Hello, everybody!
Wow, George, thanks! Now, if I collect old Atlas cars (which I do) does that negate my MT accumulator status? <G> David -- "One grandfather worked for the Pennsylvania Railroad, The other worked for the Baltimore & Ohio. I have every damn right to be schizophrenic!"

Yay! Already 6 members!
Hello everybody, My name is Doug Gosha and I have been a member of the N Scale list for years now. Anyway, let's start this off with a little quizlet. What were the three basic packaging variations for cars in the standard (5") size plastic boxes? (Remember, this is A1G). Doug

a1g background info
Excerpted from a recent email to George Irwin <snip> *** Also some background info on the Roco cars. In addition to the N cars, Roco tooled some of the same cars in HO scale (the helium car comes to mind) for AHM. So the choice of which cars to make, some of which, as you note at a1g, led to some models based on pretty esoteric prototypes. I don't know if there is a direct connection, but ConCor's European rep, Nick Pfusterschmid, who got the Roco N stuff back for ConCor a few years ago, also worked for AHM on their HO product line in the late 1960's. One reason these cars do not surface very often is that the N cars are tooled in groups of 4. So if a US company wants one car, they usually take all 4 to save on set up and production charges. But that can mean taking a "dog" or two to get the car(s) you want. A good example of this was the "longitudinal hopper" run by ConCor in the mid 90's) (not done for Atlas but done for Model Power) http://all-railroads.com/1-176101.gif This car was in the 4-car group along with the 86 ft high cube boxcar that we really wanted. But we had to take the hopper car in order to get the boxcar (Atlas a1g 3130 series). The mold is set up in a + shape with the plastic entering the mold in the center and flowing out to the 4 individual cavities at the 4 points of the "cross". If I still worked at ConCor I could ask to look up the Roco files and tell you how the cars are grouped. I don't think ConCor would otherwise release that info. eNjoy your weekend Don Brown Tucson AZ

Welcome
Oh, well, thought there would be more interest, but then again the UMTRR started out this way too. Anyway, welcome to the first ten members; you will be able to look back and say you were on the ground floor of the next big thing :-) I will be away for most of the month between vacation and business travel (as you probably already know from my other posts). This group will remain unmoderated, so don't get into any trouble! Cheers, Your Moderator

Question on 2351 2
I have two versions of the A1G 2351 (Pennsy 50ft flat car with 2 Acme trailers). On the 1st version the printing on the trailer inside the circle spells FASTEFREIGHT as pictured on the A1G website. On the 2nd version it is spelled FASTFREIGHT ( no E in the middle). The lettering inside the circle is also different. Is this variation common? Also in the A2G category on the same bdy style. # 3742 Conrail flat with Conrail trailers some have white trailers and some have silver trailers; which is more common?

ADMIN: Tiny print 3
Is anyone else getting the postings back in really small print? I may need to adjust the group's settings. I don't have this problem on any of the other yahoogroups including my UMTRR... --Your moderator

I'm new at this...! 3
Hi all, This is a very interesting subject, but I admit I'm new to it. I love George Irwin's A1G site, but I'd like to find some printed material on the subject also. I can't find the book by Barry Wingard anywhere. Is there another guide to A1G out there somewhere? Perhaps a Greenburg Price Guide of sorts? Thanks for your help! Alan Seamans

243X series B/W cabooses
Hi everybody, The Greenberg guide indicates that there are three colors of the transfer caboose (cat.#2435) of this series; tuscan, red, and yellow. I finally got a red one after months and months of eBaying. Has anybody actually ever seen the other two colors? Thanks, Doug

some A1G finds 2
Hello all! It's me, the new guy. I went to a small train show this weekend and got 5 A1G cars. My prize finds were two 94'"whale belly" tank cars: 3114 GATX and 3112 Texaco! Both with original boxes, no structural defects or missing parts, and fine paint. Each had a price tag of $6 and the seller came up to me and said "Tell you what, how about $10 for the pair of them?" I just about croaked. These are very nice cars. Interesting how they designed those huge double-trucks. One thing I noticed was that on the 3112 Texaco, the small white data on the far right end of the car (blt. date, "Liquified Petroleum Gas Only", AAR test data, etc.)is printed both backwards and upside-down! The 3114 GATX doesn't have these errors. It doesn't detract from the car in my mind, I was just curious if you guys were aware of this "characteristic" and whether it was on all of the 3112's. Just for the record, the other cars were B&O passenger cars 2611 and 2613 and depressed center flatcar 2341 CN (yeah, it didn't have its brakewheel either!) Take care all! Alan S.

Texaco 94' Tanker (was some A1G finds) 2
OK, you guys got me curious so I looked too. Mine is the same way. The other three are hunky-dory. Somebody must have gotten the stamp mounted upside down in the holder for that run (assuming stamp application of course). Doug

94' texico tanker..... 4
Hi all, I sure haven't seen any of those 94' tankers in years but now since I'm on the look out for those A1G finds, I curious to see that car with the upside decal on it. I remember having some of those cars during the late 60's to 70's but I don't recall having that Texico model. I wonder if those decals were put on by hand and not by stamp as more model n-scale models are. Aren't those early Atlas cars neat? I like those just as much as the MT cars. Did anyone remember the A1G car kits that Atlas produced. I put a lot of those kits together and wish I could find some unassembled ones. You'll never know what will turn up at private sales and swapmeets. 2280 Series: Box Cars, 40 Foot Double Door 2
Hi gang, I just obtained my first 2280 series double-door boxcar (2287 I.C.) and I noticed the label calls this a "Machinery Car". Interesting. Are the other cars in this series also labeled as such? Was this a primary use of the prototype? Also, I got a 2252 NYC Cattle Car and I was wondering (assuming it's based on some kind of real car)why the reporting marks were "NISX"? Just curious! Thanks, Alan S.

AHM item no.4454 mechanical reefer
Hi, I'm new to this group. The reason why I subscribed is mainly because I have a lot of old AHM/Atlas/Aurora cars on my NScale layout. For many of them there is no prototype information - which I hope to get from this group. I have several of AHM No.4454 cars, dating from the 60's or maybe 70's. They have outside bracing, with one diagonal brace on each side of the approx. 9' wide plug door. AHM sold them painted&lettered for Thermice, KO&G, REA and NYMX. They don't have express trucks, but normal friction bearing trucks. The item numbers were 4454A,B,C and D. It represents a true mechanical reefer with a diesel engine on one end. The louvers are horizontal, and there is a roofwalk. To date, I have not found a prototype photo of this car. Does someone know what prototype they have (IF there is one?). The closest match I've found are Santa Fe reefers, but they are longer and do not have this type of a plug door. Any help appreciated.... Mike Vienna, Austria

SP bulkhead flat cars...... 3
Hi everyone, I have two questions concerning the A1G, SP,bulkhead flats with log and/or lumber loads. #1. How often if any, has any of theses cars been found for sale? and....... #2. Does anyone have any of these models that they would willing to part with and sell? Prototype photo of an MHAX Helium Car
Hi Guys, Nobody has written for a while so I thought I'd post this note. I just stumbled upon an excellent photo of a real helium car. I thought you all might be interested to see this picture since it looks very similar to the silver MHAX car in the AIG. I found the photo on George Elwood's great railroad photo site. I will post the URL here, and hope you guys can simply click on it. http://gelwood.railfan.net/other/usa/mhax1090alb.jpg I was surprised to see there really is a prototype for this unusual car, even though George Irwin said there was on his site. BTW, George, I am eager for the next installment of your AIG Page. Super job you've done! Best to all of you, Alan S.

Found some A1g cars....... 2
Hi everyone, I finally found some A1G cars this past Saturday. 50' double door boxcar, I.C. Rd#41677.... Bulkhead flatcar (with lumber load, S.P. Rd#5373....Composite gondola, N.S.,Rd#7700 (this goes with the other ones I got during the summer, Monon Rd#2020 and Reading Rd#1800) and the last one I think was the best find #5004-129 40'boxcar P.C.,Rd#65420, still in kit form, all parts on spurs still in it's original Atlas box! I'm about to commit a cardinal sin and I hope everyone here at A1G including Mr. Irwin don't get mad at me for what I'm about to do...change over the trucks to knuckle type??!!!(lol) I know at a collectors stand point that these models should be kept in original form but I collect and operate everything I have so these need to be able to couple up with other equipment on my Pacific NorthWestern Railroad layout. So when I do a truck swap on these cars I will do it with Atlas's accumate truck mounted couplers to keep everything Atlas. I do and will store the original trucks away as those are getting hard to find since everyone has changed over to the plastic wheel sets. If and when I find some more A1G cars, I'll post it here and hope to hear of everyone else's findings here at the A1g group. Rick P.S. You can count on me building that P.C. boxcar kit. I used to enjoy building those as a kid and will sure enjoy doing that again!! Also a note to Mr. Irwin, can the first locomotives that were made for Atlas be concidered A1G? (Roco and Rivarossi) And can these be included with our A1G findings if someone should come across some? _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com/intl.asp

Finally... the cabooses! 2
Well, it's taken... too long... but the two A1G series of cabooses-- or is it cabeese?-- have finally been posted. Ya'll are the first to know; this won't be officially announced until the weekend. So if you'd like to "beta test" have a look! http://www.irwinsjournal.com and then find and select "A1G". Believe it or not, this wraps up the initial posting of all of the A1G freight cars. I have ambitions to go back and change all of the scans to the "pop-up" variety on the pages I put up earlier in this endeavor, and I also have some interesting "one and a halfth generation" stuff like an unassembled car kit that I'd like to share. But there is that unfortunate gap between ambition and achievement... Cheers, Your moderator

Caboose fix
At 11:53 PM 11/29/2001 -0500, you wrote: >George, >I tried the Beta test and failed! When I clicked on the 2340 Bay Window >Caboose I got series 2340 Depressed Center Flat car. The pulldown menu works OK, the menu in the lower pane of the frame (to which Kevin refers) also works correctly now. I transposed the numbers on the link. --Your moderator
