Yep.? You'd be amazed (if that's the right word) at how bad a
modified sine wave inverter is.? I had a XPower 1kw unit in my
initial semi-off-grid solar system (only because it had been given
to me earlier), and tried it out.? I figured there'd be birdies
sprinkled around.? Not exactly.? Instead I found the entire HF
spectrum - ALL. OF. IT. - was wiped out.? Replaced the XPower with a
500va pure sine wave inverter from Victron, and all has been well.
Some images of the A/C waveforms, attached.? I notice that the
Victron's pure sine wave did distort a bit when loaded down with a
number of switching power supplies (wall warts, etc) that had a bad
power factor, but it didn't seem to be bad enough to affect RF
reception.? Resistive loads had no effect on the waveform.
Enjoy,

wave inverter. Has anyone here ever looked?

Hi Ron,
My caution is to not confuse watts with watt-hours.?
Getting a 300w unit only tells you the maximum
instantaneous AC power that the unit will deliver, but
provides no information on how long that delivery can be
maintained.? So saying "A 300W unit can last a long
time" does not make sense.? Watts has no concept
of time; it's watt-hours that matters.
There can be a rough correlation between the higher
power (higher watts) with larger batteries (more
watt-hours), but that's only cursory.? When choosing a
unit, one needs to understand both the maximum output
needed (watts), and total capacity (watt-hours).?
Marketing-savvy manufacturers may couple a large cheap
(modified sine wave) inverter with the smaller battery,
preying on this confusion, with the ad copy focusing on
the former and ignoring the later.? The general public
often doesn't think about the difference, and because of
the lower cost may get a unit that won't meet their
needs.
Interestingly, you will very often find units that offer
88 watt-hours of total capacity or slightly less; I
believe that's the maximum for some international
shipping and airline travel reasons.

"I have some good 6000 AHr units that put out 12V and USB (12000 AHr for USB), but have 3 Amp output limits."
You may want to check your units, LOL - got a good laugh reading about 12,000 Amp Hour batteries...
?
Ken, N2VIP

Greg,
I agree we must always look at the AHr rating of the battery when getting one of these units, nothing new.? Even for 12V batteries for our rigs we need to check these ratings.? But the internal battery is also a factor for the 12V and USB and other output units, not just the 120VAC output versions.? And there are a lot of units for 12V and USB and others for just single voltages.
With these one must also check the max current rating.? I have some good 6000 AHr units that put out 12V and USB (12000 AHr for USB), but have 3 Amp output limits.
But there are many applications where even a 100W unit will do as one wants.? An 8AHr battery is good for about any POTA event where like 5 hours use.

power, all in one battery box.? I have 2 with 120VAC output
along with USB and 12VDC outlets.? They come in a verity of
power levels, mine are 100 & 300W.
There are other that can
power a FT817 for hours that put out USB and 12VDC.
Here is one on Amazon.? No
tsure if you need 120 or 240VAC.

Martin,
Yes there a lots of power banks that put out USB power and 12VDC power and also 120VAC power, all in one battery box.? I have 2 with 120VAC output along with USB and 12VDC outlets.? They come in a verity of power levels, mine are 100 & 300W.

Two ordinary 5 volt power banks of sufficient ah ratings wired in series creates 10 volts which is about the ideal voltage for the radio.

If I understand the OP's desire, he wants a power bank that outputs proper voltages for both their cellphone and their FT-817.
?
TalentCell has some interesting power banks, like this:

?
But this particular model lacks a high-current/high-voltage USB-C PD port...
?
Personally I'd prefer something like this:
?
- A Bioenno 9 Amp LiFePO4 battery & charger (still on BOGO at $115 plus shipping for TWO batteries and TWO chargers)
?
- This PowerWerx USB-C QC adapter: $30
?
- A powerpole panel mount to power the FT-817
?
- A small Harbor Freight case, like this:
?
Yes, that takes you to $200, but if you can find a friend to split the BOGO deal on the battery, you're now under $150 for a great, robust power solution.
?
Hope this helps,

What modes you use? Does the power bank or the cable heat up?
