Internal Tuner Proposal

I have an FT-857D and an FT-897. I have been using the FT-857 for portable operation and use an external ATU-100 tuner when required.
?
?I do miss an internal tuner so I an thinking of constructing and mounting a ATU-100 board in the bottom battery compartment of the FT-897. Here is a link to the ATU-100 tuner kit:

?
Has anyone tried installing a tuner such as this one? that compartment? I use external LiFePO4 batteries so the internal batteries have been removed (they stopped holding a charge years ago).
?
Looking forward to the warmer weather to operate portable.

Hmmmm - I'm unsure that this is a good idea without some additional steps. My concern is that you are adding something that can generate heat into a rather small case where the manufacturer has not already made allowances for this quantity of heat generation. I am especially concerned where the SWR is high, as I would expect more heat to be generated.

Are you going to add a small fan or the like to help dissipate any additional heat???

Thee ATU-100 does not dissipate much heat. Also keep in mind Yaesu had an optional swotching power supply that would mount in that space and dissipate much more heat than the tuner.

Hi Mike,

?

Using the battery compartment in the 897 should be easy.

?

I have made a couple of the ATU-100’s and installed one inside a Codan 8528 very successfully. There is a lot less space in the Codan than in the 897.

?

The only problem will be where to mount the display and the control buttons – maybe remove the battery switch in the top and mount them there?
