Overheating during a contest
This fall, I was participating in the WA QSO party (Salmon Run) on CW. The 2nd day, 4 hr before time was up, I was running (as opposed to search and pounce) on 15 and 10M. The 7000 was at full power, WinKeyer USB/N1MM, an end fed HW with SWR indicating less than 1.5. I was making a fair number of contacts when I saw my output drop and saw the temp icon showing in the red. I had been operating fast and furious since the morning - I would guess 10 hours. Ambient temps in the 70s.? No problem on day one but it was 50% CW and 50% SSB.? Since I've bought this rig in 2007, it has never had this overheating problem. I remember on this group (Yahoo group days) there was a lot of discussion about overheating 7000s but mine never did that - that is, until this contest. The next day, the rig operated just fine - nothing permanent happened.? Over the years, I've had this 7000 on two DXpeditions, many hours mobile, many hours portable with no problems. Has it become elderly and finicky about duty cycle? Like me?
?
My question is: Is there a slick way to ventilate an IC-7000 to slow the temperature rise?
?
My "nuclear option" is to sell it and buy a 100W amp for my IC-705. Sort of like selling a racehorse.?
?
Any suggestions would be appreciated.

开云体育My IC7000 has ran hot since new, and I never really worried about it. ( on most days all day). Then I read about a fan mod where a simple mod would allow fan to run continuously.I did the mod and it runs very cool now all day. Admittedly, I spend a lot of time receiving with very little transmitting each day. I believe the cooler running is probably better for the radio. There are a couple of different fan mods on the internet, so have a look at them and decide which is best for you. Hope this helps. 73 Neil ZL3ADC On 28 Dec 2024, at 12:15?PM, Larry Ryan via groups.io <llryan@...> wrote:

开云体育My 7000 has always tended to run hot but I built up a pair of 12v fans with a standalone bracket to maintain a decent supply of cooling air.?
Have always used this and have never had the driver issue in the finals even with a heavy duty cycle on FT8. Rig is only used as a driver for a 23cm transverter these days so only runs less than 2watts on two metres.?

I've always ran my IC-7000 with the separation kit mobile. Never had a problem with heating.

I attribute that to the main part of the radio was mounted in the spare tire wheel well belly. So the well is in the bottom of the trunk, under the car in the shade.?
?
Further I had the IC7000 connected to a AH-4 antenna tuner .. So my SWR was always 1:1.
?
I always ran SSB on HF and 95% FM on VHF-UHF. Operated a VHF contest once portable and? ARRL November sweepstakes SSB 2-3 times.
?
It was installed in my car, I bought new for 11-1/2 years till I traded it 3 months ago for a new Ford Maverick. . it had 152,600 miles on the odometer? and probably saw about 30 states in it's adventures as I was a senior field engineer (2nd-3rd level support)? for a global computer company.?

I added two really small fans to the back of the radio? glued to the rear heatsinks.
I added a pair of 4 pin tuner connectors, one for power from the radio and the other to a tuner. I also added an on-off switch and a pair of fused Anderson power poles for auxiliary low power.
I still have the setup in a drawer as I sold the IC-7000 a few years ago. |
开云体育This heat question has been batted around on this list for some time.? One side says that the ICOM engineers provided for proper heat distribution, others say that the rig needs additional ways of addressing the heat problem during extended use.? I personally think that it does. ? I really like this TO-3 idea.? What I did was place the IC-7000 in a go-box and placed a muffin fan behind it to blow air over the heat sink in the back. Cheap fix.? There must also be heat transfer as I am using the mounting bracket, and it is fastened to a metal shelf. ? Again, great idea on the TO-3’s! ? ‘73 de Jim N2ZZ ? I've added two TO-3 heat sinks to the left side of my IC 7000 to keep the DSP section much cooler. You could do the same on the right side to help keep the PAs cool. I had to file the TO-3 holes a little? to match the hole spacing on the rig. ? 73 de Bob KM4RL. |
I've never had a heat issue on my 2011 era IC-7000, but that's most likely because I do not do a lot of continuous duty/digital modes on it for any extended time periods. I also have it feeding an AH-4 tuner so it always sees close to a 1:1 SWR as well.
?
That said, I have always been concerned about it being a "hot" rig, that whenever operating I have always placed a 120mm PC case fan sitting on top blowing down on the heat sink and into the fan openings.? The fan is an ultra quiet model and powered by a separate USB cable plugged into my 100Ah LiFePO4 battery (I run off that battery when portable/parked and the truck battery when mobile) or to a USB port on the truck.? I've never seen my heat gauge above 30-40%, and it is rare that it ever leaves the cold end.

I performed the fan mod (added resistor) and it went from always
really hot to mostly cold.? It seemed to need little air to make
a significant difference.
?
I also mounted a set of the PortableZero side rails as I have them
on my?IC7300 and FT817.? That helps some as its more aluminum
to help dissipate heat.??

May have been mentioned, but what wattage for the 100 ohm resistor? ??????? Barb Stewart 3/28/1938 - 9/26/2024 sent from my Galaxy Tab A On Tue, Dec 31, 2024, 9:34 PM ajparent1/kb1gmx via <kb1gmx=[email protected]> wrote:
