Collins mechanical filters installation guide for Yaesu FT-8xx radios - update 15May24

Hi folks,

I updated the document about the Collins mechanical filters for FT-8xx radios.?
More Collins p/n and used aliases on the market added to the document including the real pictures as a proof.

Hope it helps to someone,

Thank you for the updated docs. ?The problem now is that people are asking (and getting) very high prices for these Collins ?filters. ?The used ICOM filters are still very reasonably priced.

Get 'em while you can. The prices will continue to rise as the supply dwindles. And as any real CW op knows, in crowded band conditions a stock 817/818 is torture to operate.

Are Collins filters specific to each brand,/model of radio??

Joe,

They can vary between brand/model.? As in this subject line note the
Yaesu FT-8XX.

They are the same for 817, 818, 857, 897.? I think maybe 847 as well.?
Definitely not 891 (no filter).

A very key specification is the center frequency of the filter. In this
case: 455.00kHz center frequency.

Joe,

as Bryan said. They are specific by center frequency, in/out impedances, pinout and daughter board layout and finally size of the package.

Anyway, some radios share the same filters... even across different manufacturers.
Yaesu FT8xx uses as same filters as Yaesu FT-1000/1000MP, AOR 5000 or AOR 7030 or even TenTec Omni VII...
Each manufacturer and seller often re-labeled Collins filter with own code and Aliases but they are still same Collins...
These EMF filters are not as good as crystal filters, but they are still good performers in our radios. (even they are getting old and parameters are changing)

Thanks all for your response to my filter question. I should learn more about them. Maybe some enterprising soul will clone the Collins's units for the ham community.

I think the filter production process is non-trivial, and every year the market shrinks as the technology moves away from add-in filters.

To my knowledge there are no radios in current production that accept add-in filters, so the market is shrinking as old radios die.

Electronic replacements may be an option, but I feel the investment might never be recouped without charging non-ham friendly prices.

Ken,

the hybrid SDR radios like Elecraft K4 or Yaesu FTDX-xxx are still using filtered roofers (as there is no better way how to protect ADC from overloading) but they are using crystal filters.?

So you are right, that EMF units are dying slowly… :(
