AA NiMH batteries, input on brands

Hello all,

I ran across some AA NiMH batteries made by Tenergy, I have never heard of the brand personally and was wondering if anyone here has used them before.? For the most part I have found positive reviews, still I'm curious.

Here is a link to the particular ones I found:

The price of these batteries are economical but most of the times you get what you pay for.

What brands of AA NiMH batteries has everyone here used with the FBA-25 battery case?? The good, the bad, the ugly. LOL

One more thing, I read some reviews on the Amazon Basics NiMH batteries where the purchaser peeled the Amazon branded sleeve off of the battery, to find that they were Panasonic branded batteries.? One reviewer did the same, to find that they were Samsung batteries.? I know it's common for companies to rebrand products for resale under their company name.? Again just curious if anyone here has read of this or has first hand knowledge.?
Quite a few reviews stated that the batteries tested and performed as well as Eneloops, and Powerx AA NiMH batteries.? Can anyone validate that claim?

Thanks in advance to everyone.

As a data point I've used this brand in AAA size and they work great in some pretty harsh conditions.

I have Ikea LADDA 1900mAh AA's in my FBA-25, these are basically Enerloops. I haven't tried the 2450mAh versions as I read somewhere they are too large and won't fit.

I've had such good service from Eneloop, that I've never tried anything else. Would be good to learn what other's have experienced from other brands.

John,

I would have to say Eneloop is the most recommended from the research I've done so far. ?

Thanks for commenting, it's much appreciated.

Dale,

Thanks for replying. I have ran across positive reviews and comments on the LADDA batteries, here and there.? Are you getting a good charge/discharge life from them??

Gary,

Great to know!? Were the flat top style like the one in the link or the button top?

They were button top.

Maha / Powerwerx - charging in a Maha charger.

Hi Mike,
I've bought Tenergy Li-ion cells and measured their capacity to be close to the claimed capacity.? I've had reasonable success with EBL NiMh cells, but the AAAs I bought were far short of their capacity claims at medium discharge rates.? It's hard to dispute the NiMH capacity claims because the manufacturer does not associate a discharge rate with the claims, and the capacity is very dependent on the rate.? For Li-ion and LiFePO4, the capacity is not so rate-dependent.? I suggest you buy a set, measure the capacity, and return to seller if you find that the capacity is far short of the claim.
Cheers

I use?in the battery holder. There is a 2450mAh version but these tend to have higher self discharge rate.

I have also successfully rebuilt one of the original Yaesu battery packs with 1900mA Ikea Ladda's. It charges well in SBH-13 desktop charger.

Clint,

Somehow I knew you were going to suggest Powerwerx. ; )?

I've seen you recommend them in other threads and on social media platforms before.? Question though.? Did you try out other brands before the Powerwerx batteries or did you pick that particular brand based on research and have stuck with them through the years?

I don't doubt the quality and reliability, as they usually rank within the top 5 from research I've gathered.? I am guilty of analysis paralysis at times, I like comparing specs, looking at the numbers and hearing first hand testimonials.

Mike

Peter,

One of the original Yaesu packs I have is partially opened by the previous owner, it has a bad cell in it.? I have been thinking about attempting to replace the cells myself but without a proper way to solder the tabs, I am pretty reluctant in trying.

I'd like to know your process? for rebuilding the pack.

Mike

I recommend Powerwerx because I know them, they are hams, they provide excellent products and support …

When I found 2700mAH MiMH cells that were reliable, it was cool to be able to state, “Darned near TWICE the?
1400 mAH capacity of the stock FT-60R battery … “ - followed by my spiel of again doubling battery life by acquiring?
a good aftermarket antenna and turning down TX power to 2W - QUADRUPLING battery life …

I use a Maha individual-cell intelligent charger. A couple different ones, actually. They have served me well for?
MANY years. So, yep ?- I haven’t looked elsewhere, because I have found NiMH Nirvana.

OH - And i am majority stockholder in Powerwerx.(1)

Mike,
I used don't have an access to spot welder so had to carefully solder the cells together with a piece of wire. I kept all the internals like the fuse and diodes for sensing the cell temperature during charging. In general, it is not recommend to directly solder the cells which I fully agree. However, if one works fast with a low melting point solder this can be done.

Hi Mike,
My original pack also had 1 bad cell in it.? Maybe 2.? I took them all out and disposed of the bad cells.? Of the remaining cells, I pulled the tabs off the (-) terminals, folded the tab back and forth on the (+) terminals and applied a blob of solder there to form something resembling a button.? These are now in domestic service for various toys, holiday lights, etc.? Then I put 2 Li-ion flat cells into the original case (details posted in this forum).? The pack is now lighter than before and has more capacity.
Cheers

Thanks for the input everyone, it is much appreciated.? I like to have firsthand knowledge of products from people that have used them versus reviews on websites.? Not that the reviews aren't truthful but using a NiMH cell in a tv remote doesn't give a full picture of it's performance for this application.

Again, all of the input has been very helpful.
