What's Next...?
The next project on A1G, time permitting, will be to pick one of the car series that has the "group picture" and convert it to the larger individual pop-up images. Any nominations for which one you'd like to see done first? --Your moderator

old atlas locos
4
do loco's count on this page? I have an sd-45 I picked up on an auction. I also have a 2-8-2 steamer I saw run for 10 minutes and quit after my dad bought it new, about '75 or '76. I have about ten old freight cars, I know some of them are early 70's, in bad shap though. I also have a gp-40 shell, i think the cab roof is missing. those were the glory days of "n" wern't they

ATSF 90000
2
Here's a crossing of two of my interests in N-Scale... I went to type in the new Micro-Trains ATSF DC flat car into my accumulation database (I got a freebie from MTL for my help with the car-- wish I could remember what I sent them!) only to find that there already <was> an entry for "ATSF 90000". Anybody know what it was...? Well... it was the A1G "piggyback" flat car with two trailers, catalog number 2352. I guess we can declare that un-prototypical... --Your list-owner

[n_scale] ADMIN: Yahoo plans downtime
Not like this is going to have a big impact, given the current traffic volumes... :-( The Yahoo! Groups service will be down Friday March 15 9:00 PM PST (GMT-8) as we move our servers to a new facility. We expect the service to be back up the morning of Sunday March 17. I wouldn't expect "promptly" on the 17th, either... --Your list-owner

A1G 3000 Series Pulpwood Flat Cars
5
Howzit All, This list is awfully quiet, so maybe it's time I post something just to see if anybody is still out there! <g> I have one of the A1G 3000 series pulpwood flat cars (#3003, WM 756) and I've been looking for the other cars in the set for years now, without success. Anybody have some of these for sale? I don't need MIB, since I only have runners and I'll therefore be replacing the couplers and wheels anyway. Same for the plastic logs - twigs from the white stinkwood trees in my garden make a much better looking load. Regards, André Kritzinger, Cape Town. A1G 3000 Series Pulpwood Flat Cars

John, Thanks for the offer. The cars I'm looking for are the following, as shown on George Irwin's pages at http://gji.home.netcom.com/a1gindex.htm Catalog # Popup Image Reporting Marks Description AV AM AV MIB 3001 Image N&W 32850 Blue/White 6-8 7-10 3002 Image L&N 225875 Blue/White 6-8 7-10 3003 Image WM 756 Tuscan Red/White 6-8 7-10 3004 Image D&RGW 22846 Black/White 6-8 7-10 I have the Western Maryland one, but I'll even take another one if I can find it and alter the number. For WM it's a fictional car anyway, according to George, but it's still a nice looking car, especially considering its age. Regards, André Kritzinger, Cape Town. Hobby Stores
2
Folks, reviews of various hobby stores are probably better suited to larger venues on the 'net. I was recently at the Freight Yard and of interest for this group is that they do handle consignments of N Scale, which might occassionally include A1G equipment. I don't recall seeing any but that doesn't mean it wasn't there. --Your list-owner

"Premium Services" Again...
It looks like Yahoo is at it again, looking for you to answer a "survey" indicating your choices for a premium (i.e. Pay) service. This is the URL: http://sweepstakes.yahoo.com/groupspremiumsurvey2?source= The upshot of this is that there will probably be restrictions on what "free" groups will be able to do; i.e. message limits, archive size limits, number of members that can be added limits, etc. My intent is to shut down this list as soon as payment for it is required. I've already had an offer for another host, but those of you who are on this list and would like to see it continue should start thinking about alternate venues. I am most concerned about Bill Barr's N Scale list which will clearly be impacted by any new restrictions. It will probably be "belly up to the bar" for that sooner or later. I can't say I didn't see this coming... and please, let's refrain from business model discussions. --Your list-owner

Started in Atlas N 1969
I just joined the group & wanted to say hello to everyone. I was introduced to Atlas N scale in 1969 by my mother, who had seen train sets at the local hobby shop. As a school age boy, I didn't have room for much of a place to put my trains except the top of my desk, so thanks to my mother, I had found the answer. I mowed lawns & purchased my first Atlas train set for $19.95, it was a C&NW E8, 2 cars, caboose, oval of track, & transformer. And from there was the great beginnings of adventures in N scale. Today, my interests include; 1)Restoring Atlas steam locos & diesel locos back to running order, 2)Collecting old Atlas cars, 3)Collecting old Atlas catalogs, 4)Collecting old Atlas repair manuals, & 5)Sharing any info with other folks that love those Atlas trains. I'd like to hear from some of the members who have an interest in loco repair, I'm working on 2 0-8-0 steam locos at this time & also 3 E8 diesels. Sorry I got so long winded, I was just excited to find this group. Let me hear from some of you. Happy Railroading; Glenn Sanders Ellisville, MS USA

A1G in NSR
Just received the Sept/Oct 2002 issue of N Scale Railroading (or as I call it, "Kirk's Magazine" after its publisher Kirk Reddie). On the bottom of page 28 in the "Great Shots" section is a photo taken on Paul Machiaverna's layout. Prominently featured is a familiar car: CNJ 89224, an "A1G" gondola in black with white lettering and "Miss Liberty" herald. It was catalog 2403 when released as part of the A1G series. And there are still copies kicking around as part of the Rivarossi/Arnold re-release program. The only changes to the as-issued car are weathering, a load and Micro-Trains trucks and couplers. I'd say it holds up pretty well for a more than 30 year old car! Cheers, George

The elusive Transfer Caboose
Those of you who have been to the A1G website know that there is one car that is technically missing from the scans is the Transfer Caboose, catalog number 2274. That's because, at the time I completed the A1G website work, I didn't have one. What's made it difficult to locate one is that the later releases, which have a different window configuration, were also sold under the 2274 catalog number. In addition, the later cars also tended to appear in A1G sets, or at least the ones that have been sold on that famous Internet Trading Community. Well, I'm pleased to report that I have finally procured one of these elusive little items, and as soon as I can get a scanner that speaks Windows XP I will have it up for ya'll. Meanwhile, to those of you who were wondering whether this group was still active, yes, technically, it is, but "low volume of messages" would be an understatement. Cheers, George http://www.irwinsjournal.com

New A1G "accumulator"
2
I have recently began to accumulate some of the old Atlas freight cars, passenger cars and motive power. I figured since many collectors want the M-T cars, I would go for some of the older Atlas stuff I see at every single swap meet I attend, which usually goes for pretty cheap prices. I would like to find some information on A1G motive power (please email me offlist concerning A1G motive power). I have looked over George Irwin's A1G freight car site and found it a very valuable resource. I have a small but growing group of freight cars. Some in boxes, some not. I have a few locomotives (steam and diesel). I am particularly interested in freight cars and steam power at this time. I found that accumulating these old Atlas cars is much easier and not as stressful as trying to keep up with the M-T cars. Besides, preserving the heritage on N Scale is something that should be done. Atlas has come a long way, but I actually like the older cars. I hope I can help some fellow hobbyists find some of these old cars as I am currently on a buying spree, building my "accumulation". I will eventually have some surplus cars. I will list my surplus wares here first, so others who are preserving these cars can fill the holes in their fleet. Odd car
7
I recently purchased a boxcar off ebay which was sold as Atlas 2363 PRR 47011. I also purchased the actual 2363. I think the cars were swapped in their boxes. I have posted a picture of the odd boxcar in the photo section. I would like to know if this car is actually an A1G car or not. I haven't received the car as of yet. After looking over the A1G site, I cannot find a car lettered as this one is. Any help would be appreciated. Edward Bridges

Question about a referigerator cars place of manufacture
4
I recently purchased a #2394, Miller High Life 40' refirgerator car. I thought it was odd that the underframe says Atlas Austria on it. Wasn't this car made by Rivarossi in Italy? BTW...This car didn't have a box. Is this a complete car or do I need to find a new frame for the car? Any help would be appreciated. Edward Bridges

A1G packaging variations
Hi everybody, FWIW, in case anybody else other than me is interested in the boxes too, here are the different ways Atlas' 5" plastic boxes appeared: The earliest cars came in the taped Roco box ("Atlas Made In Austria" in top left corner) with no paper insert or cradle. There were merely clear plastic spacers or postioners to hold the car in place when the lid was put on. There was a single label stuck onto one end of the box indicating catalogue number and car type. This is the type of box my earliest cars (1967) came in. Shortly after (or maybe even concurrently) they began to use the blue cradle in the same outside box. In this case, the paper insert had only one end extended up the end of the outside box (the left end when facing the top of the box with "ATLAS" at the top) to list the car number and type. The top side of the insert (toward the cradle) was colored a light blue. Other cars in the line were listed on the bottom of the insert but passenger cars were absent. After the above came the most common form of packaging. The same outside box and blue cradle, but the papar insert was extended up both ends of the outside box and had the car number and type on each end. The insert was all-white with other cars in the line listed on the bottom including the standard heavyweight passenger cars. Keep in mind that the progression from one type of packaging to the next was fairly rapid. Probably only a matter of months. I'm pretty sure that by mid 1968 the third type was in place. Beginning in 1968, Atlas also began releasing the Rivarossi made cars and these came in a different plastic box which had a lid that "snapped" into place and just "ATLAS" at the top left corner. There was a blue cradle too although it was slightly different (shallower). The approximate manufacture date was printed on the bottom of the paper insert along with the Rivarossi stylized "R" Other cars available were listed on the bottom also. When Atlas began to make some cars here in the U.S.A., they used the same box as with the Riv cars but the paper insert was blank on the bottom and the ends now included the "railroad track" Atlas logo rather than just "ATLAS" My original beercan tank cars came with a clear plastic cradle but others had basically the same cradle as the Riv cars (blue). Then, of course, there were the car kits in cardboard boxes and the larger cars in bigger boxes but these would be different subjects. Regards, Doug

A1G wheels and 2304
Hi everybody, Speaking of A1G cars:>) Here is some more info that my be of interest to some of us. Atlas used a few different variations of wheels during the first generation. The earliest cars had wheels that were more of a bronze color than black. They also had a smaller diameter plastic insulation ring that could not readily be seen because the journal hid it. Shortly thereafter, the wheels were actually black but still had the smaller insulation ring. Then came the black wheels with a larger insulation ring that can be easily seen. Beginning with the importation of cars from Rivarossi, the wheels on these cars were silver with the larger ring. Some of the later releases from Roco (log flat, container flat, HI-Cubes, etc.) had these wheels too. Also the cars Atlas made here in the U.S.A. This may be of some help in determining the approximate iteration a particular car might be although I realize it is easy enough to swap trucks or wheels.Truck swapping can sometimes be detected because there are usually dents in the truck pins from the use of a tool to push them in. There is a variation regarding the 2304 Pacific Fruit Express 50' reefer that isn't covered in the Greenberg Guide, although it may be in other publications I'm not aware of. These came with either black or silver ends on them. Regards, Doug

Another thing I thought of.....
Oops. If another post shows up with this subject heading and is blank, it was a pre-keyboard problem:>) Anyway, I thought this might be useful in collecting the A1G cars too. Generally, the earliest cars from Roco (1966-1967) were painted with a very flat finish paint. In fact, it wasn't really stable and you could "shine" the paint just by handling the car. I know this from first hand experience (my Blatz car has evidence of this). Of course, as usual, there are exceptions. I have a fairly early Shell 3 dome tanker and the orange paint on it is more like the later satin finish. Anybody have one with the flat paint? I also have two of the Great Northern 40' boxcars, one very early and the other a little newer. On the oldest one, both the orange and green are flat finish whereas on the newer one, the green is flat but the orange is satin. The orange is more red on the newer car too. In both cases, the lettering is pretty shiny. As I stated above, later on they seem to have generally swtched to a more satin finish paint and you could rub this without changing the appearance. The paint on the Rivarossi made cars seems to have been fairly consistent. Some colors were flatter than others but you rub the paint and the appearance wouldn't change. Of course, maybe I'm all wet here because I just went and looked at my two blue bulkhead log flat cars, which were made later, and they have the flat paint which gets shiny with handling. Still, I think what I have stated here is generally true. Regards, Doug

Passenger Cars et al
2
Hi all... glad to see some life in this board! A few thoughts... With respect to the passenger cars being put up on the A1G website, yes, it's certainly something I'd consider. Although Rivarossi and then Arnold/Rivarossi have made these available for years now, they did "start" as A1Gs. There are two principal barriers to getting this done: (1) time (2) a new scanner - no, I still haven't gotten to that task. I am also concerned, though, about something I read on another board, that the "spookshow" site with all the locomotives including the A1Gs was dormant and that its owner was leaving the scale/hobby. If that's true, I might need to take on the task of putting the A1G motive power out on my site too; which will be a bit of a bother since I do not own all of it, or even most of it. With respect to posting wants, trading and selling, go for it. I don't see why not and maybe you can avoid *Bay fees. Just don't go overboard. With respect to boxed A1Gs, I think I mentioned that most of mine aren't, or won't ever be again since the boxes have been hopelessly separated from the cars. All for now... back to work... --Your list-owner

A1G auto rack automobiles
I am looking for some extra A1G auto rack automobiles. I recently acquired an old Atlas auto rack (PC) and there was three automobiles missing. Willing to pay fair price for these if anyone has any to spare. Thanks! Edward Bridges Granger, TX
