Re: I cannot turn off repeater shift mode on ten meters while in usb mode
Hi Mike, ? That doesn’t sound like a repeater shift problem as repeater shift is only operational on FM. ? The shift is only 8.5 kHz so it may, in fact be that the radio is in split mode. Try changing your receive frequency to, say 28.340 and then see what the transmit frequency does when you transmit. ? Also, see if you get the same sort of result on other bands. ? I have an FT857 which has a fault (which I haven’t yet fully diagnosed) whereby it transmits 13 kHz away from the receive frequency. This occurs on all bands and modes. ? Let us know the results of those tests and we can try to diagnose further. ? ?

Hi guys: I have a question about my ft817. Yesterday, I was on 28336 on ten meter usb mode. When I attempted to answer a buddy, and I key up the mic, The frequency would shift upwards to transmit on 283445. I looked up the menus to see if repeater shift was on, and I got the following: ? Menu Item 42 [RPT SHIFT] Function: Set the magnitude of the Repeater Shift. Available Values: 0 ~ 99.99 MHz Default: Depends on transceiver version, and the band in use. Each band’s repeater shift (HF/50/144/430 MHz) may be set independently. ? The thing is, when I enter menu 42 and turn the tuning knob to the left to try to get it to 0, then hit hold the function button to get out of the menu, The voice box I have reports nothing. Has anyone else ever encountered this problem? ? Please advise as you like. ? Mike M. ? Mike mcglashon AD9CA Email: Michael.mcglashon@... Ph: 618 783 9331 ?

Hi Andy
when you switch to FM can you then turn off the RPT button ?

If you press the f key briefly then look for rpt, button a in row 4, I believe that you can turn the repeater function off, not near my 817 at present to? check.

Hi Mike I’m interest in the SSB Filter YS122S.

For a CW filter one can get as much as $200, about half what one can get for a used FT817.? But having the filter in the rig will make it sell quicker and for more.
I have the Collins 500 Hz filter in my FT817.? I do need to sell it for dont use, I have the IC705 and X6100.? But I have always liked my FT817, very good QRP rig.

I've got an FT-897 in a similar situation (full of filters, sitting idle), and my opinion is that while the filters have value outside the radio, and by selling them separately you may maximize your profit, but once the filters sell, you will possibly (probably?) have a hard time selling the FT-817nd w/o filters, as the potential buyer will most likely want the filters.
?
In other words, as a package the radio/filters may sell faster, but at a discount to selling them individually, which will likely take longer.
?
Good luck,

Yep.? You'd be amazed (if that's the right word) at how bad a
modified sine wave inverter is.? I had a XPower 1kw unit in my
initial semi-off-grid solar system (only because it had been given
to me earlier), and tried it out.? I figured there'd be birdies
sprinkled around.? Not exactly.? Instead I found the entire HF
spectrum - ALL. OF. IT. - was wiped out.? Replaced the XPower with a
500va pure sine wave inverter from Victron, and all has been well.
Some images of the A/C waveforms, attached.? I notice that the
Victron's pure sine wave did distort a bit when loaded down with a
number of switching power supplies (wall warts, etc) that had a bad
power factor, but it didn't seem to be bad enough to affect RF
reception.? Resistive loads had no effect on the waveform.
Enjoy,

Hi Ron,
My caution is to not confuse watts with watt-hours.?
Getting a 300w unit only tells you the maximum
instantaneous AC power that the unit will deliver, but
provides no information on how long that delivery can be
maintained.? So saying "A 300W unit can last a long
time" does not make sense.? Watts has no concept
of time; it's watt-hours that matters.
There can be a rough correlation between the higher
power (higher watts) with larger batteries (more
watt-hours), but that's only cursory.? When choosing a
unit, one needs to understand both the maximum output
needed (watts), and total capacity (watt-hours).?
Marketing-savvy manufacturers may couple a large cheap
(modified sine wave) inverter with the smaller battery,
preying on this confusion, with the ad copy focusing on
the former and ignoring the later.? The general public
often doesn't think about the difference, and because of
the lower cost may get a unit that won't meet their
needs.
Interestingly, you will very often find units that offer
88 watt-hours of total capacity or slightly less; I
believe that's the maximum for some international
shipping and airline travel reasons.

Greg,
I agree we must always look at the AHr rating of the battery when getting one of these units, nothing new.? Even for 12V batteries for our rigs we need to check these ratings.? But the internal battery is also a factor for the 12V and USB and other output units, not just the 120VAC output versions.? And there are a lot of units for 12V and USB and others for just single voltages.
With these one must also check the max current rating.? I have some good 6000 AHr units that put out 12V and USB (12000 AHr for USB), but have 3 Amp output limits.
But there are many applications where even a 100W unit will do as one wants.? An 8AHr battery is good for about any POTA event where like 5 hours use.
