Bolt-in OLED display replacement for K1000 10
Hi all, I didn’t see any guides about this on the site, but thought I would share that there is a bolt-in OLED replacement display for the K1000; no cutting, drilling or other heavy mod work needed. Though you likely will have to solder a new right angle 14 pin connector on the new display, depending on who you get it from. The one I found is the Winstar WEH001602DWPP5N00000. There are variations on the number for the text colors, but the series is the same. Here’s a photo of the stock Seiko display (on top) and the Winstar (bottom): Once bolted in and plugged in, here’s how it looks on my K1000: Some semi-fiddly things to note are that on the 14-pin connector for the display, pin 3 (which was the display contrast adjuster on the LCD) is not used, and neither is the purple wire power tap from the transformer for the backlight. I taped over the transformer end of the connector that joins the display wires to the ones from the transformer, to ensure no risk of shorts before wire-tying it down. Since I did this, I learned that Winstar has a new model of this same display, WEH001602DWPP5N00100. The specs look to be the same. The above model number is for white type on a black background, but other colors are available too. Hope this helps, David

A Power Supply Question
Hello to the list, My friend who's working on my 100GX found a resistor tied int at the power jack and going to a spot on the power supply board. Any of you folks who do board level work on these have any idea what this might be? The resistor was baked enough that the color codes on it were unreadable. He clipped the resistor out, thinking he'd find some reference to it on the schematics, but he didn't. He's not going to replace the caps in it before he knows what kind of harm this might bring, so anyone got any ideas about this? Nicole Sent from my HAL 9000 in transit to Jupiter

Schematics for a 1000GX 3
Hey, folks, I know these are on the site, but my friend who's working on my busted GX says they're difficult to use because so much is so small. Anyone know of another source for these schematics? Nicole Sent from my HAL 9000 in transit to Jupiter

Ensemble Grand MK3. help! 4
Hi. I have an Ensemble Grand, MK111 which has given up the ghost. I live in Bulgaria, and cannot find anyone here to service it. It is of course massively heavy, and I don't fancy moving it, unless it is going to somewhere near who I think might be able to fix it. Is this even the right forum for the Ensemble series? I have other Kurzweil products, so I thought to try here as I am a member of this forum. ( K1200 pro and PC3 and other rack modules.) I can try to fix it myself, however, I shall need to access the main board, but am unsure even how to do that, any help or direction gratefully received. regards and Happy New Year. richard brown napravobg@... 0897 690033 (inside BG) outside ; +359 897 690033 BG (Bulgaria)

K1200 Professional for Free 5
Hello, K1000-K1200 people! My name is Aaron and I live in the Boston area. I have a K1200 professional keyboard my dad bought from a music store back in about 1990. It's been used for noodling around and early piano lessons, but I am now seeking a new home for it. The bad news: Two keys are non-responsive. There were about 5 nonresponsive keys and I was able to get most working by cleaning the contacts, but two remain. My sense is it's probably something simple beyond my technical ability. Additional bad news: I am missing the knob from one of the two sliders and the integrated music stand. The good news: The rest of the keys, the screens, the program control buttons, all work. I would prefer not to send this off to the landfill, especially as the issues seem likely fixable, so I am offering it for free to a good home. I am in the Boston area, very near to Waltham, and would be happy to connect with anyone who would like to have it. I can deliver it within reasonable distance, meet part way, etc. I am happy to discuss. My apologies if this isn't the appropriate venue for such an offer! My best, Aaron

Velocity Layers 8
Hello, folks, we might have discussed this before, but I don't remember an answer. I seriously doubt, based on the EPROM chip capacity, that Kurzweil used 128 discrete velocity levels in each of their samples -- there's probably a set of them at specific MIDI velocity levels, and everything else is handled through volume and some other parameters. So, that said, anyone know how many Kurzweil used, and at what approximate break points they set those different layers to trigger? Any direction will be greatly appreciated -- I need to sample some of the sounds from my GX, Pro1, and Pro2, and I want the best fidelity possible, but I also want reasonable file sizes. Oh, and David E, do you possibly have a patch list for the GX bass patch sysex you sent me? I'm still having difficulty getting it to show up in my GX's. New member, old member; Upgraded my units; Questions 22
Hi everyone! I just joined this group, but I was a member of the old K1000,net group. This Xmas, I pulled out my 4 1000 modules, and completely refurbished them I now have upgraded the displays to LED, and have upgraded three to Pro 1, Pro 2, and Pro 3. Very easy upgrade, In fact, 2 of my 1000HX units were fully socketed, so I pulled the 23 button face from my 1000AX+, and upgraded the HX to a Pro 3. Now for the difficult part. I've successfully upgraded the 1000AX+ to a Pro 2 unit, and transplanted an 8 button faceplate onto it. But, I am urgently looking for the following parts, which were damaged on the original AX+ unit. --Power button (switch replacement was easy to find, but the nice matching button is gone....) --2 black push buttons for the front panel. These have the escutcheon surrounding the center square. I'll take a full button panel, if someone has one. Otherwise, I'll need to go through the painful process of splicing in some square cap tact switches, and maybe use Legos for the button caps. (They almost fit...) --Volume knob. Is it my imagination, or do these things fall off pretty easily? --Rack ears. I know, everyone is looking for these. If someone has a dead unit, I will gladly make an offer. Also, can anyone confirm this: The OS chips are paired into Hi and Lo bytes, so U21 and U32 form what is labelled the PRO PGM (or the PX+ PROG PRO), and U22 and U33 are paired into the SETUP for each unit, which I suspect contain the name list of the patches, and the patch ROM addresses. Anyone know anything about this? Also, this: PRO 3 8 button upgrade Instructions on K1000.net reference some difficult hardware modifications to get the 8 button Pro 3 to work. But, the description or file describing the process does not seem to exist. Anyone successfully upgrade an 8 button unit to Pro3, and what are those hardware modifications to get it to work? Thanks. Suggested "first steps" for new users 4
Hi all, We've had a K1000 since about 2018 but haven't really dug into the manuals too much (we figured out how to peruse the presets and just enjoyed playing those). I did get familiar with k1000.net and obtained manuals from there. I'd started to read the "Kurzweil K1000 Keyboard Musician's Guide" (K1000MG.pdf) here and there, but not in earnest until recently. When we got the original K1000 in 2018, the seller did tell us that it had been upgraded to some degree, but didn't know the details (and after having done some digging in k1000.net, I don't think in retrospect that we would have understood them at the time anyway!). I remember being a bit puzzled how the manual seemed to indicate a program range up to 127, but I was seeing things in these "100", "200", "300" and "400" ranges, with a lot of repetition. I did find program lists on the site and I did some manual verification of what was in the original keyboard from 2018 (see below). Recently I got a K1000 SE from one of the list members here. It needs a new volume slider (and maybe some other fixes; TBD) and I'm looking to correctly identify it. I've been revisiting the original keyboard as well and am wondering if I've been reading the wrong manual! In my notes for the original keyboard, I have this written down: Engine: v5.32 Setups: v5.10 I have a hand-scrawled list I must have done several years ago, starting from "000" (which says "No Prg Assigned") up to "099" (the unit skips over "100"), then "101" to "163" (this one says "Tuning Note/Click"), then it skips over "164" to "200", then "201" to "299" (it skips over "300") then "301" to "363" (skipping the rest through "400" similarly as before", then for "401" to "493" it just says "(not found)" for each. After "493" it goes back to "000". I have another note saying "Verified to match the "Pro 1 Sounds" list." I might do a similar exercise for the newly-arrived K1000 SE, but I would like to make sure I read the correct manuals. I note that the K1000 SE came with a few bound volumes; sorry for the painful detail here, but I wanted to reproduce the title pages, as I don't believe these particular volumes appear on the "Manuals" section of k1000.net: First one: Musician's Guide Kurzweil K1000 SE Keyboard By Ralph Jones Gary Davis & Associates Updated and Amended by Romeo Music, Inc. (at the bottom is the KMS address block) Second one: Musician's Guide Kurzweil K1000 SE II & SE II Extended (address block) Third one: Version 5 Addendum Musician's Guide Kurzweil 1000 Series Synthesizers With Version 5 Software Would it be helpful to add these to the PDF files on the "Manuals" page, or, if anyone is familiar with these, were they superseded by files already available there? Finally to the actual point of my post here: I got the idea to provide a kind if "first steps" procedure for someone who acquires a 1000-series instrument of any kind. Considering the upgradeability of these instruments, what it says on the front panel from the original factory instrument may belie what lies under the hood. I'm imagining such a procedure would tell you to press some sequence of buttons to get info like those "Engine" and "Setups" numbers, and maybe some other kinds of identifying info. Hopefully having that info, it could be mapped into a table that would include a mapping to the proper manuals and maybe even the proper program lists etc. Is this a silly or infeasible idea? Apparently our original 2018 K1000 is in reality a "Version 5" machine - I had no idea what "v5.32" really meant until I got these new manuals when the K1000 SE showed up the other day! That is probably more due to my ignorance in properly digesting what is on k1000.net, but I'm wondering if there's a way to provide a bit more direct guidance for total noobs. I'm feeling I should forget reading "K1000MG.pdf" or "K1000ProgRef.pdf" and instead use the new ones that just arrived... Any thoughts, suggestions, etc. appreciated! Thanks, Chuck

Kurzweil K1000 Special Edition for free 26
This was something my late wife had an attachment to. None of us know what to do with it. I'd rather someone got some use from it rather than sending it to a landfill. There are also some manuals that we have for it. Some of the sliders scratch and pop as they are moved - a common thing for sliders. I will expect the recipient to assume shipping costs. I'll weigh the various parts so we can estimate the shipping if anyone is interested.

A Nonfunctioning 100gx -- Something new 9
Hello, folks. So my repair guy tapped on the relay, it thunked, and he plugged it in and pressed the power button. A capacitor right by the front power button got hot and let all its smoke out. This can be a couple of things -- that cap was needing replacement due to age, so it failed when power got into the system. Or there's something else wrong that overloaded that cap. There's also the biggest list of possible reasons -- something I don't know about. Anyone got any ideas? Nicole Sent from my HAL 9000 in transit to Jupiter

Upgrading the 1000Series Modules 5
Okay, for those of you who are new to this, or have forgotten, here's the way this works. David Brown got Kurzweil to give us the right to burn update ROM chips as long as it wasn't for profit. That's why there's so much binary file stuff on k1000.net. I don't know anyone with a chip burner, so I don't have a resource for it (David did all of mine). The upgrade from an SX to a Pro2 is worth the effort, because you get some wonderful sounds. And the 5.x OS versions have some useful features. If not, or they are garbled nonsense, have your tech pull the socketed IC’s and clean the pins. I had to do that on my 1000 SX. Troubleshooting a 1000GX 8
Hello folks, I've been around here for a very long time, and I love these machines (Better love them, I have thirteen of them). My one black sheep 1000GX has been a problem child -- first it didn't boot. I had a friend resolder the P1 connector. That got me the other common bane, black boxes fever. Back in the dark ages that meant the relay hung, so I sent my friend to the k1000.net site, but he didn't find a good picture of where that relay is. He tapped on what he thought was the recalcitrant relay, but there was no joy from that. Anyone know anything else that gives the screen black boxes? This is a non-upgraded 1000GX -- I want to get it working before I worry about finding someone to burn me an OS5 upgrade. Anyone got any ideas (other than giving it to someone so they can anchor their boat, I'm not doing that). Nicole Sent from my HAL 9000 in transit to Jupiter

Upgrading Kurzweil 1000 PX: Should I touch the soldering iron to the two solder pads of JP03?? 14
The soldering iron would melt the two solder pads (at least somewhat) which seems like a bad thing, but would simply dripping solder wire down on to the two solder pads even allow proper binding/adhesion between the solder wire and solder pads?? :/ Does anyone have experience with this?

What year was the Kurzweil Pro 2 released??
There is very little info online about the Pro-2. I found a review that suggests the Pro-1 was released in 1990, but nothing on the Pro-2. Does anyone have any info on this (ads, flyers, reviews, etc.)? Link to Pro-1 review: https://www.muzines.co.uk/articles/kurzweil-k1200-and-pro-76/7528

Upgrading Kurzweil1000 PX to Pro-1: How to cut the etch of JP04??? 11
I think I destroyed the circuit board by cutting too deeply the etch of JP04. In the guide it says not to cut JP04 too deeply- but it doesn't say why: There is no text on the screen of the Kurzweil 1000 anymore, and I think it can no longer access the OS EPROMS, also I cut deep enough to expose some coppery bits. Please be careful cutting and don't make the same mistake I did. :( How would I avoid doing this again?? Does anyone have experience upgrading a 1000 PX?

Embossing from K1000 5
Hello everyone. I have joined this list after this morning upgraded my Kurzweil 1000. It has been several years since I used this application. Between my last use of K1000 and now, I have installed an Index Everest embosser. In setting up the properties for K1000 to properly print to this, I notice three choices for correctly forcing new pages. Form feed, vertical tab and skip lines. K1000's default are 40 characters per line, 25 lines per page. These can be adjusted. There are no settings for binding space and number of blank lines at the top of each page and page number position so I presume the embosser just looks after those. The setup is Windows 11, and I use the supplied Index driver which is networked. Experimenting of course, but if others have found the configuration which works - I'd be pleased to learn about it. Thanks. Vaughan. Vaughan Dodd Vdodd001@... +6421 784 856

Public Service Announcement - 开云体育 reverification emails 4
Hello folks, I received this email recently from the 开云体育 tech folks, and wanted to make sure I put an announcement out for folks! I'll just paste it below, but basically 开云体育 is having to re-verify some users' email addresses due to one of the email servers being blacklisted as a "spam" server by a security provider earlier in the month. In order to fix that, they're requiring some (but not everyone, it seems) to re-verify their email addresses. I looked through the members list here and we have several folks who need to complete this process ASAP, so I wanted to get a message out to you all. Email from 开云体育 (bold emphasis mine): ---- You are receiving this email because you are an owner or moderator of one or more 开云体育 groups. We are in the process of reverifying some of our users and we wanted to make sure you knew what was happening and why. For more detail about this, please visit the Reverification FAQ, at /static/reverifyfaq On Saturday January 13th, 2024, an anti-spam service called Spamhaus labeled one of our email servers as a spam sender. This caused any email service that uses Spamhaus to stop accepting email from our server. Because of this, we began a reverification process and sent out reverification emails to a subset of our users on Sunday January 14th. Spamhaus lifted their block on Monday, January 15th, 2024, but we need to continue the reverification process. You can see which, if any, of your users are affected. Go to the Admin section of your group and look at the Members page. Next to each user's email, there may be a badge with the letters RI or RS. RI means the confirmation/reverification is in progress, but has not been completed. RS means the confirmation/reverification has been successfully completed. Here are the next steps in the reverification process: On Sunday, January 28th, group emails to people in the RI state will be disabled. Messages from moderators and login link emails will still work. Until February 11th, people will still be able to reverify themselves and the RI and RS badges will still show up in the Members page. After that, members still in the RI state will be removed from groups. The activity log entry will be Membership - Member Removed, with the added reason of reverification failed. For domains where no reverifications happened, no invites or direct adds will be permitted going forward. If there is a valid person on one of those domains, they should contact [email protected] to have the domain ban lifted. We apologize for the inconvenience this process may cause, but it is necessary to ensure that we are able to continue delivering group email reliably. Thank you for using 开云体育. Best Regards, The 开云体育 Team ---- Please let me know if you have any questions! Hope y'all are doing well in the new year. Thank you, Max Thompson
