95 EVC engine cooling
2
Hi everyone. I am having issues with engine cooling on my 95 EVC. I had no lower speed fans operation and no after run fan operation or coolant pump. I checked both resistors and they are good and I have both fan speed operation when I jump the gray, upper radiator temp sensor. I just replaced the 4 pin lower, blue sensor and got low speed fans at lowered engine temps and then high speed fans with high engine temps but the speed never reduces after the engine cooled while running. Additionally, when I turned the engine off when really hot, and removed the key, the fan operation stopped and there was no after run pump function. Whe the key was replaced at quarter turn, high speed fans and pump came on. Any suggestions on where to turn at this point would be much appreciated. TIA, Sean

P0171 Code: Trouble diagnosing
7
Hi everyone, My 2003 Eurovan has an intermittent p0171 that I can't seem to find the source of the vacuum leak. I first got the code about 5 or 6 years ago, and when I went hunting for a vacuum leak, the brake booster was cracked. I taped it at first, then replaced it and things seemed better. Still 2-3 times a year, typically after being on the freeway for a longer period and exiting, the code will come back. I have tried spraying carb cleaner on all the lines I can find, and don't get any difference. When I checked the short term fuel trim with an OBD tool it came back at .78% and in reading this thread (https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=672580) it should be something more like 20% when there's a leak. I'm not really sure what else to do so could really benefit from some troubleshooting advice and things to check. Any typical leaking spots? Ways to check other vacuum lines? At 21 years old, I'm sure there's rubber decaying but damned if I can't find where the heck the trouble is. I also have not touched the MAF at this point, assuming that it is happening when I come back down to idle when the throttle body isn't open and air is leaking in. But maybe that's the wrong conclusion. Appreciate any advice and troubleshooting steps. Thanks! Menko -- Menko Johnson menkoj@...

3D printer designs for Eurovans
5
Just curious is there is a good repository of 3D printer designs for Eurovans. If not, maybe I can start one. I've got access to several small 3D printers at my school (just need to buy media). As these parts get more difficult to find, might be nice to have a resource for 3D printing some parts A quick google yields some results - https://www.yeggi.com/q/eurovan/ among others I could use one of those little black screw caps that goes on the cabin fluorescent bulb covers. I'll go ahead and start a post on eurovanrescue.com with some of the resources I find.

New topic = new thread please
5
Just as a general rule of thumb / good forum etiquette: when posting a completely new topic please start your own thread! It’s simple, just click on the “New Topic’ button on the L menu bar (4th one down). Thread hijacking is becoming very common here and it detracts from the functionality of the well-oiled machine / searchable repository of information this forum could be. We will all benefit from this simple action. -- Justin 2000 EVW 1.9TDI Syncro 5-spd 501k mi :-)

2000 EVW alternator swap and brush change: 150A to 90A
This alternator service/swap 150a to 90a was done as and experiment since I decided I didn’t needed the big bad 150a for my needs and could possibly achieve some very small MPG gains w a 90a. Now 3 years later I can say there’s no noticeable difference... FYI the alternator on my 4-cyl AHU TDI engine is the same as the ones on the VR6 engines and IIRC the 93-95 5-cyl models as well. The two are a direct swap physically. Later 2001-2003 models might have a different two pin plug style (oval vs. square) but this is something easily remedied by sourcing the correct plug (ubiquitous and STD on a basically all VW models (Jetta, Passat, Golf, Etc) in a variety of places on the wiring harness pre 2000) and replacing yours with that—slickly by re-pinning but functionally the same via shadetree methods by cutting the OE plug and installing the correct one to match the alt via your preferred method, soldering or quick butt to butt wire coupler. 150a alternator on the top, 90a on the bottom Brushes still functional with normal wear but down to the last 25%. Bentley wear limit is 0.10mm iirc so always to go still technically but as they say, “an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure…” New brush pack on L New brushes installed Part number for reference Post is copied from my recent blogpost: https://greaseworks.blogspot.com/2024/05/installing-new-alternator-brush-pack.html -- Justin 2000 EVW 1.9TDI Syncro 5-spd 501k mi :-)

can I drive van with door harness removed

I'm about to tackle the driver door harness repair and want to remove it. Will removing the harness affect any other areas like starting, driving or lights? I'm thinking not but want to be sure. Any help from the group always appreciated. Spencer 02 mvwk

front door pull handle cover removal 02mv
9
Can someone tell me how to remove the front door pull handle cover? Mine is grimy and need painting. A video shows one being pulled and sliding off the mounted handle but mine must be fused on after 22 years. I'm hesitant to use a screwdriver or blade of some sort thinking it will ruin the cover. Any tips or suggestions? Spencer 02mvwk

Water Incursion Mystery
4
I got in my 2003 weekender yesterday, which had been outside during a rainstorm, and when I put on my seatbelt the part of the belt that had been coiled up behind the pillar trim piece was wet. I'm at a bit of a loss on where water would get in that space to make the belt wet. I'd be interested in your thoughts - and any insight on how I could pull the trim and check for leaks (which probably also means pulling the rear facing seat behind the drivers seat). The only thing I can think is water getting in around the back slider window, but it all looks intact and seems like its a bit further back than where the belt is. Thanks..ds

Stereo - how to wire
3
I want to properly wire the following: - Sony - Head unit stereo - (4) Sony speakers, powered via head unit (standard speaker wires) - Amp & sub (always connected to house battery power, amp/sub located under jump seat behind driver seat) - AC inverter connected to house (mainly for basic charging & use of phone/laptop) - House battery (under driver seat) - Main/starting battery - Retain clock/memory/settings on head unit stereo when vehicle off - Prefer the ignition key position to still turn on radio - Rocker switch to allow music with stereo/amp/sub powered from house battery while keeping main/starting battery isolated from significant drain I attempted this in the past, but I don't think I had an isolator on the main/starting battery. When I turned on the rocker switch on the dash and powering the stereo/amp/sub for extended periods while camping, I think I was allowing the House battery to drain... but ALSO then it would level with the Main/Starting battery (discharging it in the process). At least I think that is what has been happening. Here is a crude diagram. Would anybody experienced in this agree that an isolator (as indicated in red) would address the Main/Starting staying "isolated" (at least in terms of the amp/sub)? Does the charge to the house have an isolator? But, I also wonder that if I don't change wire #7 from main, then the (4) speakers connected to the stereo will also be pulling power from the Main/Starting battery. On some trips, I just make a point to start the EV. But sometimes I forget for a bit while I'm rocking out for hours... and the main/starting battery drains. Not ideal as it is not really meant to do that.

A Question: Setting a Sales Price
2
Colleagues, I have to sell my 2000 EuroVan Winnebago this coming Fall. How do I go about setting a fair sale price? What criteria do I use? A quick look at the price tags sellers are asking for comparable vehicles exhibits a broad range even in the same market. It would be helpful to me in arriving at my final asking price to be able to justify the price tag using legitimate sources. Much thanks. Boss BCP8AW Single-DIN CarPlay Install
6
I just finished installing a single-DIN 8" screen radio and wanted to share my experiences. It was a lot of work, but so far I'm pretty happy with how it turned out. This Boss model has just about everything I wanted (Single DIN install with floating screen, adjustable height, wired and wireless CarPlay and Android auto, backup camera, 10 band EQ, etc.) This unit also can be purchased with different screen sizes (7, 8, 9 or 10 inches) giving you a lot of flexibility. See my website for more details https://xochi.com/evc/boss-bcp8aw I'm happy to answer questions here on the mailing list.

Boss BCPA8W Single-DIN CarPlay Install
Oops - minor correction: I had the model # wrong, it's not BCP8AW but rather BCPA8W. I corrected the subject line of this email and the URL: https://xochi.com/evc/boss-bcpa8w/ Of interest, there's also a 9 and 10" model with slightly different model #s (BVCP... rather than BCP...) but the features look identical to me. Anyone replaced the steering shaft/column upper bushing beneath the steering wheel switch gear?
2
I have substantial slop/play in my steering column/steering shaft within the steering column. Not an uncommon issue; cause is that the nylon bushing just underneath the directional indicator and wiper controls disintegrates over time. I have the new bushing, but the perishable thrust washer that maintains pressure on the spring above the bushing is no longer available. I have tried driving to screwdrivers between the spring and that thrust washer and lifting/prying,… A small amount of movement, but mostly just compressing the spring. I have tried using adjustable pump pliers, hoping that I could get a grip on it and then while twisting back-and-forth, I could walk the thrust washer back up to steering column, but no go. I’m not getting a good enough grip on the thrust washer. 1-Anyone know of a source anywhere on planet Earth for this thrust washer. 2-Anyone discovered how to get that thrust washer off without destroying it so the nylon bushing under the spring can be replaced and then reuse that thrust washer? 3-Anyone know if the steering column can be removed from the vehicle and then perhaps , remove the shaft from the bushing by removing the joint at the bottom of the steering shaft? Coolant hose connector 2000 EVC
9
Hi All, A three way hose connector which also has a connection for a sensor blew up yesterday and I had the van towed to Sierra German Auto in Bishop Ca, which doesn’t open until Monday . The part # PA 66 GF 30, is no longer available from VW. The part number also only shows the hoses. The schematic doesn’t show the connector as part of the parts. Im attaching a photo of the connector that failed and I’m hoping that someone knows where I can source a replacement part. Any help and all help very much appreciated. Please feel free to text me directly at 831-359-6562. Thank you! David 2000evc

Under hood insulation?
3
1997 ECV, 138k Greetings! I recently had to remove the hood insulation (what is left of it--there are some big holes from animals that have used it as bedding material) in order to access the wiper nozzles for replacement of the rubber grommet. Is this hood insulation necessary? I can put it back in, but it's probably 60% left. Thanks, Roger

In Need of Steering shaft bushing "Thrust Ring" # 701419341A
3
I am replacing the Nylon steering shaft bushing under the steering wheel and switch gear. It is held in place by a spring that is tensioned by a "Thrust Ring" Part # 701 419 341A which is no longer available from any of the usual sources. Bus Depot showed them, placed an order,....order was cancelled. Anyone have one? Brian in Austin, TX.

Thank you all and happy trails!
We've recently sold our 1995 EVC to another couple. They are ideal owners IMHO as they are both mechanical engineers and worked their way through college as auto mechanics. They also have plenty of previous VW experience and are avid campers so they seem like a great fit. Before I leave this group I wanted to say a huge collective thank you to all who participated in this group over the years. We benefited in so many ways from the incredible insights and knowledge shared in the group since we purchased our rig in 2008. It was instrumental in helping us understand how to keep the van running well and providing so many great experiences and memories. Without all that I don't know that we would have stuck it out for the 15+ years but I'm so glad we did. Thanks all and happy trails!
