Re: Latest Firmware

I had this problem the first time I updated the firmware. Tried 3 different Windoze machines before I found a laptop that would work. For this update I went right back to that machine and it worked fine. If all else fails, just try a different computer.

I am feeling really stupid, I cannot find the latest firmware. V1.02E is the latest one mentioned on the site and non of the firmware versions listed is clickable? I hope the latest firmware may help with the noise issues of my device.

I have had my LA-1K and HF-AUTO for about a year now. Overall they work very well, however I have a continuing problem trying to get any digital mode to work without having the amp turn off because of SWR Bypass. Calls and emails with Palstar have not helped, they keep telling me it is my antenna. Unfortunately I only have the 1 and it is a multi-band long wire. I find it strange how I have had zero troubles in SSB mode, even at 900 watts, but it can't handle 100 watts of digital (5W input). If you want to do a lot of the digital stuff I would recommend caution, but for SSB it is pretty bullet proof.

Are you using any special cables between the Amp and the radio?? It almost sounds like it’s a TX relay chatter or bounce.? If you have a foot switch or some way to key the amp with the RCA jack only, try transmitting on a dead band and manually key the amp when the radio keys up and unkey when the radio is finished.? See if that cures it.? If it does, it might be some feedback on the keying line or a relay bouncing when unkeying.? All I can think of.

I tried that. All new factory made high quality cables all around. HF-AUTO shows something between 1.05 and 1.08, amp shows 1.2 or 1.3 (does this in SSB also), and then kicks off, almost always at the very end of the transmission. it has even done it when I turn the "tune" on and off in fldigi.

I have the LA-1K and HF-Auto in operation for ~18?months. A word of caution if one uses either the Key or ALC RCA phono plugs on the rear of the LA-1K. They are only connected to the rear panel circuit card assembly via soldered connections - they are physically isolated from the rear panel, i.e. no physical contact/connection. If stress is placed on either phono plug over time they can break their soldered connection(s) and operate intermittently or fail outright. I had this happen on my LA-1K for the Key plug. I switched over to using the DB-9 interface for the Key input, all is well.

I also have one of the loud fan units - even upon application of power from a cold start. In my QTH, I considered this a small annoyance, the LA-1K was located on the floor in the shack under a desk.

OTA performance - rock solid amplifier. I have 240V mains power, no issues in operating SSB phone at full rated power for hours on-end. Depending upon band and antenna used, I obtain full power with?a drive input between 40W-to-50W. On a few occasions, just with 35W drive. I rarely use with a digital mode so I cannot offer much other than when I have used in digital, temperature rises much more rapidly than SSB phone - but still never an issue.

Palstar recently (earlier this month) posted a firmware update on their website, V1.07B. If your LA-1K has on older version, check the release notes to see if it addresses any issues you may be experiencing.

Re: White screen

The last time I heard of someone experiencing this the issue ended up being their Balun. ?It was overheating and causing the SWR to be unstable. ?It was only with digital because that was the only mode that continually puts 100% rf thru the antenna during transmit.

Its giving you a SWR bypass using an HF-AUTO?? What do the two SWR meters read when it trips?? Try temporarily replacing the coax between the two.

My only complaint about the LA-1K is the noise. The base noise is already pretty substantial with a pretty high pitched hurling sound, but after 4 or 5 FT contacts at 5W input the bigger fans come on and then it gets really loud.

I have an AT2K manual tuner and that thing is just a beast, it tunes anything.

I've had my LA-1K for 22 months.? I run it at 240 volts.? The very first time I put the amp into transmit, it showed 940 watts out with 35 watts drive. I was elated.? One minute later, I did another transmit with the linear, and it showed approximately 400 watts out.? I tried for a full day to get the unit to start working at full power again, but with no success. After contacting Palstar and listening to them argue with me that it was my fault, I was allowed to send it in for repairs.? Fifteen days later, I was contacted by Palstar that a Q-2 chip was replaced, which is one of the finals.? The Palstar owner told me I had over driven the unit, and it was my fault. He said there would be no charge for repairs, but I had to pay return shipping. I had no choice but to do what he wanted because he had my amp, and I wanted it back.?

My experience with the owner made me angry. I did not over drive the unit, nor did I transmit into high SWR, or any of the things he accused me of doing.? What happened was obvious. The amp had a bad chip that died within minutes of my first use. I thought that's what having a warranty meant -- to protect a new buyer from a product malfunction or defect. I shipped it back to them at my expense, and I had to pay for return shipping, which I don't think was my responsibility.

Since that time, it has performed flawlessly.? It is well built and robust.? I have had zero problems since it was repaired and returned.

I will also add that I purchased the HF-Auto two months after acquiring the LA-1K. I love this tuner, and would highly recommend it.

Please note, this is not intended to bash anybody or any product. It's simply what happened to me with my LA-1K.? Obviously, I'm happy with Palstar, or I would not have purchased the HF-Auto afterwards. In my opinion, if you're in the market for a solid state HF amplifier, then look no further.

Re: White screen

I hope that new shoppers don't get the wrong idea....Palstar is, in my opinion the Cadillac of tuners, amps, etc....the LA 1K issues will be solved by them i'm sure...their customer support is unsurpassed and they are nothing at all like? "That three letter company" that we have all come to expect we will have to fix a cold solder joint or remove an extra screw left floating around in the case........Please cut them some slack!
