Tube Stiffeners
3
Hi Folks, I bought a C14 in February and shortly after (2-3 months), the tube stiffeners shed their dark coating (becoming quite white) and deposited a white powder all over the inside of the tube. I had to send it back to get factory serviced. They fixed the problem, but claim it was a first. Has anyone else had this happen or know what might have been the cause? WayneG

[C14] Re: Tube Stiffeners
Ah yes, I kmow of them. So those are tube stiffeners. Thanks for your description. One of those tube stiffeners fell off once while I was replacing the stock dovetail with a Losmandy dovetail. I had to reach through the secondary opening in the corrector to retreive it and put it back in place. I'd better take a look at mine to see if they're shedding. - Dan

Tube Stiffeners
My dovetail is OK, I guess, but I've thought about getting the Losmandy. Sometimes after tightening my screws, I find that I can go back and tighten them further, like the dovetail flexed or something. Why did you get the Losmandy and how much better is it; what mount do you use it on? Thanks. WayneG your reach put

[C14] Re: Tube Stiffeners
I purchased the Losmandy dovetail so that I would have somewhere to insert shims needed to make the OTA orthogonal with the mount. I'll be getting another dovetail for the topside so that I can mount aother equipment on top of the OTA. I'm using a Paramount GT-1100S. - Dan

Tube Stiffeners
Seems like were the only ones on the airwaves, sort of a private conversation. I think the others dropped dead, I do not hear any breathing! :^} How much off did you have to shim to get it right; just curious--- I use a Losmandy HGM-200 with DSC's, tried the Gemini and didn't like it. WayneG can go it; aother

[C14] Re: Tube Stiffeners
After I purchased the Losmandy dovetail I didn't get a chance to do any shimming before... Unfortunately, I now don't have my C-14 in my posession at this time. It's been out of my hands for almost three months now. Another member of this mailing list has it. I'd very much like to get it back too. By this time now, I'm honestly and sincerely feeling quite frustrated. I hope I get my scope back soon. It's a private matter though, so other than mentioning the above, I won't go into the details. - Dan

It was originally designed to be used remotely from the internet. There are some problems (understatement) with that type of operation and I'm strongly leaning toward exclusive on-site use until I have a much better understanding of all the hardware/software issues in remote use. I'm a long-time amateur astronomer who was lucky enough to already work for the school district (a school psychologist, believe it or not), so I got the nod when the previous director (and observatory founder) decided to go back to the classroom. I'll post more soon. remote operation

A few issues I've run into: Balancing the tube on the paramount. The RA axis is no problem thanks to the counterweights on the other end. What have people done as far as adding counterweights to the tube itself to balance out the camera/filterwheel/reducer, etc. on the other end? I have the tube slid as far forward as possible in the mounting rings, and it's still way overbalanced on the rear end. Also, what are people using for pointers/guidescopes, and how do you have them mounted? -John John Rummel darksky25@... http://members.home.net/darksky25/ The great tragedy of science -- the slaying of a beautiful hypothesis by an ugly fact. - Thomas Henry Huxley

[C14] remote operation
Good question! I don't use tube rings. I have mine on a Losmandy dovetail. I have the OTA pretty far forward on the dovetail. Hanging off the corrector end of the dovetail I have placed a Losmandy dovetail weight set. At ten pounds, it's still not enough. I'm looking for ideas here as well. As a "finder scope" I have an Orion Short tube 80 (80mm f/5 refractor) with a PC-23 video camera hanging off the back. I obtained the ST80 used for $100. A finder scope doesn't need fine optics. - Dan

For planetary I use a Televue 2.4x powermate. That's about all the magnification the planets can take. - Dan

Hello, I may acquire a second hand C14 and that is why I joined this group. I would welcome advice, experience (good or bad) and any other practical info you would like to share about this big SCT. Thanks, Geert

Hello Geert, Welcome to the C14 group! The biggest concern of any C14 is optical quality! If you have the chance to check out the optics before buying...do so! I have seen more good 14's than bad, just be careful! The second concern is due to the weight and setup time for this wonderful beast. Make sure you want to go thru the trouble of setting up and taking down each time. I myself observe at least 20 times per month and I have to setup and break down each time due to I have no observatory. I believe this is the greatest sct due to it's size and yes....one person of average health can put the "basic" visual scope together within 10 to 15 minutes. What I can see with this scope in Las Vegas with deep sky objects is astounding compared to smaller sct's or even larger dobsonians! If you decide on this one or another C14,I know you will have fun with it. Clear Skies! Robert Davidson

Pics of the Newer C-14

Hi Folks, It is my understanding that a few years back, Celestron had changed some things on the C-14 OTA. These being in particular, the Rear Cell, and the scope was evidently put on a diet, shedding some weight in the process. I don't beleive I have ever seen one, and I'm interested in seeing what these new C-14's look like, especially the back, and side views of the scope. Can someone please post some pics in the file section of their scope if it is a newer one? It would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Mark

Hi bruce, Very nice pictures! Do you got any pictures the c-14 rear focus gear-mecanick, so it possible to see how it works close to the back of the mirrow..? It would be nice, if you could download here too. regards Soeren Jessen Copenhagen Denmark good Celestron particular, seeing views

C-14, got it.

Hello, after a few months of negotiation with the former owner and thinking, I got the second-hand C-14. It checks out good mechanically and optically as far as I can see after just a few nights use and startesting. You can see a picture in the Photos section in my album. The OTA is a black one, about 6 years old. I think I'm gonna like this telescope! Clear Skies, Geert Vandenbulcke
