Re: K1000 EX Ensemble Expander upgrade

I haven't totally finished recapping the PSU and replacing the battery. But the new eproms did work!?
?
I will say it was a bit awkward at first because the buttons on the EX aren't labeled the same. But after I put a piece of masking tape over the old labeling and wrote the correct parameters there weren't any issues at all.

Re: K1000 EX Ensemble Expander upgrade

Thanks for the recommendations! I ordered the pro1 upgrade set from eprom pro and located the jumpers to change. I read about the power supply solder fixes and now will look into a replacement capacitor as well!
?
I did not realize pro3 was an option for this unit. Maybe I'll get on that in the future!

Re: K1000 EX Ensemble Expander upgrade

You will need 6 programmed Eproms to fill out the sound banks, and 4 programmed eproms for the OS.? You will not need to remove any of the existing sound bank chips, if upgrading to a PRO2.
?
At the same time, I would replace that large power supply filter cap, pull the battery and replace it with a CR123 holder.
?
I currently provide a kit to replace the battery, and provide the 10 programmed chips to do a full upgrade to a PRO2 unit, or the 16 chips for a PRO3 upgrade. I also have a kit to replace the LCD unit.
?
If you upgrade to a PRO3 unit, you will need to pull U51, U54, and U59.?? You'll need 12 Soundbank eproms and 4 OS chips.
?
Your board is all socketed, so you can do either upgrade.? Both upgrade will require you to make sure the jumper is set.
?
The upgrade is relatively simple, if you go slowly.? I've upgraded 4 units to PRO1 (not possible with the SX/HX/GX/AX/EX motherboards), 4 units to PRO2, and 3 units to PRO3, so reach out if you need more help.
?
Keith Lee, near Chicago!
?
PS:? If anyone actually purchased the soundblocks to upgrade any of the PX/SX/HX/AX/EX units, I am looking for the official IC Chip?????
??????? numbers for the ICs in sockets U52, U53, U56, U57, U60, and U61.? The numbers will be A00x00_-0_.? If you have a PRO3 with?
??????? factory EPROMs, I'm looking for the official IC numbers for all socket posiitons.? Thanks!

Re: K1000 EX Ensemble Expander upgrade

Here are some photos of the inside of my k1000 EX pre-upgrade. I know this is an old thread. I had a lot of trouble finding info about this specific module and would like to add more info to help others in the future. I'll add more once I get the materials to do the upgrade.

Re: K1000 EX Ensemble Expander upgrade

I can take some today! I'm working on one too. Very grateful to find this thread as I was hearing mixed info on whether or not EX modules could be upgraded.

Re: Bolt-in OLED display replacement for K1000

This OLED is not from a US source but from China:
?
?
If the URL doesn't work you can search Aliexpress.us for 3256807774480278 or WEH001602A.
?
It may as well be a US source as I ordered it on 1/14/25 and it arrived today 1/24/25, 10 days later. The Aliexpress store is "Rock Optoelectronics Technology" and the OLED is listed as:
?
16x2 COB OLED Character Display 3.3-5V SPI Serial Parallel Port Driver WS0010 Scandinavian European Cyrillic Russian Font
?
Item description:
?
WEH001602A Winstar 16x2 COB OLED Character Display 5V power supply Controller WS0010 new and original
?
My cost for the green one with shipping and "tax" was $20.60 and I paid via PayPal. Other colors are available as well.
?
It looks just like the one that David posted and much to my delight I found it to be a 100% drop-in replacement for the original Seiko M1632 LCD. You do have to solder on a double-row 90 degree header just like the one that is on the Seiko. No need to worry about pin 3, it's not connected on the WEH001602A.
?
Here it is on my K1200:

A Power Supply Question

Hello to the list,
My friend who's working on my 100GX found a resistor tied int at the power
jack and going to a spot on the power supply board. Any of you folks who do
board level work on these have any idea what this might be? The resistor was
baked enough that the color codes on it were unreadable. He clipped the
resistor out, thinking he'd find some reference to it on the schematics, but
he didn't.

He's not going to replace the caps in it before he knows what kind of harm
this might bring, so anyone got any ideas about this?

Re: Schematics for a 1000GX

Thanks, Dennis. I'll point that out to him. I want that GX fixed so I can sample the hell out of it and then get it upgraded and load the bank of bass sounds David Etheridge sent me -- this will be my bass machine in my rig.

The schematics on <> are in pdf format so can be expanded. When doing so the letters are not as readable as one would desire but I have used them successfully. Did I miss something here. Not familiar with kurzweil.com.

Hey, folks,

I know these are on the site, but my friend who's working on my busted GX

another source for these schematics?

Re: Ensemble Grand MK3. help!

Hi Jerome..

Nothing comes on, no speaker sound, no LCD display, no headphones..

I think leaking or swollen caps, and look for charring or combustion evidence on the board,,

I read here on an expander topic that tiny thin wire soldered to connect any broken tracks etc.? That is do-able.

Very many thanks for the tips and advice.

Re: Ensemble Grand MK3. help!

The group home page says "Other Kurzweil products welcome include [...] EGP, Mark III ?& IV [...]" so I will try to help here.
?
Kurzweil's web site distributors list () has Gema Music in Sofia as their Bulgarian distributor.
Gema Music's web site, ,? (per Google Translate, at least) says "We provide warranty and post-warranty service."
?
If that's no help, the owner's manual is online:
The owner's manual strikes me as being rather sparse. I came up empty searching for a service manual online.
?
Does the power LED come on? If not, the problem could be the AC adapter, an internal fuse, or (less likely) the power switch.
If the power LED lights but no sound comes from the speakers, does the headphone out work?
If the headphone out works, but not the speakers, the problem is likely with the audio amplifier.
?
If neither speakers nor headphone out works, my next step would be to open it up and start looking for bulging or leaking capacitors, any area on the circuit boards with corrosion, charring, or melting, or an internal battery that has discharged or leaked.
Take lots of photos as you disassemble! Use small containers to keep groups of screws together.
?
I also found an interesting page () by a person who couldn't get the sound generation to work but salvaged the key bed, control wheels, and associated circuitry as a MIDI controller.

Ensemble Grand MK3. help!

Hi.
I have an Ensemble Grand, MK111 which has given up the ghost.? I live in Bulgaria, and cannot find anyone to service it.

It is of course massively heavy, and I don't fancy moving it, unless it is going to somewhere near who I think might be able to fix it.

Is this even the right forum for the Ensemble series??
I have other Kurzweil products, so I thought to try here as I am a member of this forum.?

T manage to fix it myself,? I shall need to access the main board, but am unsure even how to do that,

any help or direction gratefully received.

regards and Happy New Year.

Re: K1200 Professional for Free

Note folks that there's a shipping method that may be cheaper -- I've had things shipped via Greyhound in the past (I got my Prophet T8 from the pacific northwest that way, for example). Everyone goes to the USPS, UPS, DHL, and FedEx as defaults, but other ways exist.

Re: K1200 Professional for Free

I'd like to point out that this keyboard with a little TLC would make a great first unit in a chain link setup of several Pro1 modules. There's something nice about being able to hold down the sustain pedal and do a full run of the keyboard on a piano or harp sound and have no note stealing.

I wasn't told to disallow for sale posts here, which is why I okayed the message.

I'd figure out a way to get it myself if I didn't already have a fully loaded K1000 SE MkII Extended -- it reaches a point where 'boards have to give way to modules, unless of course you're Rick Wakeman.

I applaud you for wanting to keep it out of a landfill (or e-cycling!).
If you were within 100 miles or so of me, we'd be talking about where to meet.
I do this sort of thing for fun, currently waiting on parts for a Korg Triton Extreme that was in somewhat worse shape.
The $200+ for shipping would kind of take the fun out of it ;-) There is a K1200 Pro listed on Reverb right now asking $450, to give an idea of what it'd be worth fixed up.
I don't think there's anything wrong with posting this here; you might also try the Facebook group Vintage Synth Repair And Mods ()

K1200 Professional for Free

Aaron Pikcilingis

Hello, K1000-K1200 people! My name is Aaron and I live in the Boston area. I have a K1200 professional keyboard my dad bought from a music store back in about 1990. It's been used for noodling around and early piano lessons, but I am now seeking a new home for it.
?
The bad news: Two keys are non-responsive. There were about 5 nonresponsive keys and I was able to get most working by cleaning the contacts, but two remain. My sense is it's probably something simple beyond my technical ability. Additional bad news: I am missing the knob from one of the two sliders and the integrated music stand.
?
The good news: The rest of the keys, the screens, the program control buttons, all work. I would prefer not to send this off to the landfill, especially as the issues seem likely fixable, so I am offering it for free to a good home. I am in the Boston area, very near to Waltham, and would be happy to connect with anyone who would like to have it. I can deliver it within reasonable distance, meet part way, etc. I am happy to discuss.
?
My apologies if this isn't the appropriate venue for such an offer!
?
My best,
Aaron

Re: Velocity Layers

Yes, exactly. It would be far too much to hope that they use consistent key ranges across different samples, but yes, that would do great things for reducing the amount of memory the samples take. IIRC, these are sixteen bit, right? Or are they twelve bit?

I'm so looking forward to having my sounds again, especially things like the Krellian Music patch from the 1000GX, it's wonderful for textural stuff.

Subject: Re: [K1000-K1200] Velocity Layers

From my reading, the SoundBlocks have no notion of "loudness" setting. It's just a wrapper for a collection of samples (sound file IDs).
For example, the "Choir" soundblock has 13 samples:

SoundBlock 9 594 Choir
baseid=1 headers=13
SFH ID Root LoNote HiNote
SFH 1 43 G2 F3
SFH 2 45 A2 C4
SFH 3 48 C3 D#4

...

and the program "Ext Dyn Choir" has 5 dynamic ranges that use the same sound file IDs (samples):

KeyMap 32 356 Ext Dyn Choir
lowkey=31 nkeys=62 G1 to G#6 n/oct=12 pitch=1900 G1 ct/key=100
flags=0 $00 (no atten per key) (no tuning adjust)
soundID=9 $09 'Choir'
nlevels=5 timbres 0 0 1 2 3 4 4 4 fff->ppp
Level Dynamics nKeys Lo Hi SBid SBname / SFid
0 fff ff 20 G1 D3 9 'Choir' 1
0 fff ff 3 D#3 F3 9 'Choir' 2
...
Level Dynamics nKeys Lo Hi SBid SBname/ SFid
1 f 17 G1 B2 9 'Choir' 1
1 f 3 C3 D3 9 'Choir' 2
...
Level Dynamics nKeys Lo Hi SBid SBname / SFid
2 mf 15 G1 A2 9 'Choir' 1
2 mf 2 A#2 B2 9 'Choir' 2
...
Level Dynamics nKeys Lo Hi SBid SBname / SFid
3 mp 11 G1 F2 9 'Choir' 1
3 mp 4 F#2 A2 9 'Choir' 2
...
Level Dynamics nKeys Lo Hi SBid SBname / SFid
4 p pp ppp 9 G1 D#2 9 'Choir' 1
4 p pp ppp 3 E2 F#2 9 'Choir' 2
...

So I think the Keymap object is playing with the attenuation here.

To sample the instrument, I'd look at the SoundBlocks, see the key ranges, then find the simplest Keymap that gets you the full coverage.
