The Senior Archaeologist will manage and lead research, fieldwork, laboratory analysis, monitoring, and the preparation of technical reports for survey, testing, evaluation, data recovery, and construction monitoring projects. This position requires a command of federal (NEPA, NHPA Section 106) and state?(HRS 6E) cultural resources laws and regulations, excellent verbal and written communication skills, as well as time management and technical skills. Prior Project Manager experience, including budgets and personnel is preferred. Summary of Position

Career opportunity for an Archaeologist PI/Field Director to lead cultural resources field crews and assist in the expansion of archaeology services in the greater Southwestern United States. This position is responsible for leading and conducting all phases of cultural resource investigations under Section 106 and 110 of the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA) and other environmental planning projects, including but not limited to consultation, preparing data recovery and monitoring plans, lead field coordination and interpretation of state and federal laws and report writing. The position may also require knowledge of and experience with the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) and writing sections related to cultural resources for proposed permitting actions.

The Archaeologist PI/ Field Director will supervise and mentor junior or temporary level cultural resource personnel. The Archaeologist PI/FD will also frequently interact and coordinate with clients as well as agency and Tribal representatives. The Archaeologist PI/FD will be knowledgeable of federal, state, and local historic preservation and cultural resources regulations and demonstrate an established area of analytical expertise and/or archaeological research interest. The PI/FD will lead field crew, design fieldwork, oversee the execution of fieldwork, data management, and develop final deliverables.?

Duties & Responsibilities

Duties and responsibilities include planning and managing all phases of cultural resources projects including:

  • Lead cultural resources projects, business development opportunities and provide successful and independent management of archaeological and historic resources projects, including direction of field studies and assembly, supervision and direction of field teams.
  • Lead/Principal investigator for cultural resources projects include performing research, archaeological fieldwork surveys, monitoring, testing, and data recovery projects, historical research, preservation activities, report preparation, site forms and curation of archaeological artifacts.
  • Coordinate project mobilization and demobilization to project sites.
  • Provide successful and independent management of archaeological and historic resources projects, including direction of field studies and assembly, supervision, and direction of field teams.
  • Support Section 106 and Section 110 of the NHPA, including analysis, technical studies and project permitting for a wide variety of private, federal, state and local government clients and tribal entities.
  • Mentor and provide technical and operations resources for staff and project managers and supervise cultural staff.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

  • Master's degree in Archaeology, Anthropology or a related field.
  • Registered Professional Archaeologist
  • Currently hold or are capable of acquiring State and Federal permits for archaeology in New Mexico and Arizona.
  • Minimum of five (5) years of supervisory experience, preferably ten (10) years’ experience in progressively responsible cultural resource positions including management and/or educational experience in the desert southwest and intermountain west region; including experience with architectural historians.
  • Ability to meet deadlines while remaining detail-oriented, organized, and able to work well on simultaneous tasks and be team oriented.
  • Demonstrated excellent verbal and written communication, professional writing, problem solving skills.

About the opportunity


SWCA’s Program Management team is excited to fill a Cultural Resources Assistant Project Manager position, focusing on office and field work supporting renewable energy, transmission, and related industrial projects in the Rocky Mountain Plains Region. This position will be reporting into Sheridan, Wyoming, with job roles in Wyoming and adjacent states. This position is a regular, full-time, hourly, benefitted position eligible for overtime pay at time-and-a-half.

This requisition can hire at two levels:

?

  • Associate Project Manager?- typically, with up to five (5) years of relevant experience and expertise.
  • Assistant Project Manager?- typically, with up to three (3) years of relevant experience and expertise.

?

What you will accomplish


  • Conduct and organize background research, including records searches through State Historic Preservation Offices.
  • Coordinate with clients, agencies, subconsultants, and Native American monitors to arrange fieldwork and facilitate projects.
  • Complete pre-field planning and logistics.
  • Assist the Project Manager on project scoping, proposals, budgets, and timetables..
  • Directly supervise staff:
    • Interviewing, selecting and onboarding new hires
    • Provide direction, training, coaching, performance management and feedback to direct-line supervisees, as well as all field crew members while under deployment
    • Provide corrective actions with staff members, working with HR as needed on discipline and/or discharge
    • Complete field skills assessments on all crew members, providing feedback to ensure team members are learning and advancing skills while work is being performed on time and on budget
    • Complete performance reviews with regular status supervisees, ensuring employee engagement is high and career development plans are actioned
    • Participate with Project Managers, Team Leads and Program Director on overall talent management of the Cultural Resources Program including evaluating staffing levels, scheduling, retaining/continuing/exiting employees, assigning work, determining promotional/status opportunities, making compensation decisions, etc.
  • Supervise fieldwork, including archaeological survey, testing, data recovery, and/or construction monitoring and ensures quality and completeness of data collected, including:
    • Independently assign and direct the activities of others on behalf of SWCA, often in remote areas without immediate guidance from senior managers, to ensure quality and on-time delivery.
    • Ensure that employees understand their responsibilities and delegated tasks and being held accountable if crew members under your supervision are not performing their activities correctly, productively, and safely.
    • Serve as a conduit of communication between employees and senior managers, including communicating issues to relevant senior managers.
    • Receive and resolve complaints from employees in the field.
    • Monitor team productivity and offering timely performance guidance, including determining when correction action is needed and delivering appropriate feedback.
  • Take initiative, resolves problems, and create improved procedures to ensure that tasks are completed in the most effective and efficient manner.
  • In coordination with the project manager, organize and prepare technical reports.
  • Maintain SWCA’s high standard of scientific ethics and quality assurance, and identify and resolve problems in creative ways.
  • Take responsibility for team safety, assisting in safety plans, and identifying potential safety hazards.


Experience and qualifications for success


Minimum qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Anthropology, Archaeology, or a related field.
  • Three years of experience in the archaeology of the western United States.
  • Two years of experience in cultural resources management (CRM) on a variety of project types, sizes, regions, and agencies.
  • Experience with standard archaeological survey and excavation techniques.
  • Ability to travel to a location, walk and conduct fieldwork for long hours, sometimes in inclement weather, rugged terrain, often at high altitudes, and ability to carry equipment and supplies weighing up to 40 pounds.
  • Availability to work extended field rotations and travel accordingly, plus additional hours organizing paperwork/emails daily.

About the opportunity


SWCA Environmental Consultants is seeking an?Assistant Project Archaeologist?to support renewable energy, transmission, and other industrial development projects, reporting into Sheridan, Wyoming. Under supervision of a Cultural Resources Team Lead and Project Manager, an Assistant Project Archaeologist leads field and office tasks while working with and supervising crew members.?Those with more experience are encouraged to apply and will be considered based on their overall qualifications and experience level.??

The successful candidate will manage fieldwork by supervising crews, and will assist with office-based tasks, including preparation of site forms, technical reports, and research in support of primarily renewable energy and transmission projects. Some projects include overtime hours and often require travel and overnight stays. Project-related travel and lodging costs are covered, and per diem is provided for project work requiring overnight stays. Archaeology Field Supervisors will work closely with Project Managers and will supervise field crew to ensure that archaeological survey and documentation are conducted in accordance with all applicable standards and guidelines.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities?include but are not limited to the following:
  • Carry out archaeological investigations (Phase I identification, Phase II evaluation, Phase III data recovery, and archaeological monitoring) in a Cultural Resources Management setting.
  • Supervise an archaeological field crew, taking a leadership role in a team environment.
  • Conduct archaeological excavation outdoors in all weather conditions in both rural and urban environments; with overnight stays on out-of-town projects when required.
  • Provide effective direction and support to field technicians in both fieldwork and lab settings as required.
  • Provide training to new archaeological field technicians and refreshers to existing technicians.
  • Become familiar with D+A’s project management system and technical standards in order to support the project managers in the delivery of consulting services to our clients.
  • Participate in D+A’s Health & Safety program and monitor the Health & Safety performance of archaeological field technicians.
  • Demonstrate a “Safety First” focus and act as a role model to other staff.
  • Maintain a high standard of ethical behavior and uphold D+A’s reputation; and
  • Perform other duties as required, including but not limited to, artifact analysis, reporting, research, and technical services.
Skills/Requirements?of a successful candidate include but are not limited to:
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Archaeology, Anthropology or related field from a recognized program.
  • Working knowledge of the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards and Guidelines for Archeology and Historic Preservation?and familiarity with the survey guidelines for the states of Virginia, Maryland, the District of Columbia, North Carolina, and West Virginia.
  • Demonstrated experience in archaeological fieldwork supervision and the ability to observe and instruct others in good and efficient field methodology at a brisk pace.
  • Knowledge of Virginia cultural history specifically and Mid-Atlantic cultural history more broadly.
  • Knowledge and familiarity with GPS and GIS field equipment and applications.
  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills.
  • Excellent organizational skills; and
  • Valid driver’s license and a clear driving record

(CEI), a woman-owned, full-service environmental and cultural resources consulting firm, is seeking full-time temporary Archaeological Field Technicians for assignment to an upcoming Phase III Data Recovery project near Lake Charles, Louisiana. Fieldwork is expected to begin in early June 2025 and last for approximately 4 months. Preference will be given to candidates who are able to commit for the duration of the anticipated fieldwork. This project will require brief daily travel by boat to access the project site.

Most projects are anticipated to follow a Monday-Friday schedule with 8hr to 10hr workdays, but candidates should be willing to accommodate flexible schedules according to specific project needs. Occasional work on weekends may be required for some projects. Compensation may vary according to candidate qualifications, but candidates can expect to receive between $20 and $25 per hour. UES is hiring multiple field technicians to help conduct Phase I Archaeological Surveys across the Panhandle of Florida. Compensation

The hourly wage for this project will be between $23 and $27, commensurate with experience and attitude. Minimum Qualifications
