Radio Shack switching 3 amp power supply

Curtis, Tony

Regarding switching power supply noise...

I have been using a small Radio Shack 13.8 VDC 3A regulated switching power
supply with my '817 with very limited hash problems, none where I have
wanted to operate. It is catalog number 22-503 at $49.99.

RS labels it "3-Amp Traveler Powers DC Vehicle Accessories Anywhere ...
great for powering auto accessories in countries with varying VAC."

It's black with a red lighted rocker-toggle on/off switch on the front
panel. It also has a vehicle accessory outlet (cigar lighter socket), a
6-foot power cord, and a padded carrying case. It takes 85 - 240 VAC input.
RS lists it as "UL listed and FCC approved." It measures 1-7/8 x 3 x 7-1/2
Inches and weighs 0.89 lbs.

On their web site < <>
go to PRODUCT CATALOG>Catalog Home>Test & Measurement>Power Supplies. RS
has a bunch of info about it under these headings: Features, Safety,
Connections, Operation, Care and Maintenance, Specification.

Using it, I position the power supply against the left side of the Z-11
which is underneath the '817.

Re: Press Waterman!!!!!!!

Pres Waterman

To bad John, I was hoping the supply Press was talking about was not a
swithching supply.
I did buy a CUP36-12-1 which is the one Universal radio sells and found
there was a LOT of RF hash
when using a whip antenna like the ATX. I did try several chokes and
nothing helped.
Universal said in their ad "we also added a surface mount capacitor right
inside the plug to reduce
RFI. " I dont see how that would help? If so I would do it in a second and
be done with this hunt for
THE supply.

My kingdom for a analog 2 amp wall wart!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The supply is NOT switching. Less than $20 at MCM.

Well regulated at multiple voltages including 12v

Hartley Alley/ Mid-America Bicycle Ham Radio Camping Trip

Very sorry to find out about the passing of Bicycle Mobile Hams of
America (BMHA) founder Hartley Alley, NA0A. When our paths crossed
around 1990 he was one of the few people that understood what most of
us bicycle hams had been trying to do and I'll say he did everything
he could to support my endeavors and write up articles (many of
them!) about my bicycle sation in the BMHA Newsletters. We had many
phone conversations back then and whenever I had finished talking to
him on the phone I felt like I had gone to a ham radio mobile pep
rally! I certainly miss him very much.

In my personal near future, I'll be leaving on a solo bicycle trip
early Saturday morning, June 9th,
2001 from my home QTH in Milwaukee, WI heading west and going through
Wisconsin, Minnesota, Iowa, Missouri, and Illinois. I'll be working
3.5
Mhz to 440 Mhz, 2.5 watts AM/FM/SSB/CW, using an FT-817, randomly,
throughout the trip. I should be on the road for about 16 days of
cycling and camping.

On 6m (my favorite band!) I'll be running 2.5 watts USB to a PRO-AM
fiberglass 6m whip. On 2m I'll be using a homebrew J-pole and on the
HF bands I'll be using my Hustler mobile whip with resonators.

Recent contacts on 6m from Wisconsin on the bicycle include N4HGZ in
Wilmington, NC just last week.

Here's a pretty simple WebTV webpage I have updated in the past week
or so
that has some photos, links, and info you might find useful:

I won't have too much time this week to respond to inquiries, but, I
will certainly try my best to answer all questions by the time I leave
Saturday morning.

I'm going to buy an ft-817 in the near future (probably about a week),
and am looking at different carrying arrangements. Saw a reference to
the Eagle Creek Protect-It Pouch, which looks pretty good, but Eagle
creek also makes several "padded cubes" as packing organizers. Seems
like you could put the rig plus accessories in one or more of these,
then stick that in a backpack, briefcase, luggage or whatever. Has
anyone tried this?

73,
Pete, NI9N

I've not used the Eagle Creek ones, but LL Bean has some padded
rectangular packing bags that I use and Campmor sells one that's
longer and narrower that I use to pack my PW-1.
They seem to work pretty well, although the gear needs to packed well
inside them, of course.

I'm trying to locate a "low-overhead" container for my Sony
Picturebook.

Windows CE and FT-817

Curtis, Tony

I use the Casio E-125 Cassiopeia Pocket PC every day and would love to have
software for interfacing that with the FT-817. I certainly would be willing
to meet a fair share price for the software. Or even better, for the
software and ready-made connecting cable!

Impedance "bump" Of An Elbow Connector

Kanalz, Karl

Elbows for "UHF" series connectors are not "constant impedance" (e.g., 50
ohms),
but then, neither are the connectors they attach to (the SO-239 and PL-258)!
They
are merely a convenience.

On the other hand, BNC connectors and their accessories (such as elbows)
were
originallyt designed to maintain a constant impedance through the
connector(s).

First, I hear bad things about impedences of elbows (yes, I know,
that can be true of any connector, but why add a *known* problem?).

Second, I don't like the mechanical stability with a (relatively)
long, heavy antenna such as the ATX. Especially as I will be
operating /PM backpacking w/20 to 30 kg, and sometimes I get a little
wobbly climbing over deadfall trees, boulders, etc. My dad had a
business repairing undergound coal-mining equipment & I learned to
over-engineer mechanical solutions from him.

Boots for 8 Pin Modular WAS: headsets for FT817

Has anyone tried a telephone headset for the rig? They are small and
light.

And in the same vein, does anyone know where right-angle boots for 8-pin
modular connectors can be obtained? I'd like to make an adapater that
lays alongside the radio.

I've used my old Heil BM-5 with the unit on VHF FM, and am told it
sounds fine. But even that's a bit large.

Rich,

I think the material on page 14 is in error regarding the SSB filter.
The only time the NAR works is when Menu 38 is in CW. If you have
the SSB filter in and set #38 to CW, NAR "works" but it not working
right and sounds strange.

If your hearing is OK (still hearing the lows and mid-range), then
you should be able to hear the difference with and without the SSB
filter. The SSB filter is really flat while the ceramic filter is
not even close. The "boosted" lows and highs are apparent when
listening to background noise. (I'm using boosted in relationship to
the ceramic filter.) With a good speaker (like the SP-8) hooked to
the 817, I find that the audio from many stations is more
understandable with the optional SSB filter. The filter also cuts
off the real lows (and highs) much better than the stock filter
resulting in less muddle in the audio. Again, I point out that this
filter is a refinement to the rig in contrast to the BIG improvement
resulting from adding the CW filter (makes CW useful with the 817).

Re: NorCal QRP BLT tuner

Glyph wrote:

Well, yes, but it comes with directions on how to mod it to feed
coax, which takes all of 3 short pieces of wire, a chassis-mount BNC
female (or your favorite coax connex), and an SPDT switch.

It's really just a good implementation of the classic Z-match ATU
(which, IIRC, is the same as the ZM-2 everyone raves about) It uses
low-power, easily available components; I believe the variable caps
are actually designed for use as trimmers. It includes a 50-ohm
absorptive bridge to ensure that you don't fry the finals in case of
a huge impedance mismatch. Also, there is an SWR "indicator" in the
form of an LED fed with a diode pointed in the reverse direction, if
you follow. When it goes out, you're at 1:1. It is "rated" by
NorCal for 5 watts but they say on the website they think it should
be good to 10.

I don't tune for low SWR; I tune for max power out (& trust the
protection circuit in the rig), so I didn't put the LED in. I also
didn't use the case that comes with it (a "roll-your-own" out of PC
board & a clear plastic top). I put it in a ****4"x2"x1"**** Radio
Shack plastic box I got for $2. Talk about tiny!

2 transformers to wind (one big for impedance transformation & one
small for the LED. Very easy to use. Flip the impedance switch
(selects output winding on the big toroid) to High, then tune the
caps. If you're not satisfied, flip to Low impedance, and try
again. I matched an 8-1/2 foot whip on my truck on 40M (and I think
80 also). External SWR meter then showed 1:1. WOW!

$29 incl. US shipping; don't know if they ship overseas. I believe I
already posted the URL; if not, start at www.norcalqrp.org and
navigate.

I bought my FT817 at Dayton and finally got it on the

(6/2). Today I went to install the 500hz IRC CW
filter which I also
bought at Dayton but it doesn't seem to be working.
Yes, I changed
menu item 38 to CW. Both the CW and OFF positions
sound the same.
When putting the filter menu into the SSB position it
sounds filtered
but it sounds like the CW is partially getting cut
off. On SSB the
signals are unintelligible with the filter set to ON
(SSB that is).
Again the SSB signals sounds the same with the filter
in the CW and
working but only
when menu item 38 is set to SSB, however, it doesn't
sound like any
500 hz CW filter I have ever heard.

I'll be calling IRC tomorrow and I am sure they will
either have any
answer or will ship a new one because they have
always given great
Hi Julio,

Yes. Menu 38 set to OFF means that you are using the stock ceramic
filter regardless if you have a CW or SSB optional filter installed.
If you have the CW filter installed and Menu 38 is set to CW, then
you use the stock filter except when mode is CW, CWR, or DIG and NAR
is ON.

Re: CW Filter / IRC 500 hz installation

I'm surprised that so many people find this confusing. Just like any other
transceiver, you have the option to turn your narrow filter on or off (use
it or not as conditions dictate). Installing a filter does not turn it on,
it just makes it available. Use of the, "nar", mode is described on page 14
under, "Front Panel Controls and Switches".

Re: CAT-Interface cable

Yup. Only I used 2 transistors, 2 resistors, a DB-9F, and a piece of
Cat5 network cable. I just stuck the appropriate wire into the
appropriate hole on the '817's ACC port. Fits (with lots!! of room
to spare) on a 1"x2" piece of perfboard. Someday, I will get around
to putting it in a box. I'm sure using surface mount components (or
maybe just neater construction technique!) you could fit it all in a
DB-9 hood.

I just bought a Macintosh "Mac to dataswitch" cable which is an 8-
wire straight through cable with 8-pin mini-DIN male connectors on
each end & am going to replace the Cat5 cable with 1/2 of this one.

work. If you are trying to format your memories for group recall,
the software fills in the remaining empty memories with the last
entry or the first entry in the new group. For example, in group 2
I have one freq stored 53.330. My next memory group starts at 41,
and I entered 146.76. All of the memories between 22 and 40 have
been filled in with 53.330! Next, I went into the editor,
and "deleted" and on the second attempt "cleared" and whatever I
could do to get rid of them and saved. Screen showed cleared, but
when I downloaded to radio they were still there! I saved all my
corrections, and guess what? When I rebooted the software and opened
my saved file, none of my changes (deletions and insertions) were
saved! I tried this a number of times. When I signed on, I didn't
know it was as a beta tester, but nevertheless, we're in it till it
right, so... next version please!"

I enjoy playing with the RATS software. It is a smooth running
intuitive piece of software which is advertised as Beta! However it
was FTBasic that got my memories the way I wanted them...

Neat if we could get all the features into one package... stupid me,
stupid me...

SSB Filter Selection - Performance

I am curious, did switching the NAR allow you to insert the SSB
filter?
Hi Don,

Jerry was installing the CW filter. NAR only works if the CW filter
is installed and CW is selected in Menu 38. (NAR also is used to
switch from wide to narrow FM deviation.)

If you install the SSB filter, the SSB filter is switched in and out
via Menu 38. NAR does nothing. I have both filters (but not in the
rig at the same time regrettably). The SSB filter is a 10-pole
Collins mechanical filter and is very nice. It is very flat over the
passband unlike the stock ceramic filter. Don't expect dramatic
changes like you observe with the CW filter. The SSB filter
effectively boosts the lows and highs (the stock filter rolls off the
highs and lows) and cuts off the very lows and highs that the stock
filter passes. To really appreciate the filter, I found that using
the SP-8 speaker makes a "big" difference. Although I have not had
time to get a audio review by the "178" group, initial reports are
that the audio is clearer, sounds some better, etc. Another result
of the flat passband it that the output is more constant in the PSK
mode as you move about the passband.

If there is interest, I can post more data about the SSB filter.
Perhaps you and I are the only two having this filter!

Subject: [FT817] Missing RX coverage on EU models

Hi All

I ordered my '817 a few weeks ago and I am still waiting like a kid on
Xmas eve...
When I asked the swedish dealer about possible delivery date, the answer
was
"we don't know..."... Sweden's priority seems to be between zero and nil
at Yaesu :~(

Anyway, I just realised that the european model of FT-817 does NOT cover
108-136MHz!? Too bad... I was really looking forward to listen to the air
band...
(It's legal to listen to any band here in Sweden.)

Perhaps it's only a "solder ball" issue? Has anyone compared the solder
ball
configuration of US/European/Japanese versions?

I'm not interested in extended TX coverage, I just want the air band RX.

QRP "more challenging" at sunspot minimum?

Near the bottom of the last cycle, I bought a couple transverters for 6M
and 2M as well as an old Kenwood TR-9500 UHF all-mode rig. It was fun to
work VHF/UHF during the minimum. About four years ago, I replaced all
that stuff with an FT-847. The FT-817 already has 6M, 2M and UHF and
since (most) vhf ops use an amp and big beams anyways... the 817 will work
just great!

By the way... maybe QRP DXing is more difficult during the sunspot
minimum, but as we say on the QRP-L reflector, '40's always open.' 40
meters, that is.

Everyone have a great week. I finally got my dipole back up yesterday
after having the roof replaced and I'm having a blast with the 817.
