FT-817 Accessories
Hi FT-817 user?s!
The FT-817 is a very excellent piece of equipment. But for optimized CW use, some improvements or accessories are necessary. Here some of my thought?s and a description of my solution?s. Tthe FT-817 needs: -a memory keyer for auto-CQ (importand for QRP!) and with easy adjustment of the sending speed -an extern tunebutton which is also useful as a straight CW-key (integrated backup key!) -DC-distribution with RFI-choke, Spikesurpression, Autofuse and Reversepolarityprotection to directly connect the FT-817 and the Z-11 Autotuner I did built this in a small accessoriebox from scratch, matching the leftside of the Trcvr. The powersupply and the keyer cable using right angle plugs, so if you are using the frontside antenna connector, the FT-817 can stand upside on his back. My minimum FT-817 setup is completely transportable in a small Samsonite phone bag (around 23x17x8cm). This bag contains (nothing outside the bag!): -FT-817 with NiMh-Batterie -small centerloadet CB Antenna -Mike -Palm Paddle -OE6GC Ultimate CW-Accessorie-box (described above) -Homebrew ZM-2 tuner -Koax between FT-817 and ZM-2 -10m + 10m of flexible Antenna-wire (=20m n x lamda/2 or tuned dipole on 40 to 10m ) -Toshiba (15V/1,5A DC) silent Switching Powersupply Would be fine if this thought?s are useful for the FT-817 freak?s too. Will load up Foto?s to the file section soon. 73, Harry (OE6GC) |

According to my Z-11 Manual, the power connector is a 5.5 X 2.5 mm coaxial connector. I got mine at Radio Shack, but don't have access to the RS part number. Hope this helps, 72, Bill W4RK ----- Original Message -----

suspect that Yaesu is finally catching up with current state of the art, albeit about 10 years slow. In most applications, it's more expensive to provide the 5V interface than a RS-232C compliant one. Of course current state-of-art uses USB instead of RS-232C. There are quite a few computers that don't have the "legacy" serial or parallel ports any more. It would be nice if the radio manufacturers would get together and create a common programming language utilizing USB. Ed WA4YIH -----Original Message-----

Re: Voltage vs. Power out
Check out K6XX's 817 pages. There's a graph, in pdf format.
73, Doug From: krandino@... Date: Sun, 03 Jun 2001 18:31:05 -0000 Sorry if this is in the faq. I looked and didn't see it. Has anyone checked voltage out versus power out? At what voltage does the power start to drop off? The reason I ask is I am thinking of bundling a group of 4 or 5 of the radio shack 9.6V 1600 maH battery packs together in parallel to make a field battery pack. But my latest experience with them makes me wonder if I would be better off with a 12V battery. The power out (based upon signal reports) seemed to drop off rather quickly while using the battery packs. Re: Voltage vs. Power out
Hi Keith,
Beware putting battery packs in parallel! Not a good idea. Let me offer you a thought that I have put into practice. I put onto the power cord to the FT-817 the mating Molex connector to the one that the RS battery has on it. I cut the power cord to about 9" to reduce the voltage drop over the cord. I also put the same Molex connector that is on the battery pack on the output of my AC power supply. You may now use a cable clamp mounted on the groud post to keep any strain off of the power jack/plug. When I want to work using the AC supply, I just plug it into the Molex connector. If the internal battery dissipates, then I just plug in a RS pack into the external Molex connector (but just a single pack). I keep the internal battery pack and two extras in my travel kit. Hope that made sense. :-) 72 de Barry - W4WB --- In FT817@y..., krandino@s... wrote: Sorry if this is in the faq. I looked and didn't see it. Has anyonepower start to drop off?
