\\well done
As nostalgia or coincidence I'm about to shovel out and go to work in Waltham right past & next to the old Waverly Oaks Waltham Kurzweil Music location (Kurzweil Edu Sys still there). In the mid late 80's as then a EE graduate I desperately wanted to work for either Tom Scholz or Ray's Music Business in Waltham as 1st choices. It seemed no one was looking for a green but eager engineer as it was another one of those recession like downturns that happen in 4-6 mini cycles...or so it seems. Instead I kept the momentum of my senior project 16 channel vocoder in a home spare bedroom studio somewhat mothballed still today, joined the AES (went to BBN meeting back in the day), developed & got a class D amp patent 20 years ago that turned more hobby than business startup, and stuck to dabbling in devices, luthery, and a back room studio. As a day job as an employyee and consultant intermixed I focused on consumer, industrial, and mostly medical devices. Instead of audio my 1st gig out of school in Cambridge was physiologic diagnostics signal processing with other MIT spin offs in the area (the founder, my 1st boss, mentor and friend was Ray K's room-mate at MIT small world). So back on topic and why I'm here - To this day I still have my K1000SE (upgraded to all but the 2nd sound block as I recall), several rack modules, and had an Atrari Mega ST for library management having picked up the later right at the Waverly Oaks office giving me a brief peek into the engineering going on there. I've decided during the covid furlough at home which became layoff to start turning the bedroom studio, now a storage, back into my tiny studio and practice room - it was always good therapy to bang on the drums, play some guitar, get lost in effects, and fire up good ole kurzweil or oberheim modules. So I'm guessing that old non gig'd gear will need recapping of electrolytics, tube amps will need all sorts of TLD, and kurzweil key & rack boxes will need some display work if not firmware upgrades. Did I horde any or enough windowded 27CXXX parts? Will my Needham's Parallel port programmer even work on anything today? Can I even find it or otherthings not thought about in so long? Well hopefully I can work on that over the next couple of years now back to work but wanting to keep working on such side projects. Hopefully enough people are still here to share what they learn as i wil also try to do. Cheers & thanks for keeping this going. Bill

Thank you! P1 5
I think this is what I’m going to do. Just solder the leads straight on. My units are from 25-30 years ago. And NOW I’m getting ready to repair a couple. Of course, the temptation is to “restore” it because “someday I might want that to plug-in”. After all “if it was good enough for the factory”, but, like you said, it was for the exigencies of assembly, not end-user advantages. But I can’t think of an overriding reason to have a disconnect there. And I can think of several reasons to have hard-soldered leads – a proven technique of reliability for many years. L. I've had severe cases where heat from the pins has melted the connector. When that happens, I completely remove P1 and solder the transformer leads directly to the board. This also eliminates the original problem, but requires a bit more work than the fix above. The connector was for ease of assembly in the factory, anyway, so there's nothing lost by removing it. Hope this helps someone! Regards, Brian

K1000-PX Plus and K1200 need TLC in 2021. 3
I have these two Kurweil's that are less than perfect functioning. The keyboard has a stuck at full velocity key as well as inoperative 1/4 incj outputs. The rack K1000 PX Plus is not powering up any more so discouraged by that happening. I am asking here for moral support and migration of Kurlwin to rejuvenate the life. I still have 3.5 inch Object Builder as well as all the MAC and Midi interfaces to be tested. I used to run Kurlwin under Linux Wine but have not tested lately as Roland interface is on Roland Juno 106. Let's play here again, ok ? Lee

ObjectEditorX 5
I just learned from a fellow K1000/1200 group user last week that there are issues using ObjectEditorX with Big Sur (OS11). On doing some research I discovered that Apple have completely revised CoreMidi - first time in 20 years!! This was clearly done to encompass the new MIDI2.0 specification, but introduces no backward compatibility with OS10. As I firmly belong in the dark ages, there is no way I am going to be able to maintain this product going forward. So after much thought I think the only solution will be to publish the source code, and let some other adventurous sole work out how to include the new CoreMidi library. So my question to the group is where should the source code reside? Also any courageous sole willing to dive into XCode/Objective-C/CoreMidi to make it work with macOS11? Thanks David

1000PX - not booting 70
Belated Happy New Year! Finally spent a bit of time on my non-functioning 1000PX. Here's where I am so far... The unit comes on, but does not boot. All I see is black blocks on the upper row of display. Tried hard reset and test mode. Nada... Checked solder joints on bottom of power supply board where transformer connects. All looks good (I remember fixing these a while ago). Backup battery had been replaced at that time also. Showed a solid 3v on meter. Re-flowed the solder, all is tight, no cracks, voltages are present. Power transformer secondaries give me 16-32 and 7-14 volts. Power supply is working. DC voltages to motherboard are + and -12v, 4.3v and 5v. Seems like pretty standard values. Went through and exercised any socketed ICs in their sockets. I don't have a chip puller, so didn't pull them all the way out to clean pins. No change, so I put it back together... Looking for any info or suggestions from the group. Many thanks! -- peace, Frank Dickinson 90 East Productions Our "lockdown" videos ( https://youtu.be/He6Q2RCW3SU )

1000PX - display backlight 6
Hi group! What's the current wisdom re: replacing display or backlight on a 1000 series module? I see some options on ebay, wondering what everyone's experience is: https://www.ebay.com/itm/271132479687 https://www.ebay.com/itm/233203448746 -- peace, Frank Dickinson 90 East Productions Our "lockdown" videos

Hello all! 5
Ah, a user group, nice! I have a 1000PX, which I bought for the piano, but realized had a lot more to offer. I still haven't managed to wrap my head around editing it though. I wish there was an editor for Windows. I guess you all have seen Espen Krafts video on the 1000PX? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WcA8vNj93_E //Lennart

Serial mac MIDI
Hi, I completely agree that the MIDI transmission on serial port is superior to that on usb. Many years ago I had tested all serial and usb midi interfaces on the market, measuring jitter, and invariably the best results were on midi serial port interfaces. Old macs are a great value when you think to MIDI trasmission best Luca Il 28/07/21 21:45, José Juan ha scritto:

Just been out of the loop too long and can’t answer my own question. I’m building a Kurzweil Rack with some of my modules. This particular rack, a slant face, will be Two K2000RS and Three K1000 (pro2 x2 and one pro3). Probably a Korg M1r. Plus room for a couple of other things. I want it to be self-contained and self supporting, as it were, so I’m reserving 2U for a computer and another 2U for an interface. A single midi controller will rule them all :-) Here’s my dilemma. What software? What hardware? What I have right now is 20+ year old Opcode Galaxy software. Very capable, I suppose, but it runs on an aging G4 Mac. It has full editing for both K1000 and K2000 with vintage graphics. I’d rework a G4 to be2U rackmount. The interface would be an Opcode Studio 5lx. 16x16 midi i/o. Again, very capable despite its age. It would handle many patches and be able to transfer them through the convoluted KW system to get them working. BUT, is there a PC based solution? Or a Linux based solution? Geez, even a Raspberry Pi or Android solution?? It has to work without moving cables, too. Enough I/O for every port to have its own. Of course, our own Dennis Spanogle has Kurlewin – a Windows based solution for the k1000. But what about K2000? Come to find out, I don’t even have a PC based midi interface. Need some opinions. No answer is wrong. Stay the course with vintage gear all around? Go get the newest whiz-bang? Or is there a secret and special combination I’ve not seen? (very likely, this one) What? L. ._,_

piano legit 3
For years, my K1000 PX has been my go-to piano. I mean for years like since 1988 when I bought it new for something like $1900 from Chuck Levin Music when I was on the east coast. Piano; Piano and strings; piano and bass; etc. It’s been that good and still is. Anyway... I’ve been looking at the idea that it might be time for another piano. Sort of a standalone piano-plus module and take the K1000 (and my other several KW modules) back into heavy duty synth programming exploiting that 4 layer architecture. Looking at the Dexibell module. Here’s one: https://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/VIVOSX7--dexibell-vivo-sx7-sound-module Anyone around here with experience on this thing that also has experience on our beloved K1000 modules? I’m just a little shaky on making the switch. L.,_._,_

Device Button Beaconing 5
Hey folks, I'm talking with someone who is working on making a display reader for Kurzweil instruments accessible on several platforms. To this end he needs to know if pressing the buttons on the module or keyboard sends data out through the MIDI Out. What he needs is for someone to use MIDI-OX, press the buttons on the device, (probably best if this is one with the full numeric button array for completeness) and save the MIDI-OX log file, assuming any MIDI data is sent. Shoot that file to me and I'll get it on to him. Anyone out there who could do this? I would, but right now my modules and keyboard are mothballed. Nicole Sent from my HAL 9000 in transit to Jupiter

K1000 net website up for grabs 4
Hello group, It has been almost 30 years since I started the K1000.net website. I am no longer able to keep it updated and/or active so it is time for someone else to take over. A couple of options. 1. The website is hosted at blue host. And the domain name and hosting is paid for a couple more years. I would suppose it would be possible to transfer the domain and account ownership to a new person, but I have not verified that process. 2. The entire code and file system can be sent to someone and they can upload to the ISP of their choice. The site is almost entirely simple HTML and will run on almost any ISP at a low cost. Any takers? Dennis Spanogle Kurle (K1000 editor MS-DOS) Kurlwin (K1000 librarian MS Windows) , K1000.net (the K1000 archives website.) ,

K1000SE not booting 2
Hi everyone, I just bought a K1000SE that won't boot. (It also has a sticker that says "Extended ROM"). I've opened it up and I have the multi-meter and soldering iron ready. :-) The program and setup ROM tests come up 'ok.' The RAM test gives error 07, plus some other stuff. The Battery test gives error 11. (I Presume it needs a new backup battery.) Just after some guidance that might accelerate my troubleshooting? I'm about to re-seat all the IC's and connectors, check for bad solder joints and test power supply voltages. Thanks, Michael

K2000SE Aftertouch
Hi everyone, In march I posted about a K1000SE that wouldn't boot. I managed to fix it - details below for anyone who's interested - but now I've discovered that the aftertouch isn't working. I've scoured all the schematics (from k1000.net) and I don't see anything related to aftertouch. (Maybe I missed something.) Can anyone help? If there's an upgraded schematic anywhere, I'd love to see it. (Regarding the boot problem.... An electrolytic capacitor close to the SRAM chips had leaked and corroded a very faint track from the OR chip feeding the write-enable SRAM input pins. I wired around this and everything is back to normal. (In the process of troubleshooting I also replaced all electrolytics across all boards, resoldered the P1 connector and installed a new SRAM chip.) Best regards, Michael
