Subject: [FT817] Best retail pricing for the FT817 outside of hamfests?

All,

I've been following this forum for quite some time and am now in the
"pre-purchase phase" for the FT817. If any of you are from the Wisconsin
area (or Chicago, for that matter) are there any good swaps coming up where
one can get a good price (such as what was seen at Dayton) on the FT817?
Barring that, is there a good, reputable retailer who has a price that'll
beat AES in-store of $770?

I'd also be interested in a private purchase, but I've heard that the
warranty is quite restrictive; only the initial purchaser can get any work
done under warranty (and in a retail purchase, one needs to give their name
and callsign to complete the purchase). Yes? Or would the reliability of the
radios be such that I need not worry about this?

Also-having not been a active ham for over 15 years, and having followed the
comments here, I'l like to know more about the whip antennas that have been
bandied about here. I'm hoping to use a whip as a pedestrian mobile, but for
"hom" use I'm just going to stick with simple dipoles for
12M/15M/17M/20M/40M until I can get a good HF vertical.

Comments and help appreciated!!!

Thanks for all the help!
