This fall, I was participating in the WA QSO party (Salmon Run) on CW. The 2nd day, 4 hr before time was up, I was running (as opposed to search and pounce) on 15 and 10M. The 7000 was at full power, WinKeyer USB/N1MM, an end fed HW with SWR indicating less than 1.5. I was making a fair number of contacts when I saw my output drop and saw the temp icon showing in the red. I had been operating fast and furious since the morning - I would guess 10 hours. Ambient temps in the 70s. No problem on day one but it was 50% CW and 50% SSB. Since I've bought this rig in 2007, it has never had this overheating problem. I remember on this group (Yahoo group days) there was a lot of discussion about overheating 7000s but mine never did that - that is, until this contest. The next day, the rig operated just fine - nothing permanent happened. Over the years, I've had this 7000 on two DXpeditions, many hours mobile, many hours portable with no problems. Has it become elderly and finicky about duty cycle? Like me? My question is: Is there a slick way to ventilate an IC-7000 to slow the temperature rise? My "nuclear option" is to sell it and buy a 100W amp for my IC-705. Sort of like selling a racehorse. Any suggestions would be appreciated. 73, Larry W7DGP

Hi all I recently acquired a second hand 7000 with what looks like a fault. It powers on and all front panel controls seem to be ok but when i apply a signal on any band there is no rx indication and no sound from speaker even when squelch is off. Any advice would be much appreiated James

IC-7000: Intermittent Loss of Pre-Driver signal I've owned my IC-7000 for about three weeks, and it's now got an intermittent transmit fault affecting all bands. The fault can be made to come and go when using the back of a small screwdriver to gently impact the PA Unit board in the pre-driver area of the board. When the fault is on, I have TX signal at the gate of Q102, but no signal (or variable signal) at its drain. The DC conditions on the gate and drain are consistently OK - regardless of whether the fault is present. The TX signal at the drain of Q102 is highly variable between the fully working and fully non-working states. Note: All my measurements are being made at the components that I have access to from the bottom view of the PA Unit board. To this extent, I must admit that I'm not making measurements directly on the pins of Q102 itself. I'm currently attempting to isolate the fault, but do not know whether I'm looking for an intermittent open circuit condition, or an AC shunt path from the drain of Q102 to ground. Has anyone here resolved a similar fault? All tips gratefully appreciated. With best wishes Steve G4ALG

Hello all: I just purchased a 7000 with the primary usage being mobile 2 and 432 SSB/FM in various vehicles. All of the memories are tunable. Is there any way to lock them so the frequency can't be changed by an inadvertent knock on the tuning dial? If it's in the manual I missed it. Thanks/ Chris W3CMP

Hello all, I have a problem I'm hoping for help with. Three different times last week, my IC-7K shut off when I keyed and then immediately restarted. I've never previously experienced this in the two years I've had the IC-7K, with daily use (99% CW). The third time it shut down/restarted I was in the middle of a traffic net, which I finished after the rig restarted, no problems, and I turned off the rig as always. And then it wouldn't turn back on. I know very little about electronics, and I'd very much appreciate any thoughts. Many thanks, 73, Colin N2TQT

I purchased the radio with this symptom. Everything seems to work for VHF/UHF. This means the driver is functioning. When I trace the HF signal with a scope past the driver I do see a signal that varies with the power adjustment. This indicates to me that the ALC is functioning. The finals were removed and checked good with a transistor checker. The HF signal through the driver output seems to lose amplitude down the path through the finals and is negligable at the antenna connector. All this through a power meter and a dummy load. I would appreciate any suggestions or help to diagnose the problem. Tommy KF4RWGL

Hi Team I have an IC-7000, transmits well with hand mic both FM and SSB. Transmits Tune tone well. When using JS8CALL, audio is not getting onto the signal, I see no power fluctuation on the meter. I’m using the DATA port, receiving and decoding signals fine. I’ve verified the audio signal is present all the way to the pin on the DATA connector, using oscilloscope. The tune button on JS8CALL software also does not cause modulation (radio does go to TX, controlled by CAT) Now get this: I use the monitor function on the IC-7000, and I hear the JS8CALL tones on the 7300!! So the signal is getting to the radio. Do I have a DATA socket problem?? Carl KO4SSA

It is with a heavy heart that I am looking to sell my IC7000 - This was my NPOTA rig - and it performed flawlessly. Unfortunately I no longer have time for POTA and the radio is just sitting idle. That is no way for an IC-7000 to live. This isn't my only HF rig, just wanting to downsize a bit, and have someone get some use out of this radio. It comes with the original box, manual, head separation cable, MB-105 mounting bracket and the original HM-151. The mic was modified by AB5N prior to my purchase (from a local ham I know). It is the Mic we used during NPOTA/POTA and we had nothing but great audio reports. It also has the carry handle installed.
