-------------------------

As you know, Channelaire Chorus is gearing up for Nashville in November.
Part of our planning is, of course, fundraising. And now we have a brand new
idea that will help us raise money while also benefiting YOU!

It's a TALENT AUCTION called "C-BAY" (C = Channelaire!). Go to our chorus
Web site and check out all the different talents and skills that you, your
quartet, or your chorus can take advantage of.

It's easy to place a bid. Just select the item(s) you're interested in,
click the e-mail link for that particular "talent", type in your bid amount,
name and chorus, and hit "Send." It's that's easy!

C-BAY will be live on our Web site through August 15, so check back
periodically between now and then to see if someone has out-bid you!

Help us get to Nashville and enjoy one or more of the 25 items up for
auction.

Click on this link: <A href=">Channelaire Chorus
</A> or go directly to our Web site by typing www.channelaire.org in your Web
browser.

For questions, e-mail Debbie Curtis at curtisnotes@....

Happy bidding and good luck!

It's trial scoring time!

Hello, Region 11!

Region 11 is offering a Trial Scoring opportunity at the 2002 Summer
Regional Seminar during the Double Quartet Contest on Friday, August 9
in Bakersfield. This is an excellent educational
opportunity for singers of all levels of expertise to learn more about
our craft.

Because, really, we pour over those score sheets when they come back
from contest. But do we really understand the rules, the scoring,
what's important and what the judges are looking for? Now's a great
time to learn more!

Anyone and everyone in your chorus is encouraged to pick a category,
pick up a pencil, and learn what judging is all about. All you need to
do is respond via e-mail indicating your interest. Be sure to include
your name, chorus name, address, and the category — Music, Expression,
Sound or Showmanship — that you'd be interested in judging.

A pre-contest briefing will be held to give out paperwork and go over
each category and the use of scoresheets. Post-contest meetings with
individual judges will be held to answer questions and evaluate the
scoring work on an individual basis.

The judges you'll be working with (after the contest) are: Dot Calvin
in the category of Music, Linda Taylor in the category of Sound, Bitsy
Gordy Kirkpatrick in the category of Expression and Dede Nibler in the
category of Showmanship.

Attendance is limited to the first 17 applicants, so be sure to sign up
today! All participants will receive notification (from me) prior to
competition weekend of their judging category and the schedule for the
pre-contest briefing.

This is a fun class, a great way to see and hear the contest, and an
opportunity to take a walk in a judge's "shoes." I look forward to
seeing you in Bakersfield!

In harmony,

Kathy Laderman

ORDER THE NEW "HISTORY OF REGION 11" VIDEO

After working through some technical difficulties, the new Region 11 history
video -- "Music and Memories" -- is finally ready for distribution.

To refresh your memory, this was the video that was shown during the Sunday
brunch at contest. It contains 3 sections totaling approx. 1 hour of video:

-- "Year in Review" with contest and chorus candid photos from 2001-2002

-- "History of Champions" with a photo and the names of every Region 11
quartet and chorus champion from 1958 to 2001.

-- "A Look Back" with more than 100 vintage clips and photos from recent
years, as well as years and years (and years!) ago.

If you would like a copy of this memorable video "scrapbook", it can be yours
for just $15. (The cost was originally set at $25, but I got a good deal on
the duplicating!)

Don't miss this chance to own a copy of this Region 11 history -- laugh at
the costumes, be amazed by the hair-dos, and reminisce when you see the
photos of friends who are no longer with us.

If you would like to order a copy of the video, please contact Debbie Curtis
at curtisnotes@... or at the address below no later than June 28. Mail
checks -- payable to Sequoia Pacifica Region 11 -- to:

More about Sing Out For Peace...

Just received this from Joey, the editor of the Pitch Pipe.

---------------------------------------

Dear SAI members:

I am posting to tell you that we have uploaded the Sing Out For Peace
information on our Web site at:

Each chorus president should have already received the official Sing Out For
Peace packet in the Connection Newsletter mailing.

However, if you would like another packet, each sheet in the packet is listed
in a downloadable format on the above-mentioned Web address. Also, you will
find example press releases on the Web.

We have high hopes that this campaign will be a success and that the majority
of our regions and chapters will participate. Imagine the local, national and
international press coverage Sweet Adelines International and its members
will gain during the campaign. The possibilities are limitless.

Several choruses have already been in contact with our office regarding the
events they have planned. And we are THRILLED!!

As I received comments and suggestions from choruses around the world I will
post them on our Web site at the above address. Hopefully participating
choruses and members will find the suggestions useful for their event. I plan
on adding those suggestions within the next few weeks, depending on the
correspondence I receive.

Please let me know if you have questions or concerns regarding Sing Out For
Peace.

Don't forget to fill out and send in the Pre-participation forms by July 1,
2002.

I wish you all luck in planning your events. Have FUN!!!!!!

Kindest regards,

Joey Mechelle Stenner

Sing Out For Peace

Please pass this message on to your chorus membership.

--------------------------

Sweet Adeline International is gearing up for one of the biggest media events
in its nearly 60-year history.

Remember the impact of Hands Across America in the 1980's? I participated --
did you? Sweet Adelines Intl. is offering all members worldwide the
opportunity to become involved in a global event called Sing Out For Peace.

The purpose of this event is to bring music, song, and happiness to those
whose lives were touched by the tragedies that took place on September 11,
2001. The events of that day made a last impression on America and the world
as a whole.

Sing Out For Peace -- set to take place on September 11, 2002 -- will be a
celebration of life through music and will be dedicated to the world and its
people.

International is encouraging all choruses to participate in a singing event
on September 11, 2002 -- it could be as simple as singing a few songs outside
a federal building, courthouse, fire station, school or church. Or start
working now with your city to plan an event. Several of our Region 11
choruses already have plans in the works.

After the event, choruses will be urged to send articles, newspaper
clippings, photos and videotapes of the performance to International. There
will be a big spread in the January 2003 Pitch Pipe to highlight some
performances.

I recently received a packet of information about Sing Out For Peace from
International, including sample news releases, Questions/Answers, Song
Suggestions and Order Forms, and various other materials. I've requested
that these materials be sent to me electronically -- International is working
on it, and will let me know when they're available so I can pass them on to
you.

In the meantime, mark your chorus calendars now and let's work together to
make this the largest international singing event of the 21st century!

One Night Stands!

The Harborlites chorus is hosting "One Night Stands," a monthly event
for those interested in quartetting (seriously or not). This is open
to everyone (from every chorus) who wants to participate, no strings
attached. The first one will be held next week, with additional dates
to be announced.

According to Claire, who's hosting the event this time, singers from
over 8 different choruses have already RSVP'd, so it should be fun and
a chance to meet some new folks.

The official information:

ONE NIGHT STANDS ARE BACK!

All current and potential quartet singers are invited to a
QUARTET MATCHING PARTY

FRIDAY, MAY 24TH, 7:00 P.M.

Quartet Matching with a difference - we'd like to make this a monthly
event.

We'll get together with singers from all over Southern California and
do some voice matching. The goal will be for you to leave that evening
with the names and phone numbers of at least one potential quartet! It
will then be your responsibility to get together on your own to learn a
regional song which you will then present at the
next "ONE NIGHT STAND"!

After your performance, the quartet "breaks up" and all members can be
re-matched! Participants can be in as many "One Night Stand" quartets
as time and energy allows!

Existing registered quartet singers are also welcome to participate to
share their valuable experience.

This will also be a great opportunity to create some novice or double
quartets for Summer Regional.

Our "matcher" this month will be
Patty Cobb, Tenor
of the Region 21 Regional Champs
Persuasion
(and member of the International Faculty).

Please invite your friends in other choruses.

PLEASE R.S.V.P. TO Claire Westberg 949-493-2284, email
claire@...

Location: 30201 Outpost Road
San Juan Capistrano, Ca
call Claire Westberg (Harborlites)

2002-2003 Membership Directory

It's time to place your order for the new 2002-2003 Regional Membership
Directory.

All members of Region 11 are listed, complete with address, phone numbers,
member number, voice part, quartet name, and e-mail. Many people have said
that they've found the Directory to be the most useful source of information
about our region's membership, and that their copies are very worn from
constant use.

NEW THIS YEAR: the Directory will feature each chorus' most recent
competition photo, as well as some other "goodies" that haven't been included
in the past.

The price is just $10 for the loose-page version (to put into your own
binder) or $15 for a convenient spiral-bound version. Consider BUYING TWO --
one for home, and for your office, your car, or your chorus bag. You’ll be
surprised how often you’ll refer to it!

Directories will be available for delivery at Summer Seminar in Bakersfield
in August. Please e-mail or call me with your order by Friday, May 17.
Remember to specify which binding you prefer and the quantity of each.

Thanks,
Debbie Curtis

Re: [Region11] Digest Number 38

Hi Debbie,

I think it's important for the small chorus directors to focus on improving their vocal production rather than looking for outside reasons for not scoring well.

I'm sure Lisbet would be one of the first to agree that size doesn't matter. This is the second time in just a few years that her chorus has been Most Improved, first place small chorus, and then medaled over-all. They beat BOTH mid-sized choruses.

Last year, Santa Monica ranked similarly.

L.A. South Towns had 40 onstage (41, with Caroline) and they still didn't make the medals in any category. Also, their number on stage went up over last year, but their music and sound scores went down. (Although their expression and show went up...didn't you LOVE their visual package? I thought it was awesome, though it still wasn't enough to pull their placement up, again because of the most important 70%.)

The bottom line is the better we sing, the better we score. I would love to see us take responsibility for our own progress. If we sing well, more people will join and then we'll have bigger choruses!

Subject: Chorus-size designations

I sent the following message to Kathy Carmody last week -- she's Region 11's
liaison to the International Board of Directors. Kathy's response follows my
letter.

Debbie Curtis

------------------------------

Hi Kathy!

I was asked last week about the survey International did about the
size designations for small, mid-size and large choruses.

In our contest this past weekend, we had 12 small choruses, 2 mid-size, and
2
large choruses competing. Our small chorus numbers average around 25 or so,
and they feel it is nearly impossible to compete against a chorus with 40
members (just under the mid-size cut off).

International asked for feedback about the size designations, but we haven't
heard anything about the results. I told the small chorus director who
asked
me about it last weekend that I would try to find out if a decision had been
made.

Can you help?

Thanks,
Debbie Curtis
Region 11 CTC

Hi Debbie,

Thanks for your note and I'll try to answer your question. The issue of
numbers for small, mid, and large choruses is a topic that the International
Board, the EDC, and the Judge Specialists have discussed at great length,
trying
to come up with the best solution. We are very aware that there is concern
among
the membership about these designations. We have agreed, after considerable
debate, that we will revisit the issue after it has been in place for a while
longer...probably two years.... and determine if the numbers need to change.
So often board decisions are hard to accept and we are tempted to reverse
or
change our minds. What we've learned, sometimes the hard way, is that
decisions
take time to settle with the membership and we would be shortsighted to make
another change too soon. Please feel free to write and express your feelings
and
those of your region to the Int'l. Board, and your letter will be taken
seriously. We need and want to hear from the membership. You'll notice I'm
copying in our new International President, Carole Kirkpatrick, just to keep
her
informed of your concern.

Thanks, Debbie, and I look forward to seeing you in June.

In Harmony,
Kathy

Survey - News @ 11

Hi all!

I am looking into ways that I can improve News @ 11, and would like your
input.

Please take a few minutes to complete this survey and return it to me. And
please forward it to others in your chorus and encourage them to give their
feedback, too.

Just copy/paste the questions into another mail message, and then type your
answers in right after each question. No separate attachments, please.

I'd like to get your answers in the next week or so -- if you can, please
take the time now and send it off to me so you won't forget.

Thanks for your feedback!

Debbie Curtis

P.S. -- Sorry to those of you who get more than one copy of this -- it means
you're listed in more than one of my e-mail address groups.

NEWS @ 11 SURVEY

-- Do you like reading the Chorus news? Is there too much, too little, or
just right amount??

-- Do you like reading the Quartet news? Is there too much, too little, or
just right amount?? Right now, due to space limitations, article submissions
are limited to competing quartets (regional and international) -- should any
registered quartet be able to submit an article?

-- What other information would you like to see in News @ 11?

-- more regional news
-- more International news
-- more tips on membership
-- more tips on marketing/PR
-- paid ads from outside vendors
-- features spotlighting people in the region
-- other??

-- The average News @ 11 runs 16-20 pages. Is that too long?

-- News @ 11 is distributed at Contest, Summer Seminar and Fall/Winter -- do
you typically read the issue while in Bakersfield, or do you usually wait
until you get home
to read it?

-- Some regions now only publish an electronic version of their regional
newsletter to
save printing and mailing costs. If the Region 11 offered News @ 11 only
online
(simplified, downloadable Word doc.), would you take the time to read it?
Do you think
you or someone in your chorus would be willing to download it for others
in your chorus
who are not online?

Services for Dottie Pieson

The service for Pam Pieson's mom, Dottie, will be held on Saturday, March 23
at 11:00 a.m. at Pacific Coast Calvary Chapel, 6400 Westminster Blvd.,
Westminster, after which everyone is invited to Gerry and Nick Papageorge's
home. The Calvary Chapel is located just east of the 405 freeway,
Westminster exit.

There will be maps at the service for directions to the Papageorge residence.

People have asked about possible charitable donations in Dottie's name. Pam
and family discussed this and they feel Dottie would want us to send some
donations to either the Humane Society (you know how she loved animals!!!
Couldn't turn one away!), or Juvenile Arthritis (her granddaughter has
arthritis). Both of these are worthwhile organizations.

Pam Pieson's mother

Just got word from Region 21 that Pam Pieson' mom passed away last night.
The funeral is being planned for Saturday and I will pass along the info. as
I get it.

Information from International...

Here are a few things that the International Board of Directors announced at
their recent meeting (March 8-9):

-- The Board enthusiastically agreed to hold the 2007 International
Convention and Competition in Calgary, Alberta, Canada.

-- As recommended by the Education Direction Committee, the Board
acknowledged that there are 10 wild card quartets eligible each year for the
international quartet semifinals, and agreed not to substitute additional
wild card quartets if a quartet withdraws from the contest, effective with
the 2003 international competition in Phoenix. This decision will make the
quartet contest experience more enjoyable for the audience and more palatable
for the judges by potentially reducing the length of the contest.

-- The Board established a Director Education Coordinators standing committee
to oversee present and future director education. The committee will create
learning opportunities and tools for all directors, and oversee and update
the Director Certification Program.

-- The Board reviewed member input from surveys and correspondence regarding
dual membership. Based on the results, the Board responded by implementing a
dual membership policy allowing members to join more than one chorus in the
same region. Policy remains the same allowing members the option of competing
with each chorus of which they are members, as long as the choruses are not
competing in the same contest.

-- Effective immediately, the Board voted to change the required number of
members to charter and recharter to 15 members (from 20 members) plus the
director. Members who are members of more than one chapter will be counted
for in all chapters for chartering and rechartering purposes.

Ch-ch-ch-changes!

I hope this e-mail will reach a majority of you before your trek to
Bakersfield. Please let your chorus members know, in case they need the
extra time on Friday.

-----------------------------

As was announced yesterday, we have a new Music judge (Ardeth Fullmer) coming
in to replace Lynnell Diamond, who is ill. However, Ardeth can't get to
Bakersfield until mid-afternoon on Friday.

Therefore, the start time for the Quartet Contest has been pushed back to
5:00 (instead of 4:00).

We've now had 3 quartets withdraw from the contest -- Turning Point, Que
Sera, and as of yesterday, License 2 Sing -- so the evening should conclude
only about a half hour later than it normal would have.

The only event on Friday that is impacted by the change in start time is the
meeting with the judges (C&J meeting), which affects only a few select
people. This meeting will begin at 4:00, instead of 3:00. ALL OTHER EVENTS
ON FRIDAY (prior to the Quartet Contest) will proceed according to the
schedule that is printed in the program that you'll receive when you register
.

We just found out that Lynnell Diamond (Music Judge) is ill and is being

Re: [Region11] Digest Number 32

Barbara Adams did a wonderful one for LAST one year, centered on "It takes a

It was touching and inspirational.

Installing officers???

Hi everyone!

It's that time of year, and Harmony Showcase chorus was wondering if anyone would share the names of people who have done an outstanding job as your Installing Officer? and maybe what "theme" they used?

HSC can tell you that Sue Matus does a wonderful "slide show" as her schtick--it was too funny!

We have had Debbie Curtis -- and that was quite a night! Complete with "Puppy Shower"!!!

And while Lisa Kneebone is a little busy this year (having a baby), Lisa did ours centered around our "I Love Lucy" show theme and did a darling job-- she's such high energy, creative and contagious fun!

Thanks in advance!

Monica
