of the car whenever possible, even better if the whole car can be shaded to keep the interior temps down. If the interior is at 120 degrees, I can't expect the fridge to cool below 80 degrees. Marve '95 EVC

Question about EVC 4
Hello Everyone, I?m thinking to buy the EV Camper and I have just joined the mailing list. I went to a VW dealer today to see a 2000 EV MV. It was very nice car but unfortunately they didn,t have the Camper. I'm sorry for the begginer questions, but may I have some about the EVC? 1. I know the EV camper is heavier and longer and I wonder how the differences effect on the driving feeling. Is there any difference between the normal EV and the camper? By the way, I felt the MV's handling was good enough. 2. Sales person I talked said there would be no 2000 EV Camper since Winnebago build the car based on a base EV made on every other year. Is this true? 3. 1999 EV does not have a remote key and I really like it. The sales person told me there is no remote key option for 1999 EV from WV. Is there any after market product? 4. As a nature of that kind of car, I understand I can?t expect a large discount, but is the price, $36k, reasonable? 5. I don't dislike the white color but why another color variations are not available? Any response would be very much appreciated. Thanks, Tad

Shocks for EV 2
I'm still fumbling around on this egroup thing. A big thanks to Steve Maller for maintaining our previous list. I'm going to break down and install the Bilstein's on the EV. Does anyone have suggestions for a mail order supplier? I can search the auto parts stores locally, but I'm in no hurry and can easily order them and wait for the mailman. Thanks in advance, David

EV: 95 EVC 5 snow tires
Hi Geoff, Hows the sky business? Nokia makes some pretty good snow tires (although I have heard they are quite noisy). Also, there is a German tire that I can't pronounce (starts with an "h") that has a reinforced sidewall and sufficient load rating. I'll try to remember to check next week when I take my wifes car into Discount Tire for rotation and balancing. If you like, I'll also get some prices. Might make a good excuse to get back up to Denver. John nightsky wrote: -- mailto:jwwaterman@... John Waterman Parker,CO

cv joint
Help - my husband has begun the cv joint job on our 93 ev and ran into a slight problem. He un bolted them from the van but was unable to get them off. Does anyone know if there's a trick to this? We had this happen when our mechanic was trying to remove our transmission from the engine. He was so frustrated he took breaks to smash rocks : ). Turned out there was a bolt hidden waaaaay up in there (it was his first EV - he's done VW though for over 20 years). My husband thinks he might have had the jack in a spot that made him unable to seperate the joint from the van and he'll try it again this afternoon - but in case it isn't the problem, if anyone else has run into this - Puhleeeze let me know ASAP! We leave tomorrow afternoon for NJ (if this works) otherwise it's a rental van (yikes!). Thanks, Cyndi

CV joint removal procedure was cv joint 4
From the Bentley manual Vehicles with manual transmission * Install support 3250 to support left and right-hand upper control arm * loosen hex bolt for axle shaft/wheel hub when vehicle is standing on its wheels * remove sound deadener pan * Remove bolt for wheel bearing housing/ lowerball joint * Remove bolt for shock absorber/stabilizer link * Separate axle shaft at transmission drive flange * Push shock absorber completely together * Remove axle shaft. Other notes. You may not need to install the supports. Loosen but don't remove the bolt that holds the axle shaft, it the shaft is stuck, you can tap on the bolt to loosen the shaft. The shock absorbers/stabilizer link are easier to remove when the car is on the ground. You may have to lift the car 1/4" to get them off. Do not hammer on the shock! The directions in the manual don't tell you to remove the 6 bolts on the inside of the drive shaft, but you need to do this also. If you have a automatic add the following *remove multifunction switch connector *Remove bolts from rear bonded rubber mounting at subframe *Remove axle shaft after pushing engine/transmission slightly forward. *On 91-92 models the bolts for the right side and left side shafts are different lengths Torques *Axle shaft to flange 59 ft lbs *Wheel bearing housing to ball joint 41 ft lb *Wheel bolts to wheel hub 118 ft lb (I better tighten mine!) *shock absorber to control arm 118 ft lb *axle shaft to wheel hub 148 ft lb *Bonded rubber mounting to subframe 33 ft lb Hope that helps! EV windows 2
I have rear windows that can't be opened on my 93EV. Does anyone know where to get one or two windows that slide open? My dealer here laughed at me and said it was impossible to retrofit the van with such windows. The problem, though, is that he knows little about VWs and less about EVs. Thanks Eckhard

Howdy.... What are the benefits of having the little plastic guard that you can put on the hood. Does it reduce the insect splatters on the hood? How much does it cost? Chris 95" EB
