Re: How lenient are rangers with backpackers who are overdue their exit date?
You should be able to extend your permit exit date before your trek. Either on Recreation.gov or when you pickup your permit. Where are you starting/exiting from? I usually pad my exit dates just in

Lamarck col holds a high angle snowfield on the North lake side. When we went in Sept it was possible to climb around on large block talus. The descent to Darwin lakes is talus/sand and was dry when

Re: Skurka’s Over the Top route SOBO
Hi, I will be travelling SOBO mid-august and probably take the suggested Piute pass detour. Seems like a big stretch for one day though. I understood that you can hitchhike between the north and

Hej Jim, Now I'm in Bishop. I summited on Thursday 6/13 a few minutes before sunrise. Not much snow left. Nothing on trail until past Guitar Lake. I cowboy camped at the pond above Guitar Lake, also

Forester Pass had still nearly a mile of continuous snow on the north side last Saturday, so traction aids were comfortable while not really necessary. The chute could be crossed on a foot wide part

Hello Henning/Rest I habe two more questions: 1. not sure which route you did (sounds like too NOBO JMT) but are there any conditions on the (SOBO) JMT that one should be aware of?

Re: Mt Whitney west side switchbacks in mid-July this year and best guesses for JMT NOBO conditions in July-August.
Thanks. Doesn't look the like the west side will be a problem. Based on those pictures, I don't see a need to even put my microspikes in my resupply bucket for Horseshoe Meadows. Plan is to enter at

Re: Help planning JMT section hike logistics
I did that section from the west side in 2018. It makes FAR more sense from the west side. And permits are usually available and easy. Transportation is the big issue. You don't say where you are from

Hej Cristina, it is not my first trip in the Sierra, my BV500 has crossed the pond more than once. I had bought it at REI on 2019. You can make a reservation before online, then they hold it for you
