Looks about the same as what I have...

Ah in that case, buy one of the those small software defined Spectrum analysers, and a few SMA adapters so you can put a scoop probe on it! Look at the single input on the VHF side the UHF will or should be a similar level!

I don't have a lot of test gear. Multimeter, small portable scope from Amazon and a NanoVNA.

Thank you Andrew, will do.

RX on the UHF band is fine. It's just the TX that has failed.?

Hi Andrew,

VHF is fine. I'm in Kingston, Ontario.

Hi Andy,

I touched up the both the PCB and the module solder connections. I may just go in and start inspecting solder contacts to make sure everything is good. Voltages would help but I do have the hi-res schematics to get me started.

Re: Schematics?

Howdo. When you say you resoldered the leads, was that the leads on to PCB, or taking the top off the module and resoldering internally?

I had a problem with a VHF PA that turned out to be a bad solder connection on an inductor. DC one side of inductor leg one side of PCB, but not the other. It was a bad connection to copper.?

Hi I have high resolution schematics where do you live.

Does VHF tx work?

Looking for a good set of schematics with voltage references. My 847 has no output on UHF band, known to me when I purchased it. I'm aware of the issue with the leads on the UHF module losing contact, but I checked that and resoldered just to be sure but did not resolve the problem. Time to start looking elsewhere.?

All suggestions on what to check next are welcome.
Thank you
Max

You would be better to wrap the crystal in some foam, as it sits in the air stream from fan.

Re: Couple of questions

Any external speaker should sound better than the internal speaker. In the old days radios were designed with large speakers pointing forwards towards the users earholes. Nowadays they fit tiny speakers anywhere they can. Or is that just a ploy to get owners to buy? overpriced extension speakers.
I use a bookshelf speaker, that is around the same size as 847, it was one of two off Ebay at ?25 the pair.?
If I was really worried, I would put a Yaesu sticker on it.

Up first is the volume control mod, not the resistor one. That is annoying not being able to turn the volume down to a comfortable level :(

Re: Couple of questions

Hi Greg,

Simple homebrew keying circuit using an optocoupler. One for the PTT and one for CW. I think I've got the CW side solved (was using a mono plug on the 850, but have to use a stereo plug on the 847). I'll work on the PTT circuit tomorrow.

Re: Couple of questions

The TRS Data jack (vs the DIN one) combines the PTT and audio in (for transmitting) on the Tip of that TRS plug.? You need a 2k-ish resistor between the tip and the PTT line, and a DC blocking capacitor (a couple of uf) between the tip and your audio source.? The PTT signal can come from a variety of places.? Assuming you are using a sound card TNC (Direwolf, AGWPE, UZ7HO, et al), most use the serial port "modem lines" (DTR, RTS), with an appropriate buffer circuit.? That can be as simple as a transistor and resistor in an "open collector" circuit configuration.? The PTT is an active-low, so driving the transistor on with the modem line going high will do it, but be sure that the software configuration uses the modem lines in the right manner.? Some are active the wrong way, which kind of makes a mess of things.

Actually I should back up and first ask what you are using for the TNC, and what sort of interface you are using between it and the rig.? Is it just a custom cable between the computer and radio, or are you using something like a RigBlaster?? The circuit above is likely already built into the RigBlaster if that's what you are using.
