Re: Hole in 900Mhz

PATRICK MASON

FRED,
The cellular companies years ago convinced the FCC and the Federal Government to make the privacy act law. Unfortunatley you are correct. If you build your "homebrew" and it can receive cellular, or any other transmissions protected by the Act. Yup we would be in violation. That is why it took many years for the digital scanners to become REALITY.
Uniden had to prove the digital scanners did not violate the privacy act.

Thanks Clint, s1moller, and Fred for your feedback.
?
Fred, I haven't ordered the RT software yet. I wanted to see how satisfied the current users are. I realize that,?with the FT-60 being newly released, any software issued now may need some?tinkering-with in the future.
?
It appears, from a scan of the reviews on eHam, that, in general,?ADMS software seems to generate strong opinions. Some users clearly dislike it and others think it's great--not much middle ground, it seems.

Thanks for the responses!

ADMS-1J is working fine for me. I have programmed about 300 channels
into modified and non-modified units with no problems.

I believe Jim's product is still "growing" - there were a couple
problems with using it on modified HTs. But, knowing Jim, he will
refine it until perfect!

The activity (listening to cellular conversations) prohibited by
the statute is a "crime of specific intent". That is, you must intend to
tune and listen to the conversation; not just accidently find it as a
result of your dabbling in electronic projects. Now, if you discover the
transmission and keep the device to listen to future calls ... or build one
whenever you feel like listening, that is a violation of the law.

Remember that there are still a lot of analog cell towers in use, and even more cell phones that still have analog capabilities. Therefore you are still able to hear those people that are using the analog side (especially in less populated areas) and/or in areas where there's so many people using the towers that some peoples phone switch (roam) to the analog side so that the call can still be made.

Mark,

I have you received the RT software yet?? I am waiting for the final release as I participated in the beta.? I also have a FT-7800r and use the RT software with that. ?So I thought it would be easier to stick with one vendor.? I actually gave them some feedback that they incorporated so that the two exchange data a bit easier and I had another suggestion concerning the Banks that I hope they will implement.

?

I haven’t had the opportunity to play with the FT-60 commander.? The reason being, if I really need to do anything special I prefer to export my list from the program, fix it up in excel or write a script and then import it back into the cloning software.? So, as long as I can import and export from RT I am happy.? If I come up with some good macros I will post them on the site.

ADMS-1J is working fine for me. I have programmed about 300 channels
into modified and non-modified units with no problems.

I believe Jim's product is still "growing" - there were a couple
problems with using it on modified HTs. But, knowing Jim, he will
refine it until perfect!

Re: Hole in 900Mhz

Ah, so for the techno savy out there, lets take a break from putting down
this radio and lets come up with a strategy for plugging the hole! What are
the legal issues concerning monitoring the cell frequencies. Certainly, you
can't disclose to third parties, but I don't think anybody can stop you from
listening. The fathers' of the constitution may not of had this (radio) in
mind but I think it is ok.

Isn't that where cellular images are?

FT60 Adms software

Used the software for first time to transfer some memories to a new
ft60. Memories transferred ok, but when I switched to VFO and
manually entered a repeater frequency, the shift frequency was not
able to be viewed upon pressing the rev button (although the negative
shift icon was there and flashing). Additionally, when pushing the
ptt the radio stayed on the receive frequency. Checked all menus
items, auto repeater shift, split etc. and they seemed properly set
in the software and in the radio. Any thoughts?

Does the FT-60 use the same speaker mic as the FT-50, VX-5, and
VX-150?

Absolutely. Among other Yaesu HTs, too.

For what it's worth, I have the vx150, ft60R and the VX2R, the ear-bud
microphone that I bought for the VX2r, model MH37, works fine with
the vx150 and FT60. I'm guessing, but I'd think the speaker mic should
be inter-changeable between the radios as well.

Re: headphone question, and Adapter suggestion

Ed,
A young ham came to the last meeting with a vx-5 and the speaker mic. I
should have grabbed it and tried it. He likes it because he said the
speaker on the vx-5 is small and this gave him plenty of audio. Maybe he
will come to the next meeting. Forgot his name. He recently got his
license and his mom brought him to the meeting.

You need the CT-44 microphone adapter and your headphones fit in the
standard (larger) jack. I bought it, tried it and it works!

is this a standard jack that I can plug any ol' set of headphone
into, or is it a special size that I need to buy one of their
accessories for?

Also, I haven't seen it posted here but on the RailScan list I was
pointed to a Ham selling a much better SMA-BNC adapter than you find
with the radio. The rubber housing should support it and make it much
more sturdy than the thin metal ones they sell with the radio. Just
thought I'd pass this along since many people here will be using an
adapter :)
