10k metric parts
11
Greetings, a number of years ago I bought my first shop machine, a SB 10k but didn’t notice at the auction it was metric. I think it came from a school and was in pristine condition. I ended up buying an imperial quick change gearbox, leadscrew and half nuts, as I had no interest in metric. I’ve used the large dial crossfeed and compound feed in metric but it’s painful to have to sneak up on diameters. Would there be any interest in these metric parts? Thx, al.

10K end gear set up
5
I’m picking up a 1980s vintage 10k with quick change. The end gears have been set up for metric. Is there a schematic for setting it up standard setting again. I have gears that came with it but I’m not sure which to use. thanks Dave

SB Heavy 10 parts for sale
9
My girlfriend's dad bought a lathe to restore. He thought it was a 10L. In my desire to score brownie points with him, i bought a bunch of parts to help him with his project. Turns out his lathe was a 9a. So, now, I have a number of parts that I cannot use. Does anybody needs parts for a Heavy 10? I will post pictures and a link in the morning because I need light to shoot some photos. I don't need a lot of money for them, so don't worry about the pricing. I only have about 100 bucks into all of them and I just want to clear out space. Also, I am not a dealer so there is no profit motivation. They all fit in a small carboard box weighing maybe 20-30 pounds. Shipping won't be a big expense, either. Let me know if you have any questions Best Regards, Andrei mailto:calciu1@...

quick change gearbox questions
11
Periodic maintenance begets upgrades, as they do. I've had my 1926 9" workshop(?) model B 4 foot for about eight years, and have been upgrading things as needed. I'm thinking that I might take the quick change gearbox plunge. I'm not restoring the lathe, so originality isn't a concern - only compatibility and function. Which QC boxes fit this lathe? I think that the ones up through the 30s fit, but I'm unsure. I looked for a cross-referance/interchange chart for the different generations & models; looked at catalogs, forums, advertisements and anything even remotely related to what parts from later lathes can be fitted to the 20s-era ones. I never use the last foot of lathe bed, so could get by with shortening the lead screw if I can't find the appropriate one. Any guidance is appreciated. If you have one for sale, let me know. I"m fine if it needs to be cleaned or refurbished. I enjoy doing it. Neil In case I'm mis-labeling my lathe, here are photos from the last time it was clean - when I built the table for it in 2017. The table is more colorful now, but too dirty & cluttered to get good photos.

Insert Holder Alloy
25
Anyone happen to know the alloy most likely to be used for carbide insert tool holders? My guess is 4140. I have four that I need to mill down to work in an AXA holder. They test at 45 HRC. Thinking about annealing them before milling and then heat treating again, so I would like specs to use.

Model A Table Top in South New Jersey
3
My Uncle, who used to be on this list, passed away last year. His wife is clearing out his storage and I toured it today. I spotted this lathe, and took some pictures. It's in rough shape and the motor is not connected. Photos attached. Here are the specs that I could glean: Model A Catalog No (hard to read)4-R Bed length: 4 1/2 Serial Number: 106, 490 Additional stamp: USN Propery Cont No BS-909 I do not live near the lathe, so if there's interest, I'll get you in touch with the owner. There is a sale coming, but I don't have the date yet and I thought this group might be a better place with more interest. No price is set. Contact me directly (hillkid@... (mailto:hillkid@...)). I have a spam filter, so either follow the return instructions or text me that you emailed me at 301-928-0728.

Lathe ID

I'm not good at identifying old South Bends. A friend of mine has this lathe and another he will probably scrap. He already got rid of a tail stock. He was told it would cost to much to repair, but you can buy one of these other ones instead. I have not seen them in person yet and have no serial numbers off the bed. I can see it has the single tumbler gear box and looks to be a 9" but that's it for me. If you live in the Southern California area (Burbank) they will probably be available. I know you guys will know what this is. I do have a few other pictures but they don't show much. -- Bill From Socal

Rear Mounted Tool Post for SB 9" Lathes
5
Mike Allen asked for more info on the rear mounted tool post seen on my SB 9". This came to me with the lathe. It's an added dovetail to the cross slide. Held by four smallish cap screws it's not the world most rigid set up. In fact, I've yet to use it! These are frequently speced as useful for an inverted cutoff blade, but I have been parting from the front forever and usually don't have a problem. (I don't part off 4" diameter slugs!) Right now it works well as a flat spot for the cutting fluid! Now don't ask what the three tapped holes down the middle of my half nut lever are for, I don't know! (Someone suggested they were for mounting parts for an 'automatic' disengagement mechanism.) John PS: Are photos being automatically reduced in size? My originals are much higher resolution...

Enco 3.5" turret toolpost
7
I picked up an Enco 3.5" turret toolpost on ebay recently, and am trying to adapt it to use on my 1942 199-Y 10R. It's pretty much identical to this one (https://www.componentsandparts.com/West-/Motor-powered-equipment-/South-bend-clausing-lathe-turret-tool-post-toolpost-usa.idx), down to the dimensions of the index tabs on the underside of the post and the top of the T-nut it came with (not sure about his "A" dimension though, I haven't measured mine from compound to cutter yet). I used a mill at work to make a T-nut for the 10R's compound, but when I fitted the turret to the compound it sits up half an inch or more above center at the cutting tip! The ebay seller was a parts reseller, so they had no idea for what the turret was originally spec'd, it just came in a box of parts from a shop. I went with it because I missed out on another auction for an Enco 3.5" turret in which that seller said came off his 1945 10L. That's what I get for assuming one is like another. Given the information at http://www.wswells.com/data/spec_sheet/7324.pdf , I think the one I got is actually a 3.5" turret for a SB 13", or something similar. I'll get some pics tomorrow morning when I get home from work. I'd be interested in a trade for the right one for my purposes if anyone has one DEFINITELY for a Heavy 10; otherwise, if anyone has a need for it for their 13", I'll gladly sell it for what I paid for it ($100+shipping). Depth of cuts
15
I have a simple question. How deep of cuts do you normally make? I have a 1949 vintage SB9C, with 6 speeds. I replaced the 1/4 hp motor with a 1/2 HP one. I use carbide a lot, but HSS still gets used some. Many of the videos say I should take at least a 0.005" cut for the best finish. I usually cannot take more than 0.002" with dragging down, or stopping, the spindle. What's reasonable for me? Thanks, Steven
