Job Description?

The purpose of this role is to develop, direct, and complete projects involving historical archaeology and/or historic-age built environment resources (e.g., canals, roads, etc.). Projects may be located nationwide; however, it is anticipated that the majority will be in the U.S. Southwest, Great Basin region, and/or California. Below is a list of duties for this position.

?

Duties:

• Perform archival research and/or conduct site file searches at federal, state, tribal, and private repositories.?
• Develop, direct, and participate in Class III survey involving historic resources and/or NRHP assessment and/or documentation of historic resources.?
• Perform construction monitoring.?
• Work collaboratively with the company’s Architectural History Group to prepare historic preservation documents, including architectural inventories; historic building assessments and structure reports; National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) documentation (e.g., registration forms and Multiple Property Documentation Forms, and determinations of eligibility); Historic American Engineering Record (HAER)/Historic American Building Survey (HABS)/Historic American Landscape Survey (HALS) documentation; cultural landscape documentation; historic context studies; and treatment documents.
• Prepare, review, and/or edit technical reports documenting and synthesizing the results of research as well as field and lab work.?
• Consider, document, and make recommendations regarding findings of project effect and appropriate means of avoidance, minimization, and/or mitigation.?
• Coordinate preparation of report figures with GIS staff.?
• Analyze historic artifacts.?
• Develop and adhere to project scopes and budgets.?

• Understand and assist clients with state, federal, and tribal cultural resources compliance.?

Job Qualifications (Education, Experience, and Skills):

• Minimum Education: Master’s degree in anthropology, archaeology, or a closely related field (Ph.D. preferred).?
• Minimum of eight (8) years of experience in Cultural Resource Management (CRM) and a minimum of two (2) years of experience supervising and managing projects.?
• Thorough understanding of U.S. Southwest, California, and/or Great Basin history and applicable federal and state cultural resource management/historic preservation laws.?
• Ability to be added to archaeological permits on state, federal, and tribal lands in the U.S. Southwest and Great Basin region.
• Experience preparing research designs, work plans, and technical reports that meet state and federal standards and guidelines.?

We are currently seeking 2-3 field technicians to help complete various archaeological projects in the southeastern region. These projects are expected to last into summer 2025, with the possibility of more work after then. These are full time, temporary positions. Pay ranges for technician jobs are based on federal GSA rates, dependent on work location (county), and include a $4.93/hr Health & Welfare EO 13706 stipend as well as 11 paid holidays.

Rates start around $24.50/hr for technicians and is commensurate with experience. Per Diem and lodging is provided per the GSA rates for these projects. It is not necessary to be local to Athens or Asheville, but residence in the southeast is preferred. Field Technicians

Field Technicians are responsible for assisting the field supervisor in identifying and recording cultural resources in the field. This includes performing pedestrian survey, excavating shovel tests, identifying and documenting cultural materials (artifacts and features), filling out appropriate site forms and monitoring logs, site/artifact photography, and GPS-based data collection.

The ideal candidate will have:

• Bachelor’s degree or higher in Archaeology/Anthropology or related field
• Field school from an accredited institution or prior professional experience
• Knowledge of standard archaeological field methods for all phases of investigation
• Understanding of the primary themes of prehistory and history in the southeastern US
• Understanding of data collection using handheld GPS units

Project Description and Schedule

UES has an immediate project need for an experienced archaeological monitor for ongoing construction activities at the Naval Air Station (NAS) in Pensacola, Florida. The monitoring must start on Monday 4/21/2025 and is expected to last two days. As part of this monitor role, the successful applicant will conduct cultural resources monitoring tasks that include coordinating with construction crews, monitoring construction progress, maintaining detailed records, and documenting discoveries of cultural resources. Archaeological Monitors and field technicians for Ongoing Project Work in Eastern TN (Greeneville vicinity)

Project Description and Schedule

UES is hiring several archaeological monitors and field technicians to help conduct ongoing monitoring and survey efforts in eastern Tennessee (in the general vicinity of Greeneville). We have project-specific work opportunities that will develop into career-trajectory placement for the right person. The monitoring and phase I survey is a large and ongoing effort, with crews already in the field and project work expected to continue for several weeks at least.

Compensation

The hourly wage for this project will be between $28 and $35, commensurate with experience, attitude, and ability to commit to longer-term sessions. UES’ preference is for a field tech local to Eastern TN but will consider applications from non-local techs. For non-local techs, UES will pay for drive time and accommodation near the project area, along with $68 per diem and a $10 weekly cell phone stipend. UES. Historical Research Associates, Inc. (HRA), is seeking to increase our qualified pool of Architectural Historian Technicians for work in our Portland and Eugene, Oregon; Seattle and Spokane, Washington; and Missoula, Montana, offices. Successful candidates should either currently reside or be planning to relocate to states in which we primarily operate (Oregon, Washington, Idaho, and Montana). Individuals interested in working for HRA for seasonal employment will be selected only from this pool. Pay is $21.25–37.00 per hour, based on location, education, experience, and special skills. HRA reviews wages on an ongoing basis based on technician demonstrated skills and abilities.

The Architectural Historian Technician - Seasonal performs a wide range of project-based research tasks in architecture, historic preservation, and cultural resources management. The nature of the work involves, but is not limited to, Section 106, 36 CFR part 800 – Protection of Historic Properties, Cultural Resource Management principles, and practices.

Applicants must possess:

• A strong familiarity with the National Register of Historic Places criteria.
• A working knowledge of the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards for the Treatment of Historic Properties.
• Must be able to meet the Secretary of the Interior’s Professional Qualification Standards for architectural history, which requires either a Master’s degree in architectural history, historic preservation, or a closely related field, with coursework in American architectural history; or a Bachelor’s degree in architectural history, art history, historic preservation, or a closely related field, with coursework in American architectural history and five years of full-time experience in research and writing concentrating on historic preservation and/or architectural history. Preferred experience includes knowledge of Section 106 and state and local register criteria and statuses and experience in landscape history and architecture and/or culture landscape experience.
• The ability to develop and maintain positive relationships, balance work schedules and demands, provide and receive feedback, seek to resolve conflict through communication and collaboration, and use effective verbal and written communication to listen and communicate effectively.

Preferred skills include:

• A strong knowledge of architectural history and styles in the United States and the ability to describe them in clear, narrative prose, and experience working with survey and inventory methods of recordation and evaluation.
