One page 16 of my manual in the section re "AFSK TNC Connections".? Check the diagram showing a 10uf cap and 2K ohm resistor connected to the AFSK TNC.
Easy to build your own if you can obtain the components.?

Congrats on the new rig!? Great radio, but it has it's quirks.?
You've run into my #1 peeve.
There are two jacks on the back for interfacing with digital stuff.?
The DIN port is for VHF/UHF packet, and the TRS is for the HF
modes.? So if you have a single computer doing both with a sound
card, it will take some careful wiring with appropriate use of DC
blocking capacitors.? The issue is that the PTT functions for the
two are separate, and the radio is trying to be smart and only takes
audio from whichever port is being keyed.? And just to complicate
things further, the PTT on DIN is a single purpose pin, while PTT is
combined with the mike audio on the TRS.? To be fair, when the radio
was created, packet and HF modes were typically built into separate
boxes, and so I presume they were trying to make things easier for
us.? In the end, it turned out rather different.
Final warning, the CAT interface works well if you have the newer
version of the radio (do a search for the S/N boundary), but for
some reason I can't fathom, keying the rig with CAT takes audio from
the front mike connector.? That's the last place I'd expect audio to
be coming from if I key the radio from a computer.? You really need
to use the various PTT lines instead, as using the mike input in
order to use CAT has its own issues with setting the audio level.

Regarding using data on the FT-847 its?a little bit complicated compared to more modern transceivers. As a rule of thumb you use the Packet port for FM based operation and the Data In/Out for AM/SSB
For the past 20 years I have used this home built interface based on the following which I think credit to VA3DH who came up with the design originally?for W95SSTV?software, on several FT-847's which gives all mode data :
In improving the PTT switching and?making electrically isolated totally radio from?computer you could adapt and use a 4N25 optocoupler in?place of the switching transistor.?

Out of band mod?? I wasn't aware that there were any such mods for
the radio (e.g. to get it to Tx on the WARC bands)...

You can use the sub on the same band. You have to use split a/b vfo.? Satpc32 help file explains what to do for ISS etc.?

Try wide banding it then a reset, failing that? as these radios are rather old, so perform an alignment, this should sort it out.

Field Day really brings out the problems. I have 2 FT-847's. One belongs to the Club which I cloned to be the same as mine. For the ISS V/v frequencies, both do the same thing. Main vfo shows 145.850, sub vfo shows 144.490. Press the PTT and the sub vfo shows error on both rigs. All the other sat pairs are fine. I have an 847 that I use almost exclusively for VHF/UHF week signal work and for satellites but it got pressed into service for our local club's Field Day this last weekend.
It performed perfectly on 10, 15, 20, and 40 but when trying to transmit on 80 meters the display reads "ERROR". This happens whether the radio is set for CW, SSB, AM or FM and it doesn't seem to matter is PTT is asserted via the DATA IN or PKT connectors, the footswitch connector, or the front panel mic connector. Again, only 80m is effected.?

Re: Using FT-847 as an oscillator for practice
Just to put my two pennies worth in!
? What key will you be using? Iambic, swipe or straight? If you going to use a DL then I like to use a 600hz side tone (menu 6) as it always felt nicer on the ear, just my preference. Find the monitor setting on the FT847 and use that to adjust your output volume (mine is at 25, side tone menu 8). Set the weight to something that resembles clear dashes and not long ones (maybe worth consulting the “fists” on that) but mines at 3.0 (menu 7). Adjust the delay..... that I would say is quite important. Longer the better for practice as you won’t be interested in QSK break in while practicing and I think 300ms is the longest the rig allows. When driving an transistorised amplifier I find the delay at 300ms still too short as I’m not really expecting break in and I’m not exactly fast so find the carrier dropping in and out in between sentences (menu 9 maximum 300ms). Im sure people will say the opposite and use 10ms as it doesn’t drive the PA as hard but at 5w into a DL I would rather not switch so often and I guess it’s driving my VL1000 and hearing the chattering relays..... sends a shiver down my spine..Naturally you have the speed on the front panel so adjust accordingly.
? Also don’t forget to use the monitor button on the front panel above RF/AF or you won’t hear your side tone and process/keyer button next to it or you won’t have control over the speed and automatic dots and dashes. I use an Iambic key (Kent) and the keyer button give me automatically generated dots and dashes..... lazy I know. Won’t make a difference on a straight key.
