FT-817ND power takes time to reach 5 Watts after powering on
3
Hello, My FT-817ND (bought new in 2004) takes some time to reach 5 Watts after first powering on. Example: apply 12V external supply, power on rig, key down on 28.060 MHz CW. Power is initially about 3.5-4 Watts, and current draw is about 1.6-1.7 Amps. Keep keying down. Current draw drifts up and power output drifts up. After about 5-10 seconds, the rig reaches 5 Watts output at 2 Amps. Thereafter, the rig puts out 5 Watts as long as the rig is kept powered on. I observe this more pronounced on a few bands, e.g. 30m and 10m. If I give the rig 13.8V, the time to reach the 5 Watts output after power-on is shorter. If I turn the rig on, leave it on in receive mode for a several minutes, and then key down on 28.060 CW, I get the 5 Watts at 2 Amps immediately. Is this normal behavior for this rig, or is it a sign that something is aging and should be replaced? 73 Mike N9OHW

FT-818 Odd SWR Readings on 70 cm
10
My FT-818 shows 3 bars on the SWR meter on 70 cm at the 5 W setting, when connected to a good quality UHF/microwave dummy load. On 50 or 144 MHz it shows zero bars. This is true for both front and rear antenna connectors. The output power is indeed 5 watts, measured on a Coaxial Dynamics meter. I have tried a couple of good dummy loads. Can anyone comment as to whether this is normal behaviour? A local says his FT-817 shows zero bars on 432 MHz on a good load......so is there a change from the FT-817, or is there something amiss in my '818? 73, Steve VE3SMA

Iambic mode - A or B?
6
As a long-term straight key operator trying to get to grips with iambic keying I would like to know whether the 817's internal keyer is mode A or mode B. Whichever it is, there isn't a choice, and I'm convinced that I would find the other mode easier! Any advice, please? 73, John G4EDX-- John Fletcher

Windcamp Battery
13
I recently ordered a Wind Camp Battery plate. Seems the battery I have is too large for the plate. Dumb question, is the Wind Camp Battery that much small than the battery I have? I assume so? -- Thanks Dave NU4N dwtucker19@...

Power bank questions
33
I was wondering if it is possible to have a power bank to charge my phone (while hiking) and also to have it as a backup power source for the Yaesu. Not only voltage and current ratings on websites like Amazon are confusing (and probably wrong), but I'm also insecure if a USB-C to DC cable would handle the ~2.6 A current the Yaesu uses to TX (I use a lot of FT8). Is it possible to have a power bank to meet my needs? What kind of criteria should I look for? Daniel PY2TDB.

I cannot turn off repeater shift mode on ten meters while in usb mode
13
Hi guys: I have a question about my ft817. Yesterday, I was on 28336 on ten meter usb mode. When I attempted to answer a buddy, and I key up the mic, The frequency would shift upwards to transmit on 283445. I looked up the menus to see if repeater shift was on, and I got the following: Menu Item 42 [RPT SHIFT] Function: Set the magnitude of the Repeater Shift. Available Values: 0 ~ 99.99 MHz Default: Depends on transceiver version, and the band in use. Each band’s repeater shift (HF/50/144/430 MHz) may be set independently. The thing is, when I enter menu 42 and turn the tuning knob to the left to try to get it to 0, then hit hold the function button to get out of the menu, The voice box I have reports nothing. Has anyone else ever encountered this problem? Please advise as you like. Mike M. Mike mcglashon AD9CA Email: Michael.mcglashon@... Ph: 618 783 9331

Advice on selling
10
I plan to sell my FT-817ND in the near future as I'm not using it enough to justify keeping it. It has all the original accessories including the YF-122C and YF-122S Collins mechanical filters. I can't decide whether to include the filters in the sale or sell them separately. Any advice please? -- Mike G8GYW

Sotabeams speech compressor
7
Now that better weather is hopefully not too far away I have put together a grab bag of kit for portable working. I have a Ft817nd and a ft818 for /p use, the 817, z817 plus a couple of wire antennas and patch leads all fit in a padded dog treat pouch, ideal. However it can be difficult getting contacts especially if a couple of stations call at the same time as you. I also have a sotabeams inline speech compressor, first time I used it was an eye opener. Usually I have to repeat my callsign as the other stations miss a letter or two and ask for a repeat, sometimes more than once if my signal is low. With the speech compressor though I had no repeats asked for last week, 5w from a linked dipole in inverted V in back garden worked all over EU and into Russia. I was heard first call and received good audio reports, switching the compressor off and there is a definite drop in signal. This was with the compressor in as delivered configuration, this weekend I will use another rig to monitor my audio and adjust mic gain on 817 plus P2 on the compressor board to set it to my voice. Really good addition to my portable setup along with my K1EL K16 keyer. Andy

Witch DSP Filter is Better? BHI or Sotabeams?
7
Hi guys, I would like to install a DSP filter, who can tell me where the advantages and disadvantages are between the sotabeams filter LASERBEAM-817(FTFM-100) and the BHI filter NEDSP1901-KBD. Is it possible to operate the sotabeams filter from the outside, whereas the BHI filter requires two holes to be drilled. Vy 73 de Martin HB3YDM

CAT Display with an CAT Splitter for FT-817ND and others?
7
Hi guys, how does it work? I am looking for a way to add a CAT display? My question: Is it possible to add the AT display with a Y-cable? I have an Ft817ND and an LDT Z-817 tuner in use, and would like to use the original CAT display from the Cris from Australia and not a copy. Vy 73 de Martin HB3YDM

Bioenno 9A battery BOGO deal
2
Hello all, I came across a deal that folks here would likely be interested in, so I'm sharing it here - I have no relation to the seller, just a happy customer. Bioenno is having a BOGO (Buy One Get One) offer on 9 Amp 12 volt LiFePO4 batteries - and as a friend on another group proved [0] these are very nice battery packs. Im pretty sure the deal is only good in the U.S. (sorry), but I encourage you to look into it, it's a great deal, esp if you goo in with a friend and split a pair of batteries. I ordered a pair of these batteries, each with its own 2 amp charger for $115 with $10 s/h, so final cost was $62.50 for a quality 9 amp batter and a nice charger. Here is the link to the deal in their website: https://www.bioennopower.com/products/12v-9ah-lifepo4-battery-pvc Hope some here find this useful, Ken, N2VIP [0] https://www.nk7z.net/are-bioenno-batteries-ratings-correct/

Yaesu XF-122 C, 500 Hz Collins Mechanical,Filter FS
Yaesu XF-122 C, 500 Hz Collins Mechanical Filter For Sale: I have a Yaesu XF-122 C, 500 Hz Collins Mechanical Filter For Sale. It is sometimes called a YF-122 C. It also has the 528-8686-030 Collins number on it. It is for a 455 KHz IF. My understanding is that it fits YAESU FT-817/ 857/897/818, and maybe others. It includes the PC board with connectors. This one works 100% as it should. It also looks like new, as if that matters for a filter inside a rig. Buy it for $250, plus shipping from Florida.
