problem FT-60

I have not used my FT-60 for awhile. The battery was 6.8, I charged it. It now is 7.4
When I push the PTT the radio turns off and then turns back on. Has anyone had this happen? What is the fix to this problem? I used the RT System programming software with their cable USB-57A
Thanks in advance for any help.

Hi Charles,
I had the same problem. It was the battery. It sounds like you need a new one.

Classic case of a bad cell in the battery pack. About the only fix is
to buy a replacement pack. The case halves are welded together
using ultrasonics ans few people have the needed spot welder to
attach a replacement cell and ultrasonic welder to reattach the case
halves when split.

I want to echo Chuck's response except to add that it's not impossible but very difficult to replace the bad cell. Among the many problems are those that Chuck mentioned in that the ultrasonic welding is so perfect in achieving what appears to be a single piece of plastic out of two halves.
Maybe try:
1) carefully cut the case in two with great care so as to keep an even bonding line when the time comes to rejoining them
2) determine which cell is bad and remove it. To get a replacement that works satisfactorily one needs to determine cell characteristics such as capacity and a dozen other cell characteristics that went into the OEM cell selection.
3) spot weld the cell into the series string being careful not to overheat the cell case. This requires a reasonably good cell spot welder and considerable practice. The new connector ribbon must be long enough but not too long or you can't reassemble the cell stack so the plastic case will properly fit and can be welded together. Test the pack prior to re-assembly.
4) Re-bond the two case halves together using plastic welding, super glue, or any of a number of bonding techniques that create a thin bond line.
5) After you did all that and the battery case won't fit the original FT60, go out and buy a new battery pack and enjoy your radio.
They are really one on the best radios around and it's hard to improve on Yaesu's original design or construction. How do I know all this? I did this as an exercise to assess how much trouble it would be and found it was really a lot of trouble getting everything just right. It's really a kind of fool's errand and, to me, the cost far exceeds the benefit.

In the interim, before you get a new battery, you might try setting your transmit power to medium or low.

Symptoms of a low battery condition. How are you charging the battery? And how old is the battery?

I want to thank Karl, Jardy, Chuck, Will, Pat, Clint and RJW for replying to my question about the FT-60

I went to R&L and bought a new battery. It indeed fixed the problem.

Thanks everyone again for your help.

Have a Happy Thanksgiving.

We who live near radio retailers are lucky.?Having goodies shipped to me is quick and convenient but is missing just a little bit of the magic.

I’ve been able to “go to” HRO in San Diego, Atlanta very easily and now—less easily but still in range—Delaware. I bought my FT-60R (and a spare battery ?) at New Castle. We have to pass New Castle twice on every trip to visit family in Rehoboth Beach.

Happy radio. Happy?Thanksgiving.
