Will new antenna fit ok
Well, I ordered it & then saw it came with a o-ring. Will be Thursday. Just thought I would ask.

Gary,
I have a Nagoya NA-761 and a Comet MH-255 that was included with one of the FT-60s I traded for.? With either antenna attached to the FT-60, there is a noticeable gap between the base of the antenna and radio of about 1/8 inch.? The o-ring that was supplied for some of the antennas I have bought don't fill the gap completely.? I don't know the dimensions of the o-ring that is supplied with the Diamond antenna but I would guess it won't completely fill the gap.? This is just a guess on my part. Most of the o-rings sit on top of the nut of the sma connector on the FT-60.? If the o-ring that is supplied fits properly, sure why not use it, if there is a noticeable gap. I have seen some .stl files out on the interwebs for a 3-D printed ring that fills that gap perfectly.? If my memory serves me, someone on Etsy is selling one for 5 or 6 bucks.? Also, SignalStuff sells one on their website also. 73 Mike/W5SKK |
My SRH77CA is a few years old, as is my FT-60R. The antenna did not come with an O-ring and mates nicely to my HT without it. With the?antenna in place, I can barely see the retaining nut that holds the SMA female on the HT. Unless physical dimensions have changed, my guess is that the O-ring isn't required, but it *might* be intended to keep the SMA connector from unscrewing. That's a problem I haven't had. |
Thanks Mike, as long as it holds the antenna securely, if not then I might be able to rig something up, or contact Esty.
I just hopes this antenna is an improvement over the stock antenna, having problems hitting repeaters on 2 & 70cm. If not I will return the antenna & sell the ft60. Can't put up any sort of other antenna. |
开云体育Have you considered an Ed Fong twin lead dual-band j-pole?? AA3T

My apologies. The Diamond antenna IS superior in both directions. I momentarily thought we were discussing performance with versus without the O-ring. Buy and use the Diamond with confidence. On Tue, Dec 13, 2022 at 19:16 Philip Milazzo <philip.milazzo@...> wrote:

Phil, I have been off the air for 20 years or so and picked up this ft60-r nice radio, but I live in a low elevation area & was trying to get by with the stock whip. hopefully the whip from diamond will do the trick. I know a something like a j-pole would be a great improvement, but with a HT I don't want coax hanging from the antenna connector. Any whip over 15" would also be impracticable for me.If the Diamond doesn't get it, then I am going to just sell the 60

I live in a 2 story condo.? I can't ping the usual repeater I use from inside, even with a Diamond SRH77CA antenna.? But if I walk outside, I can reach it from there. (Similarly, have a Diamond X50 in the attic, when I connect to it with the FT60, no problems reaching it with 5W.)
I know of a different ham that is much closer, but can't reach the same repeater from inside the house with just an attached HT antenna.? She uses a simple mag-mount antenna inside, attached to a steel cookie sheet as a ground plane, and gets through just fine that way from inside.? She also has a short, flexible coax jumper cable running from the HT to the magmount connector, which removes the stress from the HT connector. |
开云体育G'day,
I use a Comet SMA 24 and a counterpoise/tiger tail of 19 inch on my FT60.
Very efficient radiator. Great radio.

Thank You Bob, very helpful. Got a feeling I am going to need a set up like you ham friend. SRH&&CA will be here tomorrow. I will try it out, if it doesn't work out I can just send it back to amazon from a local store that takes amazon returns.
Glad your set up is working good for you. 73 Gary KY8M |
开云体育If you are not making it at all with the stock antenna, chances are a 15-17” antenna?won’t do it for you, either. Has NOTHING to do with the quality of the Yaesu FT-60R. Please describe the terrain between you and the repeaters you are interested in hitting. Is it?“line of sight” - where there is nothing between your antenna and the other antenna to obstruct? Clint, terrain is a big problem. I am at a low elevation, there are a few repeaters on 2m/440m I can hit, but I come in scratchy. What I really need is something like a 5/8 mag-mount in my attic, but I have a few physical limitations preventing me from getting up there. Also not sure how to get the coax from the attic to the basement.
I looked in the basement for a gap in the soil pipe to see if coax would fit along side of it, but there is no room. Don't have anyone near by to help. Can't put anything out side. I'll probably end up looking up there myself the best I can, and see what I can come up with. 73 Gary |
