Congrats on the ticket, Vic! You'll have fun with this neat little radio.I suggest finding out what repeaters are within range in your area and get on some nets. This site as a neat app that lists repeater details based on where you are:

Then you can look here for nets in your area:

You can also find clubs on ARRL's site. Local clubs are a great way to learn and get involved.

Have fun!

I use an iPhone and have found the app RepeaterBook very helpful. It gives you everything you need to find repeaters in your area and it’s free!

KA6RWB? ?? ? ? Typo ?? ? ?new ones seem to start with KN6 ???? ?Just asking .

I got local (So Cal) repeaters and man there is no traffic except on this "outlaw" station and that thing is pure bs worse than any CB channel I ever heard - I've tried everyday for about a week and only got one guy on a net- It's a start I guess gonna try some of them other nets- but after the check in on that net- that was it- no more convo- guess I wasn't someone they knew so not worth talking to -but it's a start I guess

Welcome and enjoy that handheld , its a nice radio.?

congrats Vic, I like mine and my son here in BC just got one.
they are quite full of abilities, I just worked into satellite AO-91 while standing in my sons back yard. It wasnt a strong contact but for just a hand held with the stock whip , I was impressed, nice way to end my vacation out here, 2 hrs before the flight home.
good luck, Bob VE3CGA

As others have said, congratulations on your ticket and welcome to amateur radio. Inasmuch as I am commenting on the FT60 venue, my advice may regarded by more than one of the members here with a gimlet eye. However, I would seriously -- and very respectfully -- recommend that you immediately branch out and find what other facets of the hobby/service sound intriguing.

There are these new folks who are referred to a "Baofeng Techs" who think this is only about attempting to check into drive time round tables on the local repeater with their HT (usually a Baofeng) and do little else for five or so years before going back to philately.

As an example of variety, Clint, K6LCSI, will tell you, there is a wealth fun to be discovered in Satellites. Others become enamored of HF and/or spend their hours chasing DX. VHF/UHF geeks revel in..well..the VHF and UHF technologies and the incredible explosion of digital and linked repeater systems and talk groups and all that. My personal crush is HF QRP with an eye towards building and operating outdoors whit the radios I build.

It is mind-bogging the array of fun stuff to be found here in amateur radio.

You take my point, I am sure. But one thing you may rely on is that a great many hams are more than eager to share their knowledge with you so do not be afraid to ask.

Best of luck and hope to hear you on some time!
