New 11" EdgeHD 52
Hello, I'm just new to this forum. I've had just one evening to use my new scope, but a couple of issues have come up that I would appreciate any comments on. The weather won't be good for a few more days, so I have some time to consider solutions btwn now and then. Astrophotography is the reason I purchased this scope Mirror shift, or??? I get increasingly long star trails with increasingly long exposures. How great, if at all, is mirror flop, once locked down? It would be good to know if I can assume this is not an issue, and so can direct my attentions to the other possibilities. My polar alignment is excellent, so is my balance. Focus. I discovered that focusing is perhaps incredibly easy. Take a dimmish star, move it to the edge of chip and focus it there. Any little bit out of focus quickly and dramatically elongates the star one way or the other. As apposed to focusing in the center where you have to judge more or less bloated. However, focusing this way I noticed that stars midway had red and blue slight comma type flaring. Not good. And finally, is there a source for a variety of adaptors, that start with the 3.29 16tpi thread. Celstron seems to only offer the large or small T adaptor. Thanks, Keith

Killing or removing a cockroach 11
I recentely attached an old Crayford focuser to my C-8, Last night when setting up I noticed a cockroach crawling over the inside of the corrector plate. Anyone have any ideas on how to extract, kill, remove the cockroach I have some gel-bait based on boric acid but I'm not sure it's a good idea to use the near coated optics. Should I I remove the corrector and clean the corrector and mirror as a precaution?

New C14 EdgeHD! 5
Well, I finally pulled the trigger on a new HD. I have been using the "old" model C14 for years and thought it was time for an upgrade. At any rate I have one question for those out there with these models. What is the best way to cool these beasts? It was obvious last night when I tried to image for the first time that it will NOT cool itself! I ordered a "Cool Edge" from Starizona but didn't try it yet. Are these effective? What are other alternatives. I really don't want to ship it off for fans to be installed unless I have to. Thanks! Brian

Possible outgassing - questions 9
I am just assembling information at this point on possible outgassing in my one and a half year old C14 Edge. I have some "haze" on the primary mirror. I am not sure if it is water residue or petroleum outgassing haze. I am still investigating. I am thinking about getting into the scope and cleaning it myself. If this might be outgassing residue, then what cleaning agent would be recommended? Also, if this is outgassing, then will it continue to outgas throughout the life of the telescope? I am aware that people change the greases inside but I am not sure if I want to attempt this. Thanks in advance for any replies. Thomas

Alignment of corrector plate to secondary mirror for EdgeHD1400 3
Hi, Seems like the alignment of corrector plate to secondary mirror is critical to the optical performance of the tube, and how can I tell the correct alignment for EdgeHD1400? Two weeks ago when I was trying to unthread the retaining ring from the secondary mirror of my EdgeHD1400 to use HyperSar in the field, I found the whole secondary mirror assembly unit was rotating against the corrector plate because it was loose. I did not remember how many revolutions they were as I kept rotating it in the dark till I found the problem, but the orientation must be already different from what it used be. Going back home, I carefully removed the corrector plate from the tube and then unthreaded the secondary mirror assembly unit from the plate. I saw a magic mark at the side of the secondary mirror (one line), and also two marks adjacent to each other at the inner side of the center hole of the corrector plate. Does it mean the mark of secondary mirror should be positioned between the two marks drawn in the corrector plate? I found the guideline for the normal tube and that EdgeHD version may depend on the year of manufacture. http://www.celestron.com/c3/support3/index.php?_m=knowledgebase&_a=viewarticle&kbarticleid=1655.&group=iframe Thank you for your advice, Yasushi

Focus Shift on HD after the Meridian Flip 9
I have my 14" EdgeHD for over 2 years now. It originally had a problem with not holding it's collimation and had to be sent back to "C" where they "span" it - much better after that. I use it mostly for DS imaging with 0.7X focal reducer and Moonlite focuser. Everything seems to be very tight and sturdy. I focus it first crudely, lock the mirror then use Moonlite to tweak it. It all works fine even for long slews, until I do the Meridian Flip. After that focus is gone, collimation too is worse (though still usable). It usually is off by 100 steps or so. Any idea what can cause such a shift? Thank you for any thoughts. Ian

Moisture on primary mirror - frosty morning 12
This morning there was heavy frost here in New Mexico, 22 degrees F, and while observing Jupiter at dawn I had to use a hair drier frequently ( on low setting, gently ). When I ended my session and was replacing the front cover lid I noticed that there was moisture on the primary mirror inside the scope. I never noticed any moisture before on the primary mirror all through last year and I used the scope a lot. I keep the telescope always in place outside under a telegizmos cover. It is never inside. Is this common to have moisture develop on the primary mirror? See moisture at arrows in pic. http://www.heliotown.com/sct_dew_2519.jpg I wonder if something changed ( unsealed or something? ) over the course of the year with my C14 Edge HD? Thanks in advance for any replies. Thomas

C14 Edge secondary 25
Hi All, I have recently had the opportunity to work with the Mauna Kea Visitor Center here on the Big Island of Hawaii. They have a C14 Edge equipped with Hyperstar that we use for live viewing of DSO's using a Lodestar X2c and Lodestar Live software. We only do this two nights a week, so we install and uninstall the Hyperstar each night. I noticed the other night that the secondary lens mount is loose on the corrector plate. When installing the Hyperstar unit, it continues to turn even though it is seated in it's mounting ring. I also noticed that there is a bit of play relative to the corrector plate. I suspect this is not right. Is there a threaded retaining ring that holds the secondary mount to the corrector plate? Is it as simple as holding the outside ring and tightening the inside retaining ring. Also, is it important to have the secondary rotated in a certain position relative to the corrector plate? Thanks for any help on this. Don

Recommended dew/frost heater system for C14 Edge HD ? 5
I am seeking recommendations for a dew/frost heating system for my C14 Edge HD. Last year during my Jupiter observation campaign I used a hair drier but it was kind of noisy in the middle of the night. Thanks in advance for any replies. Thomas

Focuser upgrade for C14 HD ? 5
I looked through group messages back to 2013 but didn't see many messages about upgrading from the stock C14 HD focuser. Does anyone have recommendations for a good focuser for a C14 HD that will be used primarily in planetary imaging? Thank you in advance for any replies. Thomas My research already: I saw a Cloudy Nights thread about people having problems with the Feather Touch micro-focuser: http://www.cloudynights.com/topic/456360-c14-edge-feathertouch-micro-focuser-problems/ I looked at the Moonlite focuser site but got a little confused with all the options: https://focuser.com/products.php I see the JMI electric moto-focuser for the C14 HD is around $179.

T-Point with CGE PRO - I'd like to ask some questions! 2
I would like to discuss some basic aspects of T-Point with the CGE Pro mount....any users out there? I've got 24 days left on my evaluation period and I haven't been able to find anyone to answer some basic question for me before i purchase the add-on. Mostly works but I don't know how NexRemote figures into the set up and I don't know if Park (skyx) or Home (nexremote) should be used in the night to night recalibration. Thanks

mirror locks for a C-14 11
Good Morning, I have a 10 year old Celestron C-14 SCT that I have recently mounted on a Software Bisque mount for the purposes of high resolution imaging of the moon and planets, using a Skyris camera, and CCD imaging of Deep Sky Objects. I am in need of a way to lock down the mirror to prevent image shift during image acquisition. I¡¯d greatly appreciate any suggestions as to where to purchase an accessory that will enable me to lock down the mirror after focusing. Thanks very much in advance. Clear skies, Kevin Dixon www.magnificentheavens.com
