Anyone successfully triggering a SDR switch using their FT-857?
I have purchased this switch: Antenna Sharer, SDR Transceiver... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08L4YSVJG?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share It is powered by 12v and uses a ground signal to close the relays and disconnect the SDR while the radio is transmitting to avoid overloading the SDR. I've tried a few configurations with no luck. I'm currently using a digirig for cat control and audio pass through. I've tried using pin 2 and three of the cat cable but the radio doesn't send ground when transmitting. I've seen the mfj used to make a cable that went into the radio and broke out of connection to activate their switch. Does anyone know how that works or does anyone have any ideas as to how to get this working? This is the MFJ cable https://www.ebay.com/itm/173822382668?mkcid=16&mkevt=1&mkrid=711-127632-2357-0&ssspo=9pFDOgtdSl-&sssrc=4429486&ssuid=WqHpYHhZTly&var=&widget_ver=artemis&media=COPY I have used a splitter to split the 8-pin cable so I have a breakout. I just don't know what pins they would have used. I can solder the wire to the 3.5 mm connector for my switch. I just need some ideas as to how to proceed. Thanks in advance for all the help

Another Step 4
Very good evening. FT-857 is connected to N1MM+ and working with CAT control, frequency, mode, ok... I am 75% happy. I have just one USB-to-Serial port cable (CHK340K) LD-C100 generating COM3, the only one in my LENOVO Windows 10 notebook. This will be the last question about this situation, and I am a real dumb with computers. By the way, I am not FT-857 regular user. Is that possible to share this LD-C100 cable to control a CW computer generating signal? Or I need to find a kind of USB-to-CW (?) cable to use with a another USB in my notebook? If not, I will take a little keyer for my "possible" I/SP9NY portable operation next April... Thanks a lot... New to me FT-857D low TX power on USB/LSB CW works just fine... Bad mic? Something else? 5
Good evening everyone, I've got a new to me FT-857D it has worked great on 2m/70cm and I just got my general ticket. I'm running a 40-10 EFHW through a ATU100 tuner. With the power set to 100 I'm only seeing 30 watts at most on USB/LSB on HF. If I send CW using the microphone I see around 85w output. It seems that I'm getting little to no modulation with voice on sideband. Is the microphone on it's way out or gone? The only variable I have in play i have my digirig hooked up via the din cables.

How can I use the 8 pin CAT connection to activate a SDR switch? 2
Looking at the diagrams I tried using pin 2 (circled in red) to activate the switch. I was under the impression it was grounded while the radio was transmitting. I checked with a DMM there is no continuity between the wire attached to pin 2 and the chassis of the radio. Pin 3 shows continuity on the DMM. I'm using a splitter so I can run my digirig and the switch. I verified proper operation of the switch by manually grounding the wire to the power harness of the SDR switch. I also verified multiple times that the wire I'm using is pin 2. Am I doing something wrong ? Is there a better way? The switch is looking for a momentary ground while transmitting.

FT857 + FC-40 + CAT 14
Good Morning I will try to use FT857 next trip to Italy, in April. Trying to buy a FC-40 to make it with a LongWire. Notebook with an USB cable will control radio. And this is my doubt now... How can I connect FT-857 with FC-40 and keep it together CAT control from a notebook? Usually working with N1MM+. Thanks a lot... 73 DX from PY2NY (but I/SP9NY in April)

FT-857d WILL NOT TURN ON. CYCLES ON/OFF ABOUT ONCE PER SECOND CONTINOUSLY 6
Before I send this back to Yaesu...again...I thought I'd throw this out there. My FT-857d had been installed in my shack with the faceplate remotely mounted and the radio connected to a 70A supply along with all my other radios. One day I powered up the shack and the 857 would light up, relays clicked then it turned off. It would run this cycle forever if I let it. So I looked for possible faulty connections. I cleaned the RJ-11(?) on the back of the faceplate and put it back together and it worked, for a week. Then the same thing. After multiple attempts to clean the jack again, I ended up bending the pins. So now I'm thinking it was a coincidence that it worked after I cleaned it the first time. I have 2-3 of every cable for the radio. I opened up brand new cables and nothing changed. I cleaned the fuses. Connected the radio to 2 different batteries for power. Nothing. So I sent it back to Yaesu suggesting it could be an issue with the RJ-11 jack. I only sent back the face plate because when I tested the face plate on a friends radio, the radio didnt work either. Also because I am cheap and wanted to keep the shipping cost down. After a while I got the radio back and they said they had replaced the RJ-11 jack. The radio behaves the same as always. Cycles on and off at about 1 second intervals. I get lights only. Nothing on the display. Today I noticed something else. If I continuously turn the VFO dial while its booting up, it will stop cycling while I'm turning it. It will stay lit up but the radio never really comes on. I've pretty much exhausted all the possibilities of an external connection issue. With all the extra cables and power sources I have, I'm pretty sure thats not the problem. I'm not able to test the control head on another radio at this time. My friend has packed away his radio to move. I'm going to send the whole thing back to Yaesu, unless someone here has a miracle solution. Thanks Mark K3MRK

FT-857 Head and other parts available 5
I have an FT-857D with a bad processor. Yaesu wants way too much to repair it. The head unit and display, the VHF/UHF power amplifier board and HF amplifier board are all good and working. Anyone interested in any of these can contract me at: ka8vit @ ka8vit . com 73 - BILL KA8VIT / W8COD

Q1049 replacement 5
I was running backpack portable with my 857d and I think my antenna may have been too closely coupled to my cw key. Anyway, the cw key no longer works, and the Keyer mode will only send dashes. I am going to check for continuity between Q1049 pins 19 and 20 (dot and dash) and the chassis key jack, and I’m hoping that I didn’t fry the Q1049 dot input! If so; Is this a component that can be replaced? -- N9SS, Dave

ALC problem 8
Hello, My "old" non D FT857 exhibits an ALC problem: The output power is unstable and the ALC bars follows this variation. This behavior is present on all bands, including VHF and UHF. I've tested with external audio modulation in SSB and FM modes. I've also tested with internal 1750Hz (repeater opening tone). I've not tested, for the moment, in CW mode. At all RF output level, between 5 and 100W, these variations are present. Have somebody an idea where to search to correct this instability ? Thank you for any proposal. My best 73, Rudi, HB9ARI

True, but bigger, heavier, power hoggier, and without a detachable front panel. I have both for different reasons. 73, Kent K9ZTV On 2/18/2025 3:14 AM, Andrew Lenton wrote:

ESD. A static discharge will wipe out the EEPROM. 24LC128 right beside the microprocessor. I have done it myself on the bench here on a Cold Feb Afternoon. It is winter. Dry. Carpet in a vehicle etc. Snap. Just my guess. The IC is very inexpensive, but you have to be able to take it off and put another back on. Reset the Radio and program back your settings. As for your issue, it could be as simple as that . Wouldn’t worry about it unless it starts happening every week. And as far as Chirp goes. That is a long shot blaming it on that. ?? LOL. I would need evidence. Never heard of that before. ! Ronnie VE3NLS Innovative Circuits Electronics Repair Centre #2040 30/31 Side Road West Oro-Medonte, Ontario L0L 2L0 E-mail ron@... Random factory reset 13
While driving yesterday and monitoring my 857d, it randomly performed a factory reset without any input from me whatsoever. I contacted Yaesu and they asked if I used CHIRP to program it and they indicated that can cause problem, even years later. While I did use CHIRP to program, it was about 5 years ago and have had no problems since then. Has anyone else ever experienced a random factory reset like this? Any other potential cause? Tim K6TW

Heil Traveler FT857 pinputs? 2
I have a Heil Traveler that I used with my ICOM-706 (since sold). Worked fine there, but made up a wiring adapter for the FT857 but no TX audio. Everything else fine including RX audio, PTT, up and down. The only thing I can imagine is that the mic element needs power to run thats not being supplied. Yeah, I know I could just buy a HSTA-YM adapter but I dont want to buy it just to troubleshoot and there is some satisfaction in making my own. Should I be doing something with that 5V sitting on pin 6 of the FT857 RJ45 connector? Mike WB1AAT

blinking display on power up 6
I've had variants of this problem where on power-up, the panel either does not come up, or flashes on and off. Today the computer was up before the radio, but that may or may not be a factor. The power button may not even work and I need to disconnect the power supply. I can always recover full operation by disconnecting antennas, digital cable, and CAT cable. Seems like all must be disconnected but there might be some combination that also works. After disconnection and reconnecting the power supply, press of the power on button and the radio comes on normally and works normally for hours afterwards. Any ideas?
