Upgrading the 1000Series Modules

Okay, for those of you who are new to this, or have forgotten, here's the way this works.

David Brown got Kurzweil to give us the right to burn update ROM chips as long as it wasn't for profit. That's why there's so much binary file stuff on k1000.net. I don't know anyone with a chip burner, so I don't have a resource for it (David did all of mine).

The upgrade from an SX to a Pro2 is worth the effort, because you get some wonderful sounds. And the 5.x OS versions have some useful features.

That’s a tough one. I don’t know anyone that does that. Maybe someone in the group may know someone.
Did it have sounds prior to the current issue? If not, or they are garbled nonsense, have your tech pull the socketed IC’s and clean the pins.
I had to do that on my 1000 SX.

Hope it works out!

?So, what I would do if this were mine, is, replace all the Caps including the ones on the Power Supply board. Check the diodes for any defects such as reverse voltage. Diodes will give a reading in only one direction e.g. anode to cathode. Also replace the output relay, since it kicked, it’s sticking inside.

?Probably one of safety caps avoiding sparkles when switching on. They can die this way after years and sometimes even cause the fire. Just replace it, it will be OK. Another one can be somewhere in PSU primary circuit, replace it as well.

Hello, folks.

So my repair guy tapped on the relay, it thunked, and he plugged it
in and pressed the power button. A capacitor right by the front
power button got hot and let all its smoke out. This can be a
couple of things -- that cap was needing replacement due to age, so
it failed when power got into the system. Or there's something else
wrong that overloaded that cap. There's also the biggest list of possible reasons -- something I don't know about.

Anyone got any ideas?

I have a chip burner, and have done them before, however it is in storage in Hawaii and I am not in Hawaii.?

You should purchase new chips, if possible. I also have the eraser, and it does work, if the existing chips have a window under their sticker.

Checked eBay, burners are around US $120, eraser would be additional.

Chips are probably available on eBay as well.

Sorry I can't help and do the burn for you, but this is the way forward I would offer.

Heather

Thanks. I don't know if David Brown managed to get the eight button Pro3 upgrade for the GX, but from what I've been told there's nothing in the Pro3 that isn't available from the Pro1 or Pro2. This means, for now, this'll be the last upgrade I'll need to do. I'll keep looking for someone who can do the burn, and of course I'll buy new chips if I can find them.

Nicole,

I have both a programmer and chips; however, I live in NE Ohio, and am currently dealing with the aftermath of the recent storm events. If you're not in a hurry, I can get them programmed for you after the cleanup is done.

Brian

That would be fine. First I need the module working, but with luck that'll happen, so there's no rush.
