Re: How lenient are rangers with backpackers who are overdue their exit date?
Thank you. I have updated my exit date to be 3 days later than my original. On Fri, Jun 21, 2024 at 12:58 WanderingJim via <jimjmt2020=[email protected]> wrote: On Fri, Jun 21, 2024 at 08:59 AM, Jingbo Ni wrote: |

Re: Skurka’s Over the Top route SOBO
Hi, I will be travelling SOBO mid-august and probably take the suggested Piute pass detour. Seems like a big stretch for one day though. I understood that you can hitchhike between the north and south lake but still a long way. Shifting through forums it seems that I could spend a night before and after switching from one trailhead to another, so before leaving north lake and after entering south lake. is that so? - where is it advisable and allowed to camp over night, before proceeding? Is there any new standard by now? - lamarck col also should be possible mid-august? depending on snow conditions of course. I don't plan to take crampons or ice axe with me.. thx Am Fr., 14. Re: Mt Whitney west side switchbacks in mid-July this year and best guesses for JMT NOBO conditions in July-August.
开云体育Hej Jim, Now I'm in Bishop. I summited on Thursday 6/13 a few minutes before sunrise. Not much snow left. Nothing on trail until past Guitar Lake. I cowboy camped at the pond above Guitar Lake, also free of snow. After that there were small snowfields where you either followed a boot track or went around off-trail. The long switchbacks were essentially free of snow, with 2 or 3 patches where you had good boot tracks. After trail junction one place where the trail was blocked and one had to do some easy rock scrambling around on a length of less than 50 ft. Two longer snow fields on the gravel before you turn right for the final approach. That was it. I enclose some photos; will be available for questions tomorrow. Re: Mt Whitney west side switchbacks in mid-July this year and best guesses for JMT NOBO conditions in July-August.
Forester Pass had still nearly a mile of continuous snow on the north side last Saturday, so traction aids were comfortable while not really necessary.
The chute could be crossed on a foot wide part of the trail, will be snow free trail soon. Henning -- Diese Nachricht wurde von meinem Android Mobiltelefon mit Mail gesendet. -- |
Re: Mt Whitney west side switchbacks in mid-July this year and best guesses for JMT NOBO conditions in July-August.
开云体育Hej Cristina, this year I hike the PCT, with a start at the Mexican border in April. I hike nobo as far as I come. Will be at Tuolomne Meadows around July 1st and then continue over Sonora Pass to the Lake Tahoe area and further. I both receive packages which I had prepared before the hike here in the US, sent by a friend, and buy food locally. Special condition on the JMT this year is the destroyed bridge over San Joaquin South Fork. See / My 2019 nobo JMT hike is discussed on the website in my signature: / This includes resupply options. 开云体育Hello Henning/Rest?I habe two more questions: 1. not sure which route you did (sounds like too NOBO JMT) but are there any conditions on the (SOBO) JMT that one should be aware of? (Snow/flood/closures/reroutes/Critical river crossings due to too much water) 2. where did you restock on food? Did you send it there yourself from the us or did you use one of the services?? Will probably buy for the first part in San Francisco or bring it by plane and then send through a service to MTR. kind of a lot of days of food to carry ? Not sure if red is helpful by getting 1-2 days of food from the shop there??? Thx Cristina Von meinem iPhone gesendet Am 18.06.2024 um 04:37 schrieb WanderingJim via groups.io <jimjmt2020@...>:

Re: Mt Whitney west side switchbacks in mid-July this year and best guesses for JMT NOBO conditions in July-August.
Thanks. Doesn't look the like the west side will be a problem. Based on those pictures, I don't see a need to even put my microspikes in my resupply bucket for Horseshoe Meadows.
Plan is to enter at Walker Pass (with a ton of water), resupply at Kennedy and Horseshoe Meadows, then go up Whitney. Exit from Onion Valley. I'm? still debating if I should just continue up the JMT from there after resupplying down in the town. Prepping resupply buckets (got plenty of extra food on hand) just in case I decide push my luck. My boss won't like it if I do. :) I'm more likely to try to take a Zero Month and then restart NOBO in Mid August. :) |

Re: Help planning JMT section hike logistics
I did that section from the west side in 2018. It makes FAR more sense from the west side. And permits are usually available and easy. Transportation is the big issue. You don't say where you are from or how you are getting to the trail though, so here are the options:
1) Drive to VVR over Kaiser Pass. This is a long adventure no matter where you are. The final 20-25 miles are rough, but regular cars can do it as long as they don't have low ground clearance. But the higher your ground clearance the better.? It takes at least an hour to do the final stretch from where the road narrows. I go to VVR often, and when I decided I needed a new car I took Kaiser Pass into account and bought a Subaru Outback, which is the perfect car for that road. 2) Contact High Sierra Shuttle (via VVR's web site) and arrange for a shuttle from Fresno. Cost varies depending on how many people are on that route that day, but if you're the only passenger it will be about $230. Once you are at VVR, you can get to the trail by hiking about 7 miles, or by? taking the ferry to the other end of Lake Edison and then hiking an additional 2 miles. There is a great campsite near the ferry landing, on the lake, with a picnic table and large fire ring and bear boxes.? In addition, there are some great tent sites near the JMT junction, just across the Mono Creek bridge. The VVR ferry runs twice a day, (roughly speaking) after breakfast and before dinner. You end this JMT section approximately at Muir Trail Ranch. From there, it's a 5 mile hike to the east shore of Florence Lake. You have options here too. You can hike another 5 miles around the lake, or you can take the Florence Lake Ferry, which runs many times per day.? Their web site is down at the moment so I can't see the options. There's also a phone at the landing where you can call for pick up. Once you get to the Florence Lake landing, you can get picked up to go back to VVR by the High Sierra Shuttle. You have to arrange for that, so bring your garmin and have their contact info in it. They make at least one run a day to Florence as long as they know you are there. So bottom line, it costs some money, but by using the shuttle and the ferries you can cut down your extraneous hiking down to about 7 miles total. |
Re: Tarp or tent
开云体育Hej Cristina, it is not my first trip in the Sierra, my BV500 has crossed the pond more than once. I had bought it at REI on 2019. You can make a reservation before online, then they hold it for you up to 2 weeks on the selected shop, if you fear that they run out of stock. Cowboy camping: it was the only time I did it. Was ok, at 11700 ft / 3500 m, temperature still +8°C past midnight when I started. I just wanted to leave all my stuff and the tent at Crabtree Meadows, but do the first 4 miles / 1000 ft elevation gain in the evening before. Did you fly it in with your luggage? Or did you buy in the us? I’m not sure what’s best? Thx Cristina How did Cowboy Camping work for you? 开云体育Hi Christine, you may consider to buy the tent in the US? - I got my Durston Xmid pro1 for the PCT delivered to a friend in the US, but a hotel address or PO General Delivery (check that this PO offers General Delivery) may work, too.
