RF Gain and the S-meter
3
Hi all, I am making myself some field-notes for the FT-817, referencing the existing cheat sheets and the manual. On page 20 of the operating manual: "If your transceiver is configured for "RF Gain" use, rotating this control fully clockwise in the SSB/CW/Digital modes will provide best sensitivity. To reduce the receiver's RF Gain somewhat, rotate this control counter-clockwise slightly. You will observe an increasing number of bars on the S-meter as you rotate the SQL/RF control counter-clockwise; this indicates increasing AGC voltage, which is causing the front-end gain to be reduced." I am presently confused, as I would expect the S-meter to be more active with the RF gain increased, but the way this is written (and in my experience), the S-meter decreases when the RF gain is increased. This also reduces the relevance of an RST based on reading the S-meter. Am I misreading things? 73

Go bag option ?
Picked up one of these which turned out to be very good quality. https://www.aliexpress.com/item/33006915461.html?pdp_npi=4%40dis%21GBP%21%EF%BF%A140.96%21%EF%BF%A117.61%21%21%2150.83%2121.86%21%40210384db17169104486316288e4ce9%2167103488115%21sh%21UK%212681419577%21&spm=a2g0o.store_pc_allItems_or_groupList.new_all_items_2007521708592.33006915461 Basically what Portable Zero sell as their 817 Sherpa II but without the Molle side bags. https://portablezerostore.ecwid.com/#!/817-Sherpa-II/p/57782043/category=21722042 The Portable Zero option with extra bags is probably a fair price but shipping cost ex US is prohibitive. Anderson power pole connectors

Hi all, I've noticed that there are "compatible" knock offs of authentic Anderson power pole connectors at lower prices. Anyone have any experience with them? Springs, contacts? Thanks. Joe N1KHB Sent from AOL on Android

Hello, I was not looking for this specifically, but just found that Aliexpress has TCXO boards for the FT-817. I have no idea if they are any good. I also have never had an issue with the stock oscillator. 0.5PPM Temperature Compensated Crystal Module Compensated Crystal Element for Yaesu FT-817 857 897 - AliExpress 73

Mech. Filters for FT-817/8

The Sotabeam ¡°Laserbeam digital audio filter fitted to the main board would appear to be a serious alternative, or at least worth considering. True or false?? P Burnett -- Peter Burnett G4BLL

Tokyo Hy-Power HF Lin Amp HL100B
7
Is anyone using this amp with an FT817/8? Is it possible to modify the drive input to obtain 100watts output for 5watts in. With the newer bdx version their is a switch to select 5 or 10 watts drive for 100watts out so I thought the b model might have the same circuitry but just no switch. Where can I obtain a copy of the manual and circuit diagram, pdf or paper. I have only been able to find details on the bdx version. Thanks for any comments/info -- Peter Burnett G4BLL

How to remove SEL knob and VFO knob on FT-817
5
Hello, I am replacing the SEL rotary encoder on the FT-817 and want to make sure I do it without breaking anything. What size allen key (hex wrench) do I use to undo the VFO knob? I tried using a 1.5 mm allen key but I can't loosen the screw. I don't want to apply undue force and damage something by using the wrong tool. How do I get the knob off the SEL encoder. Do I just pull it outwards while the unit is still fully assembled? Again, I tried pulling it off with some gentle force but it didn't budge. Since the encoder is being replaced anyway I'm OK with applying more force but I want to make sure that I'm approaching this the right way. Thanks Ed

technical standard certification number
14
Hello members I have the opportunity to visit Japan on a fairly frequent basis over the next few years and I am thinking of applying for a Japanese callsign. Most of the hurdles I think I can overcome. However in order to apply for said license I need to supply to the JARL, a technical standard certification number for my FT 817 nd A thorough search of the operator manual that came with the radio fails to mention any such number. If I cannot supply the number then I will incur a cost to have the radio tested and certified but being made in Japan, there should logically be a manufacturer's document in existence. Does anyone know the email contact details for Yaesu in Japan please? An email sent to their UK office has gone unanswered so far. Thanks in advance Denis VK6AKR

Solar panels

Hi all, I'm considering a solar panel purchase for portable qrp. Something in the neighborhood of 20-30 watts. Many on the web have sketchy, ambiguous, or contradictory specs. Any guidance would be appreciated. Tnx. Joe N1KHB

Loosening tight screws
15
I finally decided to attach the side rails that came with my Portable Zero Pack to my 817nd. The two screws on either side are so tight I can only barely loosen one of them. The other three are way to tight and I don't want to damage the Phillips head screw. Does anyone know of a method of loosening screws that are so tight? Appreciate any and all advice. 73 Rich KB3OMJ

DigiPi WSJT-X CAT PTT error
I'm using a DigiPi with a digirig going to the 817. Running WSJT-X. I have checked "CAT" for PTT Method. "Test CAT" works and comes back green, but then "Test PTT" produces an error (see attached screenshot). CAT control does generally appear to be otherwise working, as I can get it to change bands successfully, for example. Any ideas or suggestions? 73, Jim KX0U

H-250 Handset with FT-817 ??
2
All, Is anyone using an H-250 military handset with their FT-817 ? Perhaps in a field pack configuration ? If so, I have a bunch of questions; How did you interconnect the handset to the radio? In other words, did you buy a special cable, build or buy an adapter, or lob the U-229 connector off the end of the H-250 cable and add the '817 mic connector? Is the output level from the handset mic high enough to drive the radio ? Is there enough drive from the radio to drive the earpiece ? Thanks es 72, Gene K1NR

Add command to Direwolf.conf to force FT-817 into FM mode?
6
I wonder if anyone has ever come up with a command string for the Direwolf startup config file (direwolf.conf) that would put the FT-817 into FM mode for APRS? I recently beat my brains out trying to get the radio to work properly with APRS, not realizing I hadn't switched the radio to FM from DIG mode. It wasn't too obvious because I spent most of my time controlling a Raspberry Pi remotely with VNC. It was actually working, but not well. Dummy? Since I have Hamlib running and a CAT-62 cable it wouldn't seem impossible to send some sort of command (the "08" command string in the radio parlance). I know nothing about Python, but would be willing to learn. I suppose I could start FLrig first and somehow send a command to it as well, I haven't really thought this out yet, but I'll bet someone has. Any ideas? Dennis, K1YPP

8x1.2V Eneloops
10
Hi, Am enjoying goping through the many informative posts here. Quick question: I created an external power supply using an 8 X AA Tray and 8 1.2V eneloop NiMH batteries. Max power is 5W on FM and SSB with the tray plugged into the external DC input using the Yaseu power cable. I already had the charger and batteries so thought I would try this before looking to buy anything else. My roving sessions are usually only an hour or two at most. Are there any potential issues with this external power supply other than the relatively short life of the batteries - the supplied cable has a fuse. Am thinking of using the supplied rechargeable battery or a spare set of eneloops. cheers Tony

Digital mode on FT-817
5
I have been doing some testing with FLDIGI. I bought the unit used, and believe I have the 3 crystal filter set installed. When the node is digital mode it looks like there is a 500 Hz filter centered at 2000 Hz. Using ISB mode I still get 5 watts out, but it looks like there is 3000 bandwidth. Any sense of what is going on? Thanks!
