Re: Couple of questions
Max Donoghue
Okay, so I am making some progress.
CAT is wired and working, and RX audio from the radio is getting to the computer and being decoded. I am still not getting any TX tones from the computer into the radio through the DATA jack. The radio keys, but this could be CAT doing that. The computer is putting out the tones, because if I direct the audio to my speakers I hear it just fine. I'm at a loss. |
Re: Couple of questions
开云体育You must have a short somewhere, likely tip to something else.? PTT occurs when the tip of the plug gets pulled toward ground.? If there's nothing on the other end of the cable, then both the cap and resistor will be (should be) unconnected on one end.?Greg? KO6TH Max Donoghue wrote:

Third harmonic problem?
Don't know if every radio ever made has the same 'feature' but...
Tried to contact the ISS during field day Uplink 145.990 FM Downlink came out to around 437.962.3 FM clear receive signal. As soon as I hit TX the receive signal display goes full scale and all incoming audio is blocked out...and in some cases an audible feedback was heard. This was replicated with the radio transmitting into a dummy load with no antenna on the receive side and RF power turned all the way down. it is somewhere around a 20khz range where it feeds back, then drops off to quiet beyond that. We have two radios of similar age and they both do the same thing on that frequency pair. Has anyone else ever noticed this? Is there some setting wrong on our radios? Is there some filter that needs to be replaced? Like I said this was during FD, and other locations were able to contact the ISS with apparently no problem...we didn't have this issue on any other satellite- FM or Transponder. Mike KF5DEY |

I just picked up an FT-847 and FC-20 that appear brand new. Radio and tuner both did well in recent Field Day. 73, Bill, W9MXQ? |
Re: Couple of questions
开云体育What Tom said.? It's the way many HTs are keyed as well.I built a cable harness roughly similar to what Ian described, hooking it to a Raspberry Pi 4B with a USB audio dongle.? The PTT side of things is kind of a mess, with some apps allowing the use of the GPIO pins and some forcing the use of a serial port DTR / RTS modem lines, which of course have the wrong polarity.? So it's a couple of switches and an inverter chip to let everything be plugged in at once.? I also have a 736R, so the switches also control which rig the lot hooks to.? In hindsight, I think I would stick with the modem lines control, and not use the otherwise-convenient GPIO pins.? I think the modem interface is universally available among the apps (Direwolf, WSJT-X, FLDIGI, JS8Call, QSSTV), where only a few can do GPIO.? The problem with the Mike input is one of inconvenient cabling, and the sensitivity to the setting of the mike level control.? The jacks in the back of the rig are fixed volume, so you can configure the software once, and then just use it with no tweaking needed.? Audio out goes everywhere; it's just the audio in that has the problem. Greg KO6TH K6EU wrote:

Re: Couple of questions
Max Donoghue
Hi Ian, Yes I see in the manual now you have to use a blocking capacitor on the TX audio line. That should be easy enough to do.? Coming from a Kenwood TS-850S, I owned?a couple of FT-990's and a Mark V Field, but it's been a while since I've operated a Yaesu. Great to be able to get back into 6m and 2m SSB as well as the satellites again. |
Re: Couple of questions
Hi Max From what I remember? if you ground the?audio out (the?tip) this then enables PTT on the data port.? If I am wrong?anyone please feel free to correct me I hope you have great fun with your FT-847 73 de Ian G8ZHC On Wed, 6 Jul 2022, 16:45 Max Donoghue, <ve3tmt@...> wrote:

Re: Couple of questions
Hi Gerald,
The CPU on the AF-CNTL board must be replaced.? Some service-centers got them from YAESU and did replacement on warranty back then. I got my CPU from UK and as I recall the cost was about 30$. The replacement must be done by a professional but is not difficult. Check with your local Yaesu if they can give advise. Othervise you could ask my supplier. Get in touch! Nils SM7DVO |
Re: Couple of questions
开云体育Good morning guys, I got may radio when it was first introduced and never found out about the update to it. Does anyone know who or if the digital upgrade part is still available and is it worth it? I have done packet with this radio in the past, but gave up on that as it appears to be a dead platform. Thanks in advance Gerry Klotz On Jul 6, 2022, at 10:30 AM, Greg D <ko6th.greg@...> wrote:

Re: Couple of questions
One page 16 of my manual in the section re "AFSK TNC Connections".? Check the diagram showing a 10uf cap and 2K ohm resistor connected to the AFSK TNC. Easy to build your own if you can obtain the components.? 73, Tom K6EU On Wed, Jul 6, 2022 at 8:45 AM Max Donoghue <ve3tmt@...> wrote:
