Re: Radio Shack switching 3 amp power supply

How is it possible that power supplies of the same model and brand can produce
severe noise while others do not? It turns buying a switching Power supply for
the FT-817 into a crap shoot

Jim,

The Palm compatible devices only run the Palm OS and the Windows CE
devices only run the Windows CE OS.

As far as your interoperability question, I suspect that to send the
message to you municipality, you will need a POP3/IMAP4 complaint mail
program such as Outlook, Outlook Express, Eudora, or one of the many
others. Programs that support RF based message transfer normally do not
support corporate messaging standards.

Howdy! Looking for NYC info....

Hi Pres!

I am going to be in NYC next Sunday PM & at least part of Monday
(vacation). I'm wondering if you can point me at a good (i.e.,
INEXPENSIVE hi hi) electronics store in the area -- I *had* a digital
camera, but the ex got it :( I know, Long Island ain't NYC but I
figure you're close enough! Also maybe a ham store? Our little
local (Universal Radio) shop's range of products in stock to play
with is, well, uninspiring. ONE 706 & ONE Japan Radio is the extent
of the HF rigs they have on display.

Heading on up to Maine for lobster & birdwatching (& portable ops
w/'817 & a dipole, a'course!) afterwards.

Thanks, see ya.

Greetings to all:

In as much as I do not take these polls too seriously, I would rather
see a discussion on what are the pros and cons of each system.

For example, I just recently acquired a Palm IIIe. I presume that it
can run either Palm OS or Windows CE or both. What are the
advantages of one over the other? If I am in an emergency situation,
and I have downloaded an e-mail from a pactor board from an HF
terminal, what is the best software for transferring that message
onto a LAN that is being operated by the municipality that I am
working with? Can I use my YAPP? my PKPakRATT? WF1B software? Log
Windows? Writelog?

It is very difficult to make an informed decision when one is
ignorant of the factors, and this sort of poll is not helpful.

What do the experts say?

For that matter, this discussion (and poll) is probably inappropriate
for this group. A better forum, IMHO, is in the digital group. But
then again, let's not get too dogmatic about these things...

Curtis, Tony

Bill,

I used my in-the-room wire antenna for 40-20-15-10 meter CW during the
recent WPX CW contest with no problems.

The '817 and Z-11 are indoors. The coax is from the back of the '817 to the
Z-11 beneath it. There is a shortened wire "dipole", with no coax, out of
the back of the Z-11. The wire is laying on the floor, in two directions
from the gear, bent around corners, all in one small room.

Fred,

I'm beginning to think what you suggest is correct. Some people seem to have
different results. I have no complaints with my power supply. I also run a
VR-5000 beside the '817 setup and it hasn't been bothered much by the RS
power supply when the '817 is on. The '5000 uses its own wallwart.

Are there any Windows CE machines that will run a decent PSK31 program?
(Last I looked, there weren't any, but I might have missed something.) If I
could run PSK31 on a "palmtop," I would be interested in going that way.

If not, maybe the Palm interface might be interesting. It is very portable,
but I find the screen too small for practical use of spreadsheet/database
applications. So, I would probably continue to use a PC...and I would
probably not be interested in an application that didn't allow me the option
of using a desktop or laptop PC.

Re: New poll for FT817

The Poll is appropriate; it is dealing with the memory management of
the FT-817. It has a direct impact on the development of the software
needed for memory management. The developer would like to know which
platform is the most popular. Why write software for a platform that
no one uses. The Palm OS is more then likely the one of choice with a
laptop second. The Palm gets good battery life. BTW your Palm IIIe
will not run WinCE.

Your question about transferring a message is a can of worms. It is
some what system dependent. It could be as simple as a forward of
the message or cut and paste, or you may have to use sneaker net to
get the information to the appropriate officials.

Your points are all well taken and are questions that should be
discussed and answered.

Thanks Jim N5TJZ

Re: New poll for FT817
