FT-60 Commander Alternate Write Mode 9
Pretty much everyone who uses FT-60 Commander knows that the "Alternate Write Mode" is often needed to successfully write to the FT-60. Does anyone know what that magical setting actually does? I'm trying to get Chirp working, and I can read, but not write. This seems to be a common issue with Chirp and the FT-60, and I feel like it is perhaps a flow control issue or something like that. I also think that the Alternate Write Method in Commander was there specifically to address that, but without knowing what it actually does, that is just speculation. Any input would be appreciated! 73, Matt, N0EYE

AA NiMH batteries, input on brands 20
Hello all, I ran across some AA NiMH batteries made by Tenergy, I have never heard of the brand personally and was wondering if anyone here has used them before. For the most part I have found positive reviews, still I'm curious. Here is a link to the particular ones I found: https://power.tenergy.com/tenergy-aa-2000mah-nimh-flat-top-rechargeable-battery/ The price of these batteries are economical but most of the times you get what you pay for. What brands of AA NiMH batteries has everyone here used with the FBA-25 battery case? The good, the bad, the ugly. LOL One more thing, I read some reviews on the Amazon Basics NiMH batteries where the purchaser peeled the Amazon branded sleeve off of the battery, to find that they were Panasonic branded batteries. One reviewer did the same, to find that they were Samsung batteries. I know it's common for companies to rebrand products for resale under their company name. Again just curious if anyone here has read of this or has first hand knowledge. Quite a few reviews stated that the batteries tested and performed as well as Eneloops, and Powerx AA NiMH batteries. Can anyone validate that claim? Thanks in advance to everyone. Mike Owens -- W5SKK

FT-60R and Headsets/microphones/speaker mikes etc 5
Shortly after buying the first FT-60R, I purchased a headset with integral boom mike. A popular 3rd party headset/mike and optional hand switch was selected using the manufacturer's guide for various handheld products. The almost instant wart was the connection with the handheld. While it seemed to insert ok, any mechanical force, lateral or pulling resulted in the connector popping partially out. This invariably resulted in continuous keying of the radio and providing potential transmission of comments or other sounds one rather not share. Later I thought a speaker mike, might be a better solution as it was less obvious to eager law enforcement officers on a rampage to enforce the new cellular use bans. Again lower cost 3rd party products were surveyed and this time note of the connector seating was a hot item of focus. I did not find any 3rd party products that did not suffer the same malady of the high dollar headset purchased previously. Later I examined a Yaesu OEM speaker mike combo and upon inserting the connector the noticeable difference was the Yaesu molded connector seemed to enter easier than earlier products tried, and there was also a distinctive audible and tactile click. I purchased the Yaesu brand speaker mike. Three things where obvious when comparing the 3rd party products to the Yaesu OEM item. First was that although the Yaesu speaker mike could be pulled out, it was much more resistant to pullout due to applied torque of the cable movement. 3rd party products alternatively seemed like they were a hair triggered devices waiting to pop out. Another simple item was Yaesu's included plastic ring that fit around the rubber duck antenna base with integral clip to hold the speaker mike cable upright on the side of the handheld. That blocked a lot of the forces of the cable movement from reaching the speaker mike connector. Lastly when comparing the connectors on the third party headset and speaker mikes to the Yaesu OEM speaker mike connector, the length of the metal portion of the connector on the Yaesu product was noticeably longer. Not more than maybe a 1/32 to 1/16 of an inch or so but it allowed the connector to engage the radio's connector and produce an audible and tactile feedback from the type one finds with bigger brother 1/4 inch phone jacks when they correctly mate. It may be a nutinburger but I have been more satisfied using the Yaesu OEM accessories than 3rd party products. Chuck

My FT-60 problems 13
First of all, where do I direct these problems at Yaesu? FT-60 frustrations: (I have two of them for NWS Skywarn use) The furnished short antenna has what local Hams call "negative gain". It is sad that we need to spend even more money on aftermarket antennas to reach local repeaters or simplex. As I can physically see my local repeater antenna, not being able to hit it is frustrating. Batteries need to be upgraded to LiFePo if possible. The charge levels are dying with the NiMH and the price is higher than other radio models and brands. I have tried three different Yaesu brand headsets and the plugs do not stay in place or maintain connection. Some of the events where I volunteer required some kind of headset or earpiece, and the radio connection does not stay in place. I have seen several comments to that effect from other reviewers. The channel selection shifts on its own. A great case, a very heavy radio, and mediocre electronics.

Battery or radio 7
My FT-60 is about 10 years old. It was getting time to replace the battery again. I ordered a battery from Big Time Battery Electronics for around $20,00. (https://www.bigtimebattery.com/) I knew, from the price, that this was a cheaper price for a battery of this type. However, when you are on a fixed income, anything priced lower is worth a try. Big mistake on my part. The battery arrived and I installed it into my radio. The voltage read 7.5 volts, so I decided to charged it. After about 6 hours, it still read 7.5. volts. I turned it on and just ran the scanner and did not transmit any. I ran it down to about 6.3 volts. I again charged it and it ran back to 7.5 volts. This time, it only took a couple of hours and was down to 5.5. volts . I called the company and they said they would send me another battery. I about a week, the batter arrived. Same thing, 7.5 volts. I transmitted into a repeater to get a radio check. I then turned the radio off and back on. The voltage read 6.3 . I put it back on the charger and now it won¡¯t get any higher than 6.7 volts. Before I call the company and complain again, I thought I would ask the group, if this could be problem with my radio. It reads fine when I hook it up to my chargers and I can transmit while using my auto jump box. This tells me the radio is OK, but I still think I need to ask the group. Any response would be appreciated. Mt thanks in advance. Ron ¨C W8HBF

Battery FNB-83 Different voltage readings 15
When I charged my 60r to full, I took my vom and measured the voltages at the 3 gold colored contacts on the back of the FNB-83 battery, it is 7.49 I removed the battery and checked the voltage at the 2 (+ & - ) silver colored tabs that connect to the 60r and get a 8.6v reading. When battery is inserted in the 60r I get a 8.6 voltage reading in the display when I turn it on. Is there a reason for the voltage difference?

Can't get FT 60R to scan all 5 bands 4
As per instructions I started in VFO>Band>P>All> waited for the P to stop flashing, pushed up arrow & then tried down arrow, same thing, it will not scan all 5 bands. Only one at a time. Do I need to do any thing after the flashing P is set to ALL?

Can't delete memories/ any suggestions 11
I have had no luck with the instructions on page 32 of the FT-60 manual for deleting memories. I have tried clearing all the memories and resetting to factory defaults. But this doesn¡¯t fix the problem. I am still unable to delete selected memories, one at a time. Any suggestions?

VAC-370 Fast Charger for sale 2
This charger is surplus to my needs as I have converted my FT-60R's NiMH pack to Li-ion. This is the charger that came with my radio. The base is marked "CD-29" and "VAC-370". The wall transformer (heavy; not a switcher) is marked "PA-23B". $25 USD plus postage from Point Roberts, WA or Vancouver, BC. Contact me using "Private" mode if interested. I'll post to this thread again once it's gone. Cheers, Halden VE7UTS

I have not used my FT-60 for awhile. The battery was 6.8, I charged it. It now is 7.4 When I push the PTT the radio turns off and then turns back on. Has anyone had this happen? What is the fix to this problem? I used the RT System programming software with their cable USB-57A Thanks in advance for any help. 73 Charles KD8JZR

CD47 charger 9
I just purchased an cd-47 charger which has 3 contacts and will charge my current Li-ion battery which also has 3 contacts. However, all new Li-ion batteries show 4 contacts! Will these newer batteries properly charge in my 3 contact charger? Or do I have to find a cd47 with 4 contacts? Currently I have no working NiMH batteries for my ft60. Thanks Rudi wa2nub

Like New FT-60 for sale 9
Hi, I have three of these radios (the FT-60 has long been my favorite HT). One is my "daily walker", I'm keeping it. The other two are back-ups I bought so that if one failed or I lost it, I'd always have another. Decided that two back-ups are really a luxury I don't need right now and want to sell one (and only one). All 3 radios were bought in Dec 2020 (after wifey passed away I went bonkers and bought way more radio gear than I needed). The spares have lived their entire life in my "go box" and never been used outside of charging, programming and an occasional test to make sure they still work. It will come with all factory accessories (drop in charger, antenna etc) and the factory box. LIKE NEW. Asking $120, includes shipping to the USA (Postal Money Order please, I don't do PayPal). -- <>< 73 From "The Beaconeer's Lair" ><> Specializing in DXing NDBs (Longwave Beacons) Phil, KO6BB, http://www.qsl.net/ko6bb/ RADIOS: YAESU: FTDX-101MP Xceiver, Dual SDR Receivers (~2020) YAESU: FTDX-3000 Xceiver, DSP IF, 300Hz Roofing filter (~2019). Making 3D printed battery case for FT-60R 23
The original OEM battery for FT-60 is NiMH chemistry, rated 7.2V nom, and involves 6 x 1.2V cells. Today we get Lithium cells type 18650, rated 3.6V nominal and it should be possible to power the FT-60R with two Lithium cells to get the same voltage level as the original OEM battery. I know this change is not just replacing the cells as it requires extras like a BMS board and possibly a new/different charger to suit. The original wall-wart may not work. I wonder if anyone has tried making a case that can hold two 18650 cells using a 3D printer. Any thoughts or leads? Thanks Prasad AB3EH

Smart search feature question 9
Ok so recently I¡¯ve discovered the Smart Search feature. Easy to operate and I understand how the channels are saved. But my question is. After the radio preforms the smart search feature and collects what active frequencies it finds. For some reason I¡¯m unable to talk on them when I key down. I¡¯ve specifically tested to a local repeater and it does save it. Saves proper input and output frequencies. I hear traffic but when I key down it won¡¯t open the repeater? What am I doing wrong? Is it something to do with the PL Tone? Does Smart Search not save that? Do I have to manually attempt to find the PL tone if I don¡¯t know it and manually input the repeater? What¡¯s the trick? Smart Search is a cool feature especially for travel. Thanks Matt

FT-60R Main Board 17
Hello, My FT-60R's monitor button stopped working, so I couldn't get into the settings menu. I took it to Yaesu for repairs, and they came back saying that I need a new main board due to water damage, and that replacement cost is about $240+ Does anyone have a board for sale, or know where I can get one reasonably cheap keeping in mind that the price of a brand new radio is: $155.00? Thank you - Samer

No TX at low voltage 35
Hi, I barely use my FT-60. It has been there for past 5 years, but used maybe 2 hours in total. I charged it full 2 weeks ago. I took it out yesterday and to my surprise, I could not hear its audio from another radio. I thought its mic is bad. I could be wrong, but I remember it was over 7V. However, when I charge it full, it is working fine. I can hear it clearly from another radio. I have 3 questions. 1) its battery spec is 7.4 V. why it is 8.2V when I fully charge it? 2) I charged it to 8.2 v this morning, and it is now 7.6 V after half day. Is this normal? 3) I am still waiting its battery voltage drop and repeat my test yesterday. Does it happen to you that TX is very weak at 7V? Thanks. John
