There is a tiny screw that secures the plastic ignition switch in place, although mine is a Phillips head. If it were that, the switch would come off when you pulled it toward the firewall.

What error codes have you got when this limp mode happens ? I had limp mode once with my ‘97EVC...The codes I got on my ScanGuage were all related to solenoids on the valve body....To cure the problem, we cleaned all the pins on different modules, like ABS (Yes, can be related to other modules !!), also the pins on the big plug behind the tranny, and especially inspected the solenoids on the valve body and found the culprit....In fact, one of them was loose in its socket.....So we reinserted it correctly and my mechanic twisted something on it so it cannot come out.....We reprogrammed the TCU and throttle body and that was it !!!.....no more problems with the transmission since then !!! Good luck...

Re: auxillary automatic transmission cooler

Greetings all,

99 EV-based Winnebago Rialta owner here.? It is over 7000 lbs dry so it taxes the transmission even on flat roads.? The T4 Eurovan stock cooler runs transmission fluid through pipes in a bath of engine coolant, once the engine is warmed up (nominally 190F) the transmission fluid can never be cooler than the engine coolant, at best. According to German Transaxle of Bend, OR, over 90% of the EV transmissions they rebuild every year failed due to overheating.? In fact, German Transaxle installs an external cooler on every rebuild and their 4-year/48,000 mile warranty is only valid with this cooler installed and fluid changed every 20,000 miles.

When we first bought the Rialta three years ago, the transmission temps would get up well over 200F and stay there, especially in hilly terrain or stop-and-go traffic... I even saw something like 275F briefly during a longish climb in the Ozarks.?

Based on recommendations from other Rialta owners, ? I installed a True-cool external transmission fluid cooler with a Thermostasis bypass (sort of like a thermostat but doesn't close completely) in place of the stock VW? fluid-to-fluid cooler.? In the 8000 miles since installing the external cooler and bypass, the normal operating temp is 159-164F and the highest I have seen is 195F when in a slow-moving traffic jam.

The cost of this mod depends a bit on how far you go.? See prices below.

1.? The cooler kit is $179 including shipping from Macko Transmissions here:

2. The bypass, which even people in Florida have found necessary, adds another $42.95 ($124.95 for the Thermostasis unit).

3.? Three liters of ATF (~$16.95 ea for OEM) are required due to increased system capacity. ? However, I chose to replace as much fluid as I could drain out (about 8 liters) which totaled $135.? Some Rialta owners have claimed good success with Valvoline Maxlife ATF which meet's VW's spec, is widely available, and is a lot less expensive at about $25 per gallon.

4.? ATF pan gasket and filter kit at $24.95.

For me, I also consider the cost of the Scan Gauge II ($115), the transmission dipstick and tube ($25), and Fluid Rx spot test kit ($34.95) to be part of the mod so my total investment is $638.85.

There a lot of good info (including cooler installation video) and many other things Eurovan here:

Re: auxillary automatic transmission cooler

My wife and I?had the GoWesty ATF cooler installed in our 2002 EVC by a reputable?local garage (Stephan's Autohaus).? We are the second owners of our EVC and installed the cooler at 70K miles.? Works great, no issues so far.? Our motivations were that?most of the places we want to visit?require?driving through mountain ranges?and because our local area of CA (Sacramento) gets hot during the summertime (daily temps of 90-100 degrees).?

Just peace of mind in our case.

Re: Chronic Limp Mode - 97 EVC

Updating the thread:

I pulled both the TCU and ECU out of the van and brought them to work (hi-tech device engineering co). I asked one of our electrical engineers to inspect the printed circuit boards.? They found nothing wrong, all the solder joints were good, no voids, cracks, corrosion.? I did get a bit more aggressive in cleaning the pins.? After re-install, I was still in limp mode.

I decided to take the van on a trip anyway, shifting manually and going slow on the highway.? As I mentioned previously, it will often fix itself randomly along the road.? 1 hour into the drive, that's exactly what happened - into overdrive she goes - Life is Great!? Except I have no idea why it keeps doing this, and I'm certain it will fail again before long.

Once again, the instrument panel went haywire briefly, immediately before the tranny came out of limp mode.? I should mention that when this epilepsy occurs, my digital clock resets to 1PM and the trip odometer clears itself back to 0.0.? Strange...

I'll keep trying to find the problem and will update again.? Thanks.

I have a weekender and I think a real trans cooler is absolutely required if you're driving in mountains or stop and go traffic.
With the stock "cooler" the trans fluid temp would go over 250 just driving up the mountain to my house.? Trans fluid degrades quickly at those temperatures.? A EV winnebago weighs what, 6500 lbs?? Vs the 4500 of the Weekender. ? You need to do everything you can to help out that poor transmisison.

In Boise you should use a bypass.? I should probably put one in my van as the trans temp often stabilizes at 145 which is a little low.? I'f prefer 160.

The cooler is not that difficult to install unless you have large hands.?? There's an excellent set of videos on youtube.

Re: Disposal of 93 Weekender

Ah I see. I was wracking my brain trying to figure out which parts are in matching sets and other than internal eng and trans parts I couldn't think of any. And I didn't read that it was a poptop, though weekender yes.

In my opinion with the level of rust that this rig apparently has, and provided it is sans poptop, it really isn't worth much as a rolling shell. As a rolling unit w/eng & trans I think it would take a special person to buy it for $500. Certainly the sum of the parts are worth more individually, but like Cole said pulling them takes real work and time. At the junkyard maybe you'd get $75-150 depending on scrap prices at the moment.

?? HI DP - just a quick note---
?There is a standard Xmission cooler immediately behind the housing,
but some owners have chosen to upgrade (towing loads) or just by choice.
I looked into this, they arent terribly expensive, but Im doin OK with stock.

Re: auxillary automatic transmission cooler

Members of the Rialta group have reported that the aux?trans cooler would effectively reduce AFT fluid temperature from?above 230F to around 180F and not more than 190F?in the hot summer days.? However, when driving in the cold region during the winter months, it would take too long for the fluid temperature to reach 150F which is a little too low for the trans to operate efficiently.? They have to either put a piece of cardboard in front of the?radiator to partly block the cold air, or install a by pass valve to?by pass?the aux cooler unless the ATF fluid temperature reach 180F or above.? In Southern areas, the by pass valve is not required.? Long

Thanks, Bob - you are correct about the cigarette lighter plug being powered w/o the key : I had forgotten this was the case. I realized that I had purchased a replacement switch years ago, so I followed the instructions in the files area and was able to swap it out in about an hour's time. With luck this will fix the problems I was seeing.

Well for one easy example. To do a poptop conversion you need ALL the interior trim from the bottom of the windows up.

You also need all of the structural and mechanical components as a set to make the top work.

If even a single piece is missing you can't convert another good van into a weekender.?

Which makes all the other bits basically worthless. Because finding those pieces ?available individually later is a 1/million shot.

A manual transmission swap is the same deal. Useful as a complete package, but almost unusable if key pieces have already been taken.

The table panel and its steel support structure, the seats and their armrests, all stuff that needs all its parts to be useful in another van.?

I hate it when someone takes an armrest off a perfectly good seat. Leaving the seat as basically junk.?

There are cheap new parts to restore a broken armrest.?

Put that van in a pull it yourself junk yard and you have guys destroying good door panels just to get a window switch out.?

I've seen good doors and hatches used as "sleds" to drag an engine to the cash register at pick and pulls.

Steering wheels are often cut open to access the retaining nut because it's faster than figuring out how to get the cover off.

All the electronics are often left exposed to the rain and snow.

There is a proper way to salvage the parts off these vans so that other vans may live. Pick-n-pull lots are not the proper way.

Re: Disposal of 93 Weekender

As a reference, or if anyone is interested:
There are 2 1999 VW Eurovans listed on craigslist in my area (San Diego, CA) for around $2,000. One salvage (fender bender), and one a busted head gasket with a clean title. The clean title one is a Weekender, but I don't know how much is compatible with my 2003 or I might go investigate.

Parts I could use from a Eurovan:
passenger door handle mechanism
driver's side door wiring
overhead dome lights
westfalia decorative light cover

I suspect that if I tried to buy all the parts separately I might get up towards 2K in costs.?But I'm happy to just leave my van the way it is.
