EJ25 high fuel consumption 16
Hi folks, I have ej25 in my Westfalia T3 Syncro (syncro swap). Friend of mine made a swap to Ej25 6 months ago. I did not pay attention too much to the fuels consumption since the beginning of new live with ej25 being fascinating plenty with the great performance. Recently, I started to measure fuels consumption manually. It seems to me I am burning about 16-18 litres per 100km mixed city and highway. I am not trashing much. It seems to me high. I also can smell the fuel right after stopping. What should I look into? How I can identify the issue? Or it is an expected consumption? My T3 is offrowad equipped and a bit heavier I guess than usual. Any advice? Where to look first?

I used Paul's Smog Check ¡¤ 10199 Riverford Rd. Ste C Lakeside, CA 92040. (619) 562-6222 Full disclosure - I only actually got this one name and location, though I was told there were ¡°several¡± in the area. Paul did a great job, fast and professional. He does require an appointment and his hours are a bit odd ¨C he opens at 3 pm! That is not a typo. And he¡¯s punctual, expects you to be as well. So for sure, call in advance. I believe he charged something like $50 ¨C don¡¯t quote me, don¡¯t assume! Lakeside is about five minutes outside of El Cajon. If you need to, you can probably call Cesar at California Westys in El Cajon. His team did my conversion. Call and enquire about the other locations he mentioned in our conversations. He is at (619) 518-7050. Google California Westys ¨C he¡¯s got a full website with lots of information. Finally, to set expectations: Paul is a good guy, knows conversions. But ¨C he is A) not a miracle worker. If your vehicle is out of spec, he can¡¯t help. B) He is not a repair shop, and per the rules he can¡¯t even recommend one (this is stated on posters around his shop). I've had a Leon Kworkin conversion for almost 20 years. Always worked great and always passed smog tests except once due to rotted out gas cap gasket. But (as many may know) Leon couldn't get his clients official BAR code stickers (long story) so I've had to drive to his home turf (Torrence, CA) every two years to use a smog check shop familiar with the Executive Order who wasn't afraid of the BAR. All my local smog shops won't do it. I'm in Carlsbad, so El Cajon would be much more convenient. Engine light check - Smog Check purgatory WRAP UP 6
Hi ¨C Mid January, many of you were following/helping me find and fix a Check Engine Light fail. That problem meant I was not going to be able to get the van smog checked. I finally resolved all issues (well, mostly). Thought I would explain what had to happen. I wish this was a tale where I learned some great secrets, have become an expert, and can pass my wisdom on to others. Nope. I finally called the original installer in El Cajon, CA, and he agreed to see me and fix the issues ¨C to his credit. So I made the 5 hour drive down (took 7 hours as I had to cross the LA basin north to south amid morning traffic). His guys got right on the issue. Turns out there were two problems ¨C a connector into the main connector cluster ¨C pin 14 I think - in the Instrument panel was broken. And ¨C very key ¨C it was also missing the wire that should have been in that slot (presumably providing power to the CEL). Once that all got rectified, I was good to go. Bonus ¨C El Cajon has a couple state certified smog shops and are very familiar with this conversion. 100% legal in case you were wondering, and they don¡¯t need that silly Sticker/bar code, as the engine is clearly marked indicating it meets/passes the CARB directive. So, while we were down there, we were able to get smog certified, no problem. Then another 6 hour drive home . Good Times. Only took two+ weeks of futzing around to get to this point. Thanks to all who offered support. Hope I can one day return the favor. Terry

some positive feedback 6
I have been following this site since before I did a conversion to my '84 westy, Buttercup, using a $500.00, 210,000 mi. '96 2.2 Subaru donor car. I want to offer a little encouragement to the people considering it. All the posts about check engine lights, ecu warnings, and idling problems can be discouraging, I would like to counter that with a story about my experience with the van on the road. I did the DIY conversion in 2020, including fabricating engine mounts, wiring harness, shift linkage and reversed trans. over a period of a few months. In 2022 my wife and I decided to visit friends and family across the country as far as Quebec and Maine. We had put a few thousand miles on the conversion by then and I trusted it enough to figure it would get us back to Calif. again. So off we went, with no problems til Portland, Oregon when a fan thermostat refused to turn the fan on in traffic. a light tap with the end of a screwdriver got it working again. After that, the van performed flawlessly across the country and back, going as fast as I needed to keep up with traffic. On the return trip, we had been enduring 100 degree days across the midwest and over the Rocky Mts. on highway 70 with no AC, so decided to take highway 15 west to the coast for some relief. US 15 across Utah and Nevada passes thru a geological feature known as the basin and range complex. We were traversing that, heading down slope off one range and across 5+ miles of valley floor when I saw in my mirror a F350 Ford towing a big 5th wheel trailer blowing black smoke as it was fixing to pass us. Lacking AC, we have all the windows open as it is over 100 degrees and I realize that he is going to smoke us out with "burning coal" so I step on it just enough to keep ahead of him. He has this huge box he is dragging so it wasn't hard to stay ahead, 3400 RPM in 5th was around 70 MPH so our little Buttercup was not straining. As we started to climb, I shifted to 4th and 4000 RPM and can see the smoke cloud increase in my rearview mirror as he kicks down a gear. Finally up at the top of the pass, I see that the wind has shifted and the smoke is blowing back on his trailer, so I let him pass. He just stays in the fast lane, no let up,trailing a black cloud, as we resume our cruising speed. The next up slope, 10 miles later, we see the same rig, over at the side of the road with the hood up and white smoke, not steam coming from the engine compartment. I couldn't help myself from giving him a friendly beep, beep, beep as we went by. That extra 40 HP makes the difference in these vans. You won't regret it. Paul

Update on Groups.io Reverification Process 4
Folks: I received the email below yesterday afternoon and wanted to share as many of you will be affected. Bottom line is that an email server at Groups.IO got marked as a spam email server by a software package named Spamhaus. Groups.io began a user revivification process which sends an email requesting reverification to a subset of our users. I just looked at a listing of affected users and found that of our 5608 users, 37 have already reverified and 63 are still being reverified. Just a heads up to be on the lookout for a reverification email. MUCH more information on the topic is available for your reading below. Best, Brent Begin forwarded message: From: "Groups.io Reverification" <[email protected]> Subject: Update on Groups.io Reverification Process Date: January 25, 2024 at 4:00:42 PM CST To: "Brent Weide" Dear Brent Weide, You are receiving this email because you are an owner or moderator of one or more Groups.io groups. We are in the process of reverifying some of our users and we wanted to make sure you knew what was happening and why. For more detail about this, please visit the Reverification FAQ, at /static/reverifyfaq On Saturday January 13th, 2024, an anti-spam service called Spamhaus labeled one of our email servers as a spam sender. This caused any email service that uses Spamhaus to stop accepting email from our server. Because of this, we began a reverification process and sent out reverification emails to a subset of our users on Sunday January 14th. Spamhaus lifted their block on Monday, January 15th, 2024, but we need to continue the reverification process. You can see which, if any, of your users are affected. Go to the Admin section of your group and look at the Members page. Next to each user's email, there may be a badge with the letters RI or RS. RI means the confirmation/reverification is in progress, but has not been completed. RS means the confirmation/reverification has been successfully completed. Here are the next steps in the reverification process: On Sunday, January 28th, group emails to people in the RI state will be disabled. Messages from moderators and login link emails will still work. Until February 11th, people will still be able to reverify themselves and the RI and RS badges will still show up in the Members page. After that, members still in the RI state will be removed from groups. The activity log entry will be Membership - Member Removed, with the added reason of reverification failed. For domains where no reverifications happened, no invites or direct adds will be permitted going forward. If there is a valid person on one of those domains, they should contact [email protected] to have the domain ban lifted. We apologize for the inconvenience this process may cause, but it is necessary to ensure that we are able to continue delivering group email reliably. Thank you for using Groups.io. Best Regards, The Groups.io Team

Engine light check - Smog Check purgatory 21
Hi all ¨C I have an ¡¯87 Vanagon conversion, done a year ago November. I¡¯m in California. Just got my first Registration notice that requires a smog check. Going through the ringer with the Referee trying to get the Bar Code sticker that all my local smog stations seem to need. Fair enough. As part of the referee process, the referee says he needs to see a functional Check Engine light, and I assume he wants to see that it comes on. I don¡¯t know a way to get the light to come on. Needless to say, the engine is in great shape, so no reason for it to come on in the first place. Any ideas? It does not light up when I start the engine. This is the Subaru 2.2L conversion, as described by CARB executive order D-428-4, KEP (Kennedy Engineered Products), installed by California Westys in El Cajon, CA. In my third day of trying to get a smog check. Ugh. Thanks for any ideas on showing a functional Check Engine light. Terry Cline Paso Robles, CA 805 305 7638

Wiring for Check Engine Light 7
Hi SV Group, I'm having problems with my check engine light. It a manual trans, '91 EJ22. I'm using the KEP wiring diagram. I have one side of the light running to the engine compartment and the other under the dash ta the fuse box. See pictures. In the engine compartment the wire goes into a White plug attaching to the yellow wire. Under the dash it attaches to a Black/yellow wire, is the the Tach wire? Thanks in advance, Rich

CEL on for a few minutes or a few miles and goes off 3
Online it says it could be an ECU problem. Start looking for a replacement before you get a no start. Have you tried a reset by D/C battery and connect positive cable to ground to totally discharge the capacitors on the ECU?

EG33 Hard Start 11
I converted my 86 Westy to EG33/Subarugears back in 2018 and everything has been peachy until recently. I now need to crank the van for quite some time before it starts. Once it does, it fires right off and idles like there was no problem. I can immediately turn it off and restart with no problem so I don¡¯t think it¡¯s a coolant temperature thing. If it sits overnight, the problem pops up again. It doesn¡¯t seem like it¡¯s flooded as holding the throttle wide open makes no difference. I can also let the fuel pump cycle a few times and, no difference. It seems more like an ignition problem than a fuel one though it runs perfectly once it has started. I have read where someone else with a EG33/Impreza swap had the same problem and everyone suggested the coolant sensor but it made no difference to him. The coolant doesn¡¯t warm up without the engine running¡ Mine sounds like exactly the same problem. Has anyone experienced this?

2.2 Cold start 4
Hey group. New Subie guy w/700K+ of Vanagon time... but newly installed 2.2/2.5 Franken. Van is pretty hard to start below about 45F. I have checked some on the forums, seems like the "key on/off repeatedly fuel pump" trickF helps maybe a little. Van runs flawlessly once going, and the 2.5 w mod 2.2 heads feels like the the motor it's was always supposed to have- (thanks to Outback Motors for build.) Anyway I figured I'd replace the OE pump (and filter) just because it has more than 100K, pressure reg seems like it works generally normally but I was wondering do some folks change to to a Subie fuel delivery; pump, filter etc. Is there a check valve as I have seen some mention? Can someone point me to a thread on "Subaru Cold weather system ops" and how the OBD1 system compensates for temps.... pls tell me what other new Subaru parts I can throw at it LOL. I am in the Mnts of Nevada with wild temp swings. (don't get me started on the cabin heating system LOL!! Install was professionally done last year by an "out of business"shop in SoCal -with his "new" 2.2 drinking a quart of oil every 600 miles (hence Outback saving me)...nice right? "Thanks and Merry Christmas... I am in awe of you guys that did these harness and all from scratch pretty dang amazing.

Puzzle - Searching Idle (Only with headlights on) 8
Happy holidays gang. Hope this finds you all well and happy. I've got a head scratcher for you all. 1999 Subaru EJ25 DOHC in a 1991 Vanagon Multivan w/ Automatic Transmission I don't drive her much anymore as I spend all my time in Mexico and the van stays back home in Oregon. I feel adequately guilty about that. I've got a problem with idle that is easily reproducible. With engine warm (or cold), transmission in drive, vehicle stationary, headlights off, the idle is smooth and right around 750. Life is good. Same conditions as above but now I turn on my headlights. Idle begins to cycle, it surges to around 1500 and slowly tapers off to around 700 or so where it again surges. Over and over. This is uncomfortable as the vehicle is trying to leap forward with the surge and it just ain't right. I've got a smallcar vss on the cv but have not tested it recently. Doesn't make sense to me that it's faulty as the only thing that's changing that causes the surging is more alternator draw because of the headlights being on. Anyone have any suggestions for troubleshooting? Appreciate your support. Brent

Help Identifying Conversion History 1986 Syncro with 6cyl Subaru 16
recently purchased a repainted blue 1986 Syncro with a six cylinder Subaru conversion. CarFax shows car has lived in Oregon, Washington and Idaho over the years, changing hands mote often in the past few years. Appears to have rebuilt transmission as case looks fresh. Vehicle came with no documentation so I am hoping to find out who did the conversion, and the harness, any info on the transmission and other helpful facts so I can avoid duplicating work already done. Thanks in advance if you can help I.D. This van.

Switching from Kennedy adapter to RJES 16
I have run for many trouble free years using the Kennedy adapter. The adapter plate itself is dissolving quite extensively. I happen to have an rjes bellhousing kit kicking around that I may want to use in the event that the adapter plate is toast. Does anyone know if the subie starter motor has any interference issues w the diff lock assembly? This is in a syncro. Any info/thoughts are appreciated.

rear springs 4
I looked at the digest and many of the rear spring threads are pretty old. Is there new information out there? I am most likely sitting on original springs front and back (84 westie, ej22 conversion, VW transaxle). The rear end really drops when starting out in 1st gear. GoWesty specifically their springs are not for vehicles with engine conversions. Small Car has springs for 'spirited' driving (not sure if I do that). Does anyone have any other recommendations? I did the rear springs in the 84 tin top I have (1.9 WB) this past summer because one broke so I have the bug to do the westie. Thanks.

For the second issue - I accepted personal donations for several years and found out that it was more difficult to track and maintain funds (keeping track of your money) during the year. 2023/24 Membership For Another Year of SubaruVanagon 6
Morning Folks. It¡¯s been 4 years since we migrated our group off of yahoo groups over here to Groups.io. To give you a short history, we migrated in 2019 and have run off of membership funding since that time. Our group uses more than the allotted 1 gig of photo/attachment/files storage which is available for a free group. A poll/vote was held in November of 2020 wherein members voted to maintain all of our content and fund the group. The next step up from free is the Premium Group which is how we roll. Our group fee of USD $220.00 is due on Monday, December 5, 2023 for the next twelve months. We still have $51 left over from last years donations. So - we¡¯re hoping to get $169 this year. In years past I asked for donations to be made directly to me as I am ultimately responsible for the payment to Groups.io. But now, I¡¯ve configured the group to allow donations/sponsorships through a newly available built-in function. I believe this will make things easier on you, the supporting member. There¡¯s a minimum sponsorship amount of $5.00 USD. I¡¯ll track the sponsorship activity/amount and once we reach our goal I¡¯ll send another notification to you all and disable the sponsorship link. Wondering how to sponsor us? Go to the home page at /g/SubaruVanagon/ Click on the ¡°+ Sponsor This Group: button. Or, if you want to save a step, browse directly to /g/SubaruVanagon/sponsor Fill out the form fields to complete your sponsor donation via PayPal or Credit Card. Depending on where you live in the world, there may be additional payment methods available to you. Thanks very much for your continued support of the SubaruVanagon group. Your shared knowledge, conversion support posts, and sponsorship, are very much appreciated. Best, Brent Weide - moderator (and Mr. Tom Shiels- moderator)

High and sticky RPM 71
Hey everyone, I am reaching out because I am really getting stuck. I did my EJ25 conversion and my motor runs!. But my van has and extremely high idle at 2000 and if you increase the RPMs they never go back down. So if I throttle it will jump up to 3000 and not come back down, I have to go turn off the motor. What I have done so far is check the cables for sticking. I took apart the TPS sensor and checked it. I took apart the IAC sensor and checked it. All the sensors are brand new, I replaced everything during the installation. I also cleaned the entire throttle body. I hooked up the ODB2 reader and I do get red on CAT and O2S but it also says No Data is Stored on Vehicles Computer. My next step is to adjust the .5 on the TPS. Maybe a vacuum leak? Anyone got any good ways to look for leaks?
