Newbie asking advice on programming, batteries & headset
23
I'm a new HAM and getting ready to purchase an FT-60R and I'm glad to have found this group. I'm looking for advice in three areas: 1 - programming software, 2 - batteries and 3 - speaker/mic vs. headset 1 - Regarding programming software, am I better off going without any entirely, using the free CHIRPS or using RTS Systems and why? Because this is all new to me, I'm not sure what all I will want to program other than the local repeaters and channels plus I'm planning to join the ARES group and will likely need to add in info for specific events that I work. 2 - Regarding batteries, I have read that turning the volume and transmit power down helps prolong battery life. I'm hoping for recommendations on specifically which extra batteries to get and any associated charger needed for same. I would like to have a way to use the radio in the event of a power-outage emergency/disaster. I could use specifics here, like part #s of the recommendations as I'm not too confident I'll get the right ones otherwise. 3 - I'm wanting to be able to be hands-free when using the HT. I've been thinking about getting the headset that comes with a mic (SSM-63A) but not having seen one in person, I'm not sure how it works when you want to transmit (i.e. is there a button to push?). I would also consider a speaker-mic that I could have up on my collar (not sure what is needed to attach to collar) but I feel that the headset would be nicer to have if it's not too cumbersome to PTT, especially if I'm at a noisy event where something in/over my ear may help to block out other sounds. I know I am asking for a lot all at once and I appreciate the help from those of you with more knowledge and experience than I.

A few of my groups are migrating from yahoo to groups.io. Just curious, is yahoo abandoning their groups or is this just a better 'experience'? Thanks, Fred Jacobowitz

USB Driver

I purchased a usb cable from someone at a hamfest. Well it worked great. The problem is the CD driver broke into and the CD Rom wont read the disc. It says its a Prolific USB cable under hardware control. Any one having a idea what driver I need please let me know. I have 3 computers, XP,Windows 7 and WAindows 10. Thanks in advance 73 Dave NU4N

program. -- I truly believed that would work, until I tried it.
I'm sorry, but the documentation suffers, at times, from being opaque. I tried step-by-step, but lots of the steps are not adjacent to each other. And keys that are supposed to do one thing seem to do something else.

CHIRP difficulties with loading a code plug into an FT60R
11
I checked the previous messages (perfunctorily) and did not see a direct answer to this question so my apologies for any repetition. In attempting to modify a code plug (add frequencies) to my FT60R, I thought I'd give Chirp a whirl. It read the data from the radio accurately and without incident. However, when I attempted to write the data back out to the radio, the dialog comes up with the vendor and model edit boxes disabled. Any suggestions or ideas? Thanks in advance! -- William, K6WHP "Cheer up, things could get worse..so I cheered up and, sure enough, things got worse!"

Availability in Europe (2019) ?
7
The fact is that for almost a year the now the FT-60E is not available anywhere in Europe. Even the largest shops (Wimo, WSPLC, Martyn&Lynch) do not carry it and neither do they offer the option to backorder. So Yaesu is not supplying it to the whole European market. Do we know if there are new units produced or the ones in circulation are older stock ? I agree that FT-65 is a disappointment when seen as a FT-60 replacement. This new range of handheld transceivers(FT-65, FT-25, FT-4X, FT-4V) is a quick way to stop people turning to Chinese cheap alternatives. Nothing more. Nothing to be proud of in terms of new technology or innovation. So, I guess the situation remains...no way to purchase the FT-60, NEW in Europe. Pitty.

How ¡®Bout the FT-65?
15
Just talked to a fellow ham who was considering the Yaesu FT-65 HT. I mean, a radio labelled "65" must be better than a "60," right? Not necessarily. The FT-60R has 1,000 memories. The '65 - about 800 less. The FT-60R receives - essentially - 108-to-a-gig. The '65 receives 136-174 and 400-480. The included battery pack with the FT-60R - properly charged - will provide about 1,000 discharge-charge cycles. The pack with the '65? About 300. In reading the two manuals for the FT-65, they describe unusual splits within the same band - but not the capability to program 2M / 440 split in a memory for working the voice FM satellites. The FT-60R has the optional FBA-25 AA alkaline case. Populate it with AA alkalines or AA NiMH cells, and you have full TX power available. No such accessory s available from Yaesu for the FT-65. BUT - The FT-65 had an LED flashlight! It will blink our "S O S" for you, too! And the '65 receives the commercial FM broadcast band ... The FT-65 is about $120. The FR-60R $136-155. -- Clint Bradford K6LCS http//www.work-sat.com

How ?€?Bout the FT-65 ?
A salesman at redacted advised me to skip over the 65 and get another 60, or wait for the RT-70DR. Not all progress is forward. I think the FT-65 is a price-point radio that came out to be closer in price to the various Baofeng, Wouxon, Puxing, etc. offerings. As you imply, the accessories are not compatible with the FT-60 (and earlier models) accessories. The FT-70DR adds the Yaesu digital mode, but even if you just use it for analog FM, I think you would be happier than with the FT-65. Some of the FT-60 accessories do work with it I would still be inclined to the FT-60 of the 3. Check the eHam.net reviews. Gary N1ZCE -------------------------------------------------------- Gary D. FT-60 batteries
23
I have three batteries, all genuine Yaesu FNB-83, 7.2 v 1400 mAh. I charge them with a Yaesu CD-47 desktop charger. When I turn on my FT-60, the display shows the battery voltage then goes to the frequency display. One of the FNB83 batteries shows 8.2 volts on the display. This one lasts for 3-4 days before recharging. The other two batteries show 7.2 volts on the display and last one day, almost two days at best. One of them often doesn't even make it through the day -- most of my operation is listening. Any idea why the differences? Thanks, Joe W4HH

FT-60R as a scanner?
16
the other day, I was at a swap meet in SoCal and was about ready to plop $60 down on a scanner when it occurred to me that I already had a pretty decent scanner in my FT-60R. So I thought I'd ping the group for input and ideas on how any of you incorporated your rig in this manner. Groups comes to mind. But any other ideas or things you have tried? Thanks in advance, Bill, k6whp

Change to Groups.Io
3
To all, I¡¯ve seen a number of requests to transfer to Groups.IO. I have transferred all of my other active groups to Groups.IO, and the experience has been much better. I realize no one likes change, but I think this will be for the better. Everything is transferred automatically, so it should be seamless. The new group name will be: [email protected] Please wait a few days before trying to subscribe. All members, messages, links, photos, etc. will be automatically transferred. There will be a message sent when the transfer is complete. Until then, this group will function the same as it always has. Should you not wish to make the change, it will be easy to unsubscribe from the new group. Seriously, the experience with groups.IO has been excellent. Yahoogroups has become very flaky, and I worry that this yahoogroup will disappear, taking all the accumulated knowledge with it. ¡¯73 de JIM N2ZZ Owner ¨C ft60@...
