Bill,
I used my in-the-room wire antenna for 40-20-15-10 meter CW during the
recent WPX CW contest with no problems.
The '817 and Z-11 are indoors. The coax is from the back of the '817 to the
Z-11 beneath it. There is a shortened wire "dipole", with no coax, out of
the back of the Z-11. The wire is laying on the floor, in two directions
from the gear, bent around corners, all in one small room.

The trick is try to it with a front panel HF whip on 20 in the SSB or CW
mode.
That tells ALL. Its like a woman with out her make-up!
