New ham groups, also new pricing structure for groups
The next message is about some new groups I created to have a general-purpose discussion group for some brands of amateur radio equipment and radios before groups.io's new pricing structure goes into effect Jan 81, 2021. It is a long message, so I just wanted to give you a heads-up. I cross-posted it to all the groups I manage. I will be looking for moderators for the new groups and even some of the established groups, so if you're interested in helping, please email me privately about this. For the rest, please read my next post. It's a long and detailed one. New ham groups added, new groups.io pricing structure on Jan 18, 2021 (long post, intentionally cross-posted)
First, the new pricing structure for NEWLY formed groups on groups.io beginning January 18, 2021. Basic (free) groups formed on or after that date stay free *up to 100 members*. After that, it will need to be upgraded to a premium group. Premium groups ($220/year) are good up to 400 members, after which a per-member fee ($.05 per month or $0.55 per year) is added to the $220 per year premium group fee. That will bring a burden on some new groups, so I created some more ham groups that may grow, or flounder, but I wanted to beat the deadline so those groups will not be charged extra fees, or any fees, for that matter. If they take off and are useful, that will be great. If they flounder, I might just delete the group if members agree, or if there are no co-owners by the time I review whether the group is worth keeping. If you were thinking of creating a group for one of your interests, THIS IS THE TIME TO DO SO before the new pricing structure goes into effect. If you need help with that, email me *privately* and if I'm not overwhelmed with requests, I will try to help. You must be willing to assume group ownership as I will leave the group after creating it and you've been made a group owner. If you need help getting started with the group, I can hang around for a short while and direct you to documentation on how to run a group. As for the new groups I created last evening, I will list their web addresses below. Please contact me *privately* ONLY IF you are interested in joining one of these groups AND ARE UNABLE to use the join button on the web site or find the join process confusing. I would like to avoid what happened when Yahoo closed their groups and I offered to help people if they were unable to join themselves. I was overwhelmed with requests to help, and I'm sure not all of those were from people who had difficulty joining, so please give it a try yourself first. Go to the site and press the join button on the group(s) you are interested in. Follow the simple instructions and you will be approved. All new members will be moderated for a short time so don't expect to post immediately. There's only one moderator right now (me), and I work for a living, sleep at night, and take naps because of my health condition in late afternoons sometimes. I donate some of my time for community work, am a minister, and have to wisely use my time. But I don't want anyone to not join one of these groups because they find it difficult to join. YOU CAN JOIN ANY OF THESE GROUPS BY EMAIL by sending a message to the subscribe address. Take the web address name at the end of the URL and change it by adding [email protected] to it. For the FT-757 group (as an example): /g/FT-757GX Send an email to this address: [email protected] no body text is required in the message, just the address, but to make your email program happy, you can put the word subscribe in the subject and message fields. These new lists are email reflectors only with no storage (a change that was made almost a year ago by GIO's owner). If I had created them before February 2020, they would have storage. We will work something out for storage if the groups get large enough and have a need for that. I will need moderators for these new groups, and soon after they get on their feet, a co-owner who has some real interest and hopefully experience with these different brands of radios. Contact me off-list if you are interested in volunteering with any of these groups. I will help you out with anything you need to know about how to manage a group as a moderator or co-owner. I will list the NEW groups first, then list the other amateur radio groups I created. Note that most of these are not model-specific and are "general-purpose" groups for a BRAND of radio or a general-purpose group for a type of equipment. I did not create any group for which there already was a general-purpose discussion group for that brand of radio, like Drake and some others. I am not interested in amassing a lot of groups to manage. My purpose is just to see that interes

AT-778UV question 3
I have an Alinco handheld that I can instantly switch between channel mode and VFO without affecting the programming. Can I do the same with the AT-778UV? I've been hesitant to try it because of the hours I've invested in the programming of the channels.

Question about building a code plug for travel
Questions on building first code plug for my AT878UV+. I'm traveling this summer around USA for about 3500km each way. I used repeaterbook search by highway and band and crossed radio reference to remove channels more than 10 miles radius from route and stops. I have both analog and DMR in my csv channel file. These sources seem not to be setup for a vacation travel. I'm currently searching through each DMR channel to get talk groups they allow, I guess. I haven't tried loading into the radio because I was told that the order to import is talk groups, channels, zones, and then contacts for the digital side. Then channels, zones for the analog side. Do I create a different channel for each talk group that specific repeater allows? Example repeater https://www.repeaterbook.com/repeaters/details.php?state_id=06&ID=8035 has 5 talk groups according to https://brandmeister.network/?page=repeater&id=310738 (I noticed inactivity, but using as example) so if I want to scan for activity to signal for help or something, I have to create 5 separate channels for this repeater? What about zones? Should I group them into all 250 zones, a zone for each 14km? And then there is gps ranging with only 16 entries. I am hoping that I can use my local pi-star hotspot and tether to my cellular wifi hotspot to make up for the deadzones zones.

Anytone 500-M
I bought this radio because of the FM CB feature at a two-way radio technician in Troy, Texas. When I bought this unit, the technician also sold a 4 pin Astatic power microphone. I did not realize until I was ready to install it. The Anytone microphone is a flimsy piece of crap. From what I understand, I have two options for taking the adapter route. I don't know whether I need to buy a 4-6 pin adapter for a RCI Ranger-type radio or a 6 pin Uniden and President radio. I love this radio. I would appreciate feedback.

Programming radio 5
I am trying to program my Anytone 878 UV Plus with one analog FM channel. I was able to update the firmware OK through the com port, but I am getting an error: Check Connection. Retry? This is using the same CPS program that loaded the firmware just fine through the same com port. I went ahead and installed the com port driver that Bridgecomm says you can do if you're having problems, and that didn't change anything. I would switch to CHIRP, but it's not listed as a supported radio, and I'm afraid to mess things up even if it is able to download the radio's channel information. Anything else I should try before giving up and trying to figure out how to enter information through the front panel?

New to the group
Hello, I have a D868UV Hdwe Ver 1.00, Firmware Ver 2.30. I programmed it Jun 2018 with a codeplug for Central Ohio ARES operations. Analog works fine, no Digital activity. I am wondering where to find an Operational codeplug and where Color Codes are input as I don't recall, during codeplug review before programming. any mention of Color Codes. I am familiar with analog CTCSS and DCS codes. Any ideas? 73, John kd8rtp

878UV Plus volume 2
When I plug in my Anytone speaker-mic into the radio (I bought the Anytone brand to make sure the plug was correct for the radio), the volume is very low. Besides the volume control knob, is there a setting in the radio that can give me some volume boost? I bought the speaker-mic to make it easier to operate for more than a few minutes, hoping I could clip it to my shirt and hear the other station without having to hold it up against my ear. I have heard that a certain Kenwood speaker-mic works with this radio. If any of you have one that works well and you don't have to hold the speaker-mic close to your ear to hear, I'd like to know what the model number of the mic is and also the Kenwood radio is that it fits (to make it more likely to find one used that fits this radio). Thanks in advance!!! I attempted to post a earlier this morning & I had to shut my computer down due to a threat. So, please excuse me if I posted. I am rather new to these forums. Question #1: I have read the instructions that came with the radio. The one inside the box is not very detailed. So, I went to the source. I am attempting to understand the values of RF gain. Many of the settings tell what the values mean specific to function. For example: "Short press SQ/AQ, until LCD displays stands for SQ/AQ level, the bigger value stands for high squelch level." This example describes what the bigger value does to squelch. However, when I go look in the instructions specific to RF gain, I see: AU, 03, 06, 9-48. I am not fond of AU. However, I attempted to increase RF gain. When I advance the number up to 48, I cannot hear hardly anything on Channel 19. However, if I reduce it to 03 or 06, it works fine. Does 48 represent the highest RF gain? Question #2: I heard that activating "Hi Cut" helps to reduce the static. I thought I read where this also helps to reduce strong skip signals. AnyTone AT-5888UV
This radio appears to be a 2-band knock off of the Yaesu FT-8900. I own both radios. I'm curious if anyone has an AT-5888UV and has experimented with the USB port to determine if remote control (i.e., CAT control) is even possible. Too bad that AnyTone didn't include that as a feature since it makes the perfect radio for digital comms (such as WInlink, FLDIGI, SSTV, etc). I've also discovered that the RJ-45 microphone (QHM-05) isn't your standard analog mic. It appears to support a digitized audio stream (??) and that fuels additional curiosity as to the potential for digital comms. Documentation that I have is pretty sketchy, so I haven't looked much further and thought this board might know more about this particular rig. Comments welcomed. 73 Keit/KI5US

D578 UV2 plus Help Requested
In the spring I purchased the Mobile radio and just recently I purchased the BT01 remove microphone. The radio has worked pretty much flawlessly since purchase. The BT01 however is acting strange. I suspect I have firmware issues as in I need to update the radio. The radio currently has: Firmware V2.04 installed Hardware V1.10 installed Radio Data V1.00 installed Unfortunately their manuals leave a little to be desired (very small print at a minimum) and I am getting old. When I go to the download section of the Anytone web site it is not totally clear which firmware editions go to what it just tells you a version number and never says firmware or Bluetooth etc. so I dont know if I have the correct software installed or not. One thing I have heard is that you can not update the Bluetooth via a PC it has to be an android phone of all things. This is a dumb idea for someone with old eyes in the first place but more than that I dont own an android phone and no one I know does. So how does one get around this? I have been able to pair the handheld BT mic/spkr but I hear no audio on transmit or receive and the PTT hangs on the radio leaving it in transmit unless you press PTT a second time. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Jim

Anytone AT-5189
Hi Folks: Wonder if anyone has a schematic or other info on the AT-5189 mobile radio. I am looking for a place to inject audio directly into the FM modulator, bypassing the mic input and pre-emphasis, a place to pick up raw discriminator audio, and thirdly, confirmation of which of the 2 pots adjusts output power. Thanks in advance! Ramesh, VA3UV

AnyTone AT-778UV max operating voltage - issues at 14v 4
I have an AnyTone AT-778UV (Retevis RT95), and am trying to run it off of a LiFePO4 battery that when fully charged is at 14v. The problem is the radio will not turn on at 14v, and if charged up to 14v while powered on it will power off. If I drain the battery a tiny bit down to 13.9, the radio functions fine. The specifications in the user manual states an operating voltage of 13.8V DC +- 15%. Shouldn't this mean it would work fine from 11.73 - 15.87 volts? Does anyone else have this radio and have issues at/above 14v? It seems like in a vehicle this voltage would not be too unreasonable for an alternator to produce either. Did I just get a bad unit that does not like over 13.9v? https://fccid.io/T4K-778UV/User-Manual/Users-Manual-3731629.pdf (page 33 of the pdf, or page 29 on the printed pages for the specifications section) Thanks for any assistance,

Anytone D578 Pro III 4
Hello all. I have a D578 Pro III and I downloaded the software from Anytone for my radio (they list two different versions). Anyway, when I run either program, when I go to write to the radio it says WRONG VERSION. My radio says its version 1.00. What version do I need for this radio? I also purchased the programming software from RT systems and I have NO idea how to make it work. Money wasted I guess. Any help on this issue would be greatly appreciated. 73' de W2LPC. W2LPC@...
